[UPDATE][PUZZLE] Hang Separately - New Post, Music

http://www.hangseparately.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=16

Lyn's posted a new section "Now for something completely different" (hello, Monty Python) and has posted the following ("A Word to the Wise..., ...is Enough"):

Quote:
You've been asking a lot of questions. I'm not going to answer them directly. You didn't think it would be that easy, did you?

But you have been remarkably clever about finding many of the secrets I've hidden at edoclaundry.com, so I'll make you a deal:

There are some things I've been holding back. Someone pretty wise once said three can keep a secret if two of them are dead, and with a couple corpses and a lot of secrets in my wake, I don't want the information to fall into the wrong hands, so I've hidden it.

You can't trust anyone these days.

If you're smart enough to find it, maybe you're the right people to have it.

Well, perhaps this is the start of us hunting down the videos we know don't belong to clothing bits Wink

Any thoughts on where to start?

Note - the quote of Lyn's comes from Benjamin Franklin Razz

And continuing (thanks Wojcik for catching what I missed ;D )

<Wojcik> in the post... is a link... looked at source to see it

<Wojcik> is in comment of file

MP3 file is linked from the "Find it" in the last line:
http://www.hangseparately.com/lyn/Sample.mp3

Someone was playing with their keyboard :p

Sounds like a bit of basic ragtime with something? overlayed on top - morse? There's some significant chords on there that are funky.

The comment as wojcik pointed out of the mp3 is of interest as well. What is that?

CONTINUING I'll just keep talking to myself.

So the comment in the file turns into Hex gibberish of foreign punctuation (see http://www.paulschou.com/tools/xlate/ for translation).

What *I* hear in the music itself is this (I broke the 30 second clip into two 15 second bits, as there appears to be a long pause as the background theme repeats):

1st half
.-. / ..- / -

2nd half
--. / ..- / -. / -

or RUT GUNT

/me pauses
That can't be right. Granted, the last letters of each could be .'s, making it RUEGUNT/RUEGUNE/RUTGUNE or I could totally be smoking some draperies.

I wonder if these are the clips that might have been found from the metal jeff and digital swallow hats. If there were any hats to be had.

Very roughly, the chords, with each bar seperated by semicolon, are:

G; C; G; D; G; C; Bm, D7; G;
G; C, E7; Am, D; G; G; C; Bm, E7, A7, D7; G, D;
G

This is all pretty elemental classical training/counterpointy stuff. There ARE some off notes in a middle voice in a couple spots, most audibly the very beginning, but it's hard to hear the whole way through, and is definitely within the chords most of the time. Worth more digging.

Yay! Puzzle!

For what it's worth, I think the Hex is an artifact of the program used to create the mp3 file, not a comment/clue.

I believe I've picked out the top line -- that harpsichord or guitar or whatever it is -- for the first half of the song:

BGE CG
BF#G BAED
BC EGF#G

I've tried messing with various permutations, including some that take into account the difference between notes an octave apart, but it hasn't led anywhere immediately obvious.

Just as some of the notes don't seem to fit their chords, the timing of some of the notes seems a bit unusual. I'm going to try playing with that next.

My ears are blown from too many punk shows. I patiently await Phaedra's keen ear on these matters. Yes. I will wait for her return from this county of doors.

Re: Yay! Puzzle!

Melody for the rest of it (maybe):

BBA GEED
DED AG
DGF#ED CC

Regarding the peculiar syncopations, I had the thought that maybe only the notes falling directly on beats are significant, and the rest are there just to make it sound like music. Alas, nothing coherent came from that.

Applying principles of reverse-engineering: The notes and rhythms that seem the most out of place are most likely to be components of the message. Other notes and rhythms may be significant, or may be added to make the end result sound good. There must also be some way to distinguish message components from non-components, besides guessing randomly.

And now I have Lyn's song stuck in my head.

It sounds like a song that I should know, but I don't. Like a Jimmy Buffet song . . .

New post on the thread from Lyn:
Quote:
In celebration of the Fourth of July, which happens to be one of my favorite holidays, a few hints:

1. It appears the software I used to create the file inserted some numbers into the "comments" field of the mp3. I wouldn't waste my time looking for meaning there.

2. Abigail would probably roll her eyes at me for this, but the pitch isn't really important.

3. All the notes in the guitar part are the same length.

I may be grasping at straws because I have zero ear for notes, but it does seem really familiar. Like maybe I'd know it if the guitar notes weren't all the same length.

paging joebrent

Do we need a musician here? Get joebrent (or bagsbee) to listen to this and see what they make of it.

I'm no musician or anything, but if the notes are the important part, and the pitch of the notes isn't carrying any meaning, then doesn't it stand to reason that the length of the notes does?

Could there be Morse or something like it coded into the note lengths or the syncopation?

Yes there could. As Scrappy tried above, although perhaps she was not listening to the right things. Why don't you give it a try and see if you can figure out if you are right?

I'm in the process of putting my ears through the sample until it sticks in my head. Given my four years of show choir, this unfortunately will not take long.

One idea has occured to me in regards to the morse bit; Lyn says that the guitar notes are all the same length. However, some are chords, and some are not. It's taxing my brain to separate which are and which aren't, but I have even money on the - being chords and the . being simple plucks.

Yes, I know, throw a monkey wrench in and overanalyze. ^_^;

My $0.02: I do not believe that this means that the particular notes are completely meaningless. (Primarily because some of them are just too strange to be there if Lyn could have used other notes instead.) I interpret this to mean that the particular pitch -- A, F#, whatever -- is not important. However, relative pitch -- down a third, up a sixth, etc. -- could still be significant.

Lyn wrote:

Theoretically, this could be calling our attention to the fact that all notes in the piano part are not the same length, but if I were forced to speculate -- and I am -- I'd say Lyn is trying to tell us to abandon the Morse code angle.

Another newbie here...

The numbers that were inserted into the comment field mean nothing, but what about the actual info that shows up when I play the song on iTunes?
I don't think anyone mentioned them yet. (Most aren't really anything new, though.)

Song title: Sample
Length: 0:36
Artist: Lyn
Album: edoc
Year: 2006
Beats per minute: 120
Composer: Jessica Price

They may mean nothing at all, but does the composer mean anything to anyone, or even the BPM?

Also, I separated the stereo tracks of the recording and inverted it, which almost completely removed the guitar. Which makes me think the piano may be important...?

Has anyone more music savvy isolated the piano and just listened to that? Other than sounding vaguely familiar, it meant nothing to me.
