[META/SURVEY] Opinions

So, what was your opinion on the conclusion of eon8?

I personally think it's a great experiment and I'm happy to have been involved. Watching it was fun!
Though, I feel sorry for the guy's bandwith...

I feel sorry for uF's bandwith! But yeah, it was awesome. Nice to see some new people come in, even if we did get people-flooded.

As much as I enjoyed the end, I'm enjoying seeing the angry reactions of people more. Sheesh!

I liked the fact that it lacked information, thereby forcing you to create your own explanations and theories. Very well done.

It could of been better. This quote from /. summarizes my feelings about it.

Quote:
The problem is, he didn't "see how people would react to an absence of information". He provided some information, and did it in a way that would make most people think immediately of military operations (using obviously encrypted data, terms like "deployment", etc.)

And he's surprised that people "expected the worst"?

If he had been serious, he wouldn't have left any (immediately) human readable text on the website. Instead, he prejudiced his own experiement by providing just enough information to prompt certain thoughts. If he had labelled his map "Elvis Sightings" instead of "Deployment Map", he probably would have gotten an entirely different set of reacations.

bolding is mine

Maybe this is splitting hairs, but I don't take "absence of information" to mean "no information". Simply having a domain name provides some information, how would you get around that? The creator said he wanted eon9 because it sounded cool, but couldn't get it, so took eon8. "eon8" was then interpreted by some as the end of the world, using a religious text. So certainly this prompted certain thoughts. "deployment" didn't make me think of military terms, but I live in a country with a less promonent military. The point is, regardless of the connotations the words carry people started making large assumptions...like terrorism, because as we all know terrorist always warn of their attacks before they happen, because it's more efective that way Screwy

The value lies in looking at the extrapolation people did of the information provided.

I'm not really suprised people expected the worst, and maybe I'm splitting hairs again. As a another /. post said;

No -- it would be foolish to rule out the worst. Assuming the worst is just paranoid. It's the kind of thinking that would have triggered WWIII if it had dominated.

i think it was a great thing...I only learned with 3 hrs left in the count down. My friend and i enjoy breaking something apart (logicaly) and determining what it is.
with 2 hrs left (8pm Mountan) we both agreed that it had to be some sorta mass experament, to see how people react to lack of information.

>Chat log pic<

I have to say im one of the thousands upon thousands that found this site due to a Google search on E8. And i found the First part of the disuction quite interesting (read about 10pages+)

Although i have to agree with most people that the Setup of E8 was "Hinting" Military. there was just to much that turned me away from it...

I have to also agree with Mike though. When faced with the unknown, and no way to explane it...the best course of acction is....Destroy it?!? Granted 90% of the theroys were negative. But there are also the positve ones out there...So say this was positve for some reason....
"pretend hacker: YEA...I just brought down E8...I just saved the world from some global attack....
*July 1 hits, and information is released that it was sappose to be something good*
*Pretend hacker goes emo in a closet for being so stupid*"

All in all...I liked the idea, But the results didn't supprise me

And now im off to browse the this site, and see what other interesting things are here. mabey next time i'll get lost in the craze

here is something for all of you that don't want to be finished...http://untitled.com/

Laughing

Because, yes indeed, bringing down a website does halt every other physicial, wordly action that may be connected with it as well...

Concerning my opinion on the whole thing, I agree with what colin said above, and even disregarding the fact that "terrorists" wouldn't be expected to announce what they were up to up front (as someone on Slashdot pointed out, the CCC did use to do that), I find it quite hard to believe anyone would seriously consider that this website had anything to do with real terrorism... I mean, come on, stuff like this is how terrorism looks in the movies... you think Al Qaida have some fancy webdesigner stashed away somewhere to make Flash countdowns for them?! Rolling Eyes

All in all, my best guess was to assume it was the trailhead of a game, and dmax already explained why that was a very logical assumption, most likely even the assumption supported by Occam's razor Wink

I loved the whole experience. I think it was also a fantastic experiment. He definetly made the record books (at least on YTMND).
