Horror ARGs

I may just be too new to the wide world of ARGs, but it seems like most of the ARGs running are either set in the present day (plus or minus a couple years) as spy romps, criminal underground adventures, or something like that. That makes sense... after all, cryptology does figure prominantly in the skills used to go through an ARG. Still, spy romps and watered down SciFi aren't really my thing. No, the ARG that got me into the hobby was run by Wizards of the Coast on their message boards for the Hecatomb card game. H.P. Lovecraft was a fairly obvious influence on that one... But after looking around for an ARG or two to get back into things, I haven't really been able to find anything to do with Horror or decent SciFi. Am I not looking in the right places, or are pretty much all ARGs basically the same?

ARGs do run the gambit of genres. The Beast was set in the future. Metacortechs was based in the world of The Matrix. We've had Halo, poker, alien crop circles and space stations. We've solved crime sprees, fought the Devil and seen some pretty terrifying game shows and housing complexes. We've even seen a bit of comedy as well.

But for all of those original ideas, you'll always have the cliched games. The ones where someone is missing and their car blows up thanks to the evil goverment corporation - basically because it's so easy to fall into that type of story. Evil corporations and kidnappings really lend themselves to crypticness, and, combined with blogs and IM, makes it really easy for someone without a lot going for them to push out a game.

My only advice to you is, if you don't see anything you like now, just wait a little while. New games are always coming out. Just keep checking back to News & Rumors to see if anything strikes your fancy. You do have to be a bit proactive tracking down games you like, since there have been a few high quality smaller games that haven't gotten the attention that the big 'blockbusters' have. You'll come across a lot of duds, but they do help you gauge a good game when you see it.

In that the monsters are hinted at rather than seen in the light, it may look like all ARGs are basically man vs. man. But look at Chasing the Wish, that was man vs. supernatural. Just because the monster wears a human face doesn't make it less of a monster.

Keep in mind that the "R" is Reality. Reality that has been tweaked slightly from how the world looks.

I don't know how long you have been lurking around ARGs but as you have only been a member of this forum since July 1st, I'd say you just need to wait and keep looking and an ARG that comes closer to something you enjoy will show up. But you have got to be willing to look beneath the surface of the game and really participate in order to find it.

Well I'm glad that I am right in figuring that I'm just too new to the genre... It's good to know that people do actually do ARGs other than missing persons, secret agents, and watered down SciFi. If nothing else, I can watch a couple ARGs and the News and Rumors section and if none come up that are to my liking I could always try my hands as PM...

I think Rookery Tower last year was rather ghostly. Smile

Wasn't LCP about a haunted poker game or something?

And urban hunt was man vs man, but it was supernatural also.

CTW2 is supernatural in nature, and really great and only kinda confusing at the moment.

i prefer more realistic games myself rather than futuristic or transdimentional ones, and i happen to like them with a bit of spook - I always thought I did play "horror" games {more horror than sci-fi at least}. They do show up now and then. Welcome to our forums, and to the world of ARGing. I'll just second what others have said, stick around and lurk for a while if nothing bites the ARG bug now, because something is bound to come along!

Yep, Last Call Poker was about a haunted poker site and cursed gun.

And of course, there was some time travel, history, encounters with the dead, doomed romance and a host of other things as well.

Specifically about horror ARGs, I did know of at least a couple that were in the planning stages a while back, but I really don't know what happened with them. I should check up on them.
