[UPDATE] The Ooze Zone - 27th June 2006 - Slacker

Slacker

Nev was right about one thing: business and pleasure are mutually exclusive.

You volunteer to do someone a favour and then it's hassle, hassle, hassle. I can't just walk into Crypto and interrogate people - especially now that the Academy's broken up for the summer. What does she want me to do? Go round to Nev's place and ask him out for a drink? Yes, we worked together, but Nev and I never exactly socialised outside the office - maybe a swift one after work with everyone else, but that was it. I don't even know where he lives.

Anyway, I'm not convinced he'd say any more to me than he has already. Nev's the kind of bloke who permanently fears for his job. Frankly, if he wasn't working in Crypto, I've no idea what he'd do with himself - I don't think he'd risk it. Camden puts the fear of Gyvann in him, so there's no point in me trying to squeeze him without a good, persuasive reason for him to talk. And I don't have one. Maybe I'll think of one, but don't count on it - I haven't come up with one yet, and I've had plenty of encouragement in my ear. I couldn't even go to my jamming session this weekend without getting a motivational talk about my priorities.

I'd still like to help out, but this is starting to get old.

...Sorry. Just blowing off some steam. Normal service will be resumed

I'm still of the opinion that Nev managed to get some kind of message into his words, beyond the roundabout prose he was using. "But I've probably said too much already. Not a word, Caine, understand?" Hmmm. This latest post feels, to me, like we're missing something.

I've e-mailed Caine to ask why he put particular words in italics in the transcript - maybe Nev particularly stressed them somehow, I dunno.

Might be nothing, but thought it was worth chasing up.

Here's the perfect excuse to get talking to Nev. Have a lad's night out. Surely Caine has a couple of gigs coming up and maybe Von, Kurt and even Garet would welcome a break from the normal worries for the lads from the CRT. Just a thought.

How about this? (I already mailed it, figured it wouldn't hurt.)

Why don't you come to Nev with some sort of crypto puzzle that you're having trouble with? That's a perfectly valid excuse to get a little more chat in, seems like. We could even write one for you; maybe cook it so the solve will allow Nev an opportune time to at least hint at whatever information he's holding back.

Given the post is discarding the idea of asking Nev out for a drink, I'm not sure a lad's night out would work.

Perhaps we could ask Nev to take a quick look over 13th Labour?

LOVE IT! Let's make a crypto problem to which the solution is "CRT sensitive". Something to which, once he found the answer, he'd be instantly drawn in. Like, "I've intercepted communications related to the CRT project, but cannot crack the code. This is very sensitive to the project and cannot be leaked. Bla bla bla." I'm not sure what we'd have for the solution, but something that would get him talking. We wouldn't even have to solicit it. Good idea?

How about using some of the leaked academy emails from here?

I'm going to ask the stupid question: Why does Camden put the fear of Gyvann in Nev? What is it that Camden does?

On June 16th, Caine wrote:
Camden knocked on the window and summoned Nev back inside, waving a key. Nev said goodbye and scuttled off.

Now, I realize that the key could be Nev's, but how likely is it that someone would just leave their key lying around? Maybe I am reading too much into this minor character, but it just seems to me that this is a bit strange.

I wish I had a good idea for Caine; I think he'll ignore the Shuffled or 13th Labour ideas as they're our problems.

I definitely think it'd go better if we wrote our own. I'm waiting for Caine to say aye or nay before chomping away at that, though.

I don't think they usually do a lot of communicating back and forth when the ball is clearly in our court. I wish they did, but I think we should get our complete plan (with crypto puzzle) in place and present it. I'm not a big fan of using the leaked e-mails as the messages because I don't think we want people to know about that, but maybe if we can pick a harmless portion and not say what it is. In any event I'd like to suggest the encoding method used for Primer. It works well with the number theory stuff that he's supposed to know and if there's no clues, but just numbers, it might not be that obvious. We could take a long message and break it up into shorter numbers so anagramming would be realistic for him. Good?

Sounds good, now we just need the go ahead from Caine.

I say we give him Shuffled or 13th labor and let them have a go at it.

I don't imagine Caine will reply. It's ... not really done.

As an encrypted message, might I suggest: "Tristan". Just "Tristan". That should be enough to get Caine's attention.

Smile

So like really, how would you go about building an encrypted message? anyone can build a cute puzzle, but real live encyrption takes some skill I believe. I'm all elbows.

Not sure Caine can realistically present him with Shufffled or 13th labour. He's got no reason to - it couldn't be in order to get the solutions, because as a member of the CRT he must know the solutions because he was part of the team that set them. And besides, he wouldn't want to get the answers for us, as the whole point is that we solve them ourselves. It would be like your maths teacher giving you the answers to this year's maths exam.

And I can't see him presenting them to Nev as a challenge - 'see whether you can crack the codes that are stumping the Earthers' - because of course he can, he's not only a Perplexian but a Perplexian expert crypotologist. No challenge at all for him, I reckon.

No, we need something more direct, I reckon.A more powerful motivating factor than his fear of his boss.
