I'm going a little off-topic here, but just wanted to say that it reminds me of another similar riddle, which runs along the same lines. (covered for spoilery, because it may drop hints)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
A plane crashed in the jungle. Where did they bury the survivors?

hm, the answer... spoilered of course.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
They don't .. they are the survivors Razz
.. I love that riddle. .. Is it bad that I think of Lost now when I read that though?

To the aboves: the top 10, although it doesn't matter as such, it is nice to "see your name in lights" so to speak, so people being asshats just takes the fun outta that.

Very true. Parents increasingly seem to think the internet is a better alternative ... what the hell for?. *sighs*. People suck Smile

This is a Prime Number card is it not - can anyone spot either the letter corners or the Playing Card details?

Oh, and for those who didn't notice (like me before I double-checked) it's got some of the letter shapes on it, and it's 7 of spades.

Second post Razz For completeness, the letter shapes look like an O in the top-left and a T perhaps in the bottom left. They probably make more sense when combined with the rest of the shapes.

EDIT: Looking at the big picture, looks like it's the corner of an E in the bottom left, not a T.

Well, just to confirm, the top part is part of a letter O and the bottom is part of the letter E

Yeah. I think Someone is away on holiday at the moment. Apparently had to take time off with stress - he gets overworked you see, by the lazy sods who always expect "Someone" to do everything for them.

Did anyone else notice the lack of 'as I was GOING to St.Ives I PASSED a man..'

This card says nothing about whether he was or was not going to St. Ives.

It's a very well known riddle. I think I first heard it as a child. When one says passed they generally mean they went by them. If he went "passed" as in overtook him, it would of been more explicit.

It took me a while to notice that I have seen the cat before. It features Melvin, Olli Leivers beloved kitty cat. A photo of him can be found here.

You may also notice that the style of the card is the same as the Telegraph Puzzle spread.

Well personally, I've only ever known the riddle to say 'I met a man...' rather than 'passed'. Passed to me suggests they were headed in the same direction - which confuses things somewhat.

I've always hated this riddle for its ambiguity. Whether the man you met was coming from or going to St. Ives, it quite clearly asks "Kits cats sacks and wives, how many were going to St. Ives?" Got that? "Kits cats sacks and wives", not me, not the guy I met, "Kits cats sacks and wives".

To answer the question we have to know whether the speaker was a kit, a cat, a sack, or a wife, which it does not say, plus the number of each that were also going to St. Ives. Regardless of whether the man you met was coming from or going to St. Ives, any number of kits, cats, sacks, or wives could also have been coming from or going to St. Ives at the same time. Perhaps one of the wives was carrying 2 sacks, while 3 cats and 128 kits were going to St. Ives. There is absolutely no way to tell.

Now in the traditional rhyme the man one met was surgically joined to the entire menagerie and was going in the opposite direction, so none were going to St. Ives. Obviously then, the answer is zero, because I am the only one going to St. Ives and I am not a kit, a cat, a sack, or a wife.

But even that one is wrong.

What a lame puzzle.

It's not a lame puzzle, you just can't think about it that hard.
