[EVENT] Registration Opens for San Francisco, Aug 12 Event

Information here!

You can register to be a ground player (in teams eventually, I think), a spectator, or an online participant.

Quote:
THE SAN FRANCISCO CONNECTION

WHERE: The Palace of Fine Arts Theatre, San Francisco (map)

WHEN: Saturday August 12th, 10:30am to 5pm

COST: Nothing!

The Perplex City Academy and Mind Candy are proud to announce The San Francisco Connection: a free live event celebrating the opening of a new data link between Perplex City and Earth. In true keeping with Perplex City's spirit, the puzzle scribes at the Academy have decided to make the day more interesting by setting a series of delightfully devious puzzles and games that will have to be solved before the link is activated.

Everyone is welcome to take part in the event, which will see up to 500 players running across central San Francisco, solving clues and cracking codes. There'll also be a new high-tech slant to the games that's never been seen before. It doesn't matter if you're completely new to Perplex City or a grizzled veteran, the event will be enjoyable for all and there'll also be plenty of opportunities for people to swap cards and tips, and learn all about Perplex City.

If you can't make it to San Francisco, don't worry, you'll still be able to take part in an accompanying online treasure hunt and keep track of proceedings on the game - you'll even be able send words of encouragement to (or heckle) the people on the ground in San Francisco.

Lots of details at perplexcity.com!

(And I registered as a player - now to book tickets!)

I'll try to post up some maps, a google earth place marker, and travel tips for out of towners. A couple of quick notes:

Where is the Live Event
Palace of Fine Arts:
37°48'10.39"N, 122°26'53.74"W
http://www.palaceoffinearts.org/

Right next to the Exploritorium
http://www.exploratorium.edu/

Getting into San Francisco by Air:

You have 2 primary airports to choose from, Oakland International (OAK) and San Francisco International (SFO). A third airport exists, San Jose International (SJC), but it is a significant drive down the peninsula. SFO is a United Airlines hub. Most of the discount carriers (Southwest, JetBlue) only service Oakland. You can find some pretty good cross country non stop flights on JetBlue.

Directions from Airports to the Hilton, Fisherman's Wharf (close by)

San Francisco Int'l Airport

Distance from hotel: 7 mi.
Drive time: 25 min.

Directions: Highway 101 North to Highway 280 North. Follow sign for Port of San Francisco. Hwy 280 becomes Embarcadero. Follow Embarcadero one mile. Left on Bay Street. Hotel is 1/2 mile on right at Bay and Jones Street.

Typical Minimum Charge for transportation

Limousine USD 50.00
Super Shuttle USD 14.00
Taxi USD 35.00

Oakland International Airport

Distance from hotel: 13 mi.
Drive time: 35 min.

Directions: Highway 880 North to Highway 80 West (Bay Bridge) Harrison Exit; turn right onto Harrison. Turn Left on Emarcadero for one mile. Left on Bay Street. Hotel is 1/2 mile on right at Bay and Jones Street

Typical Minimum Charge for transportation

Subway/Rail USD 5.00
Taxi USD 45.00

Getting to San Francisco by Train
Train - Amtrak has stops to Oakland/Emeryville, then to the San Francisco Financial District, Ferry Building, and Fisherman's Wharf via bus

Housing
You can find hotels on Lombard Street or near Fisherman's Wharf. As a benchmark, the Fisherman's Wharf Hilton is going for ~$250 a night.

http://www.hilton.com/en/hi/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=SFOFWHF

If you want to take part in the activities at Endgame, in Oakland, and are willing to take the bus into the City, then the Oakland Marriott has rooms going for ~$120 a night, is 0.1 mile from the nearest BART station, and is across the street from Endgame.

I signed up as a spectator rather than a player, but I did sign up... yikes. Thank heavens for frequent flyer miles.

I and my wife-to-be (will the 15th come already?) are in as full players. Looking forward to putting faces to names.

I am in like Flynn. Very Happy I will be rushing to get there since my flight does not arrive until 9:42, and I am getting a car, but I will be burning down the 101 to get there. All my experience driving in Houston rush hour will finally pay dividends!

Are teams set up randomly on site, or do people collaborate beforehand and make groups, or both?

I recall reading somewhere that there will be some group problem solving and that you can register teams later. Can't find my source though.

The page itself, just after the registration box, says
Quote:
For part of the event, players will work in teams, so if you have a group of friends you'd like to play with, get them all to sign up!

So I assume you'd be able to make your own teams either on the day or beforehand at some point.

Anyhoo, I'll never make it out there so I guess I should sign up for online.

Decisions decisions, Should I leave my sister in LA for the day and join in the festivities or help her move in like a good boy?

Would I be the first PXC player to be at both?
And I don't like skating up hill and the man doesn't like it when I skitch cars...

If people are not currently Perplex City players, but they want to participate on a team with me, is that legal? Or do they have to register as a Perplex City player, then be eligible to join a team?

From the above website

Can I or my friends come along, even if they aren't registered?

We would strongly suggest they register. We don't like to turn anyone away, but the venue does have a maximum capacity that we can't exceed. Plus, there's just a limited number of players that we can manage.

If you'd like to take part, all you have to do is register - the event is completely free. Enter your details below and let us know whether you'll be in San Francisco on the day, or online. There's a limited number of spaces for players in San Francisco, so sign up quickly - but only if you're sure you'll be able to make it.

Based on both of those snippets, I registered myself and my wife. That way I know we are in. I suspect that this will be jammed and if your friends are not registered, they will be turned away.

Aye. You don't have to a registered Perplexian to play, but in order to participate in the live event, you will either have to create an account for the live event or you can use your PXC account. However, you do need a seperate account for each person participating ... so invite them all down.
