It looks like Anthrax beat me to the translations! For those that want to play the home game, all of the files, results, and Java code to perform the conversions is available: http://netninja.com/scrapbook/Metacortex/metadex/BethFiles/

Longer explanation, I was trying to decode all the files when I posted that. Smile

Open the files in a hex editor. The files only contain two characters, represented by 0x00 and 0x01. Everywhere an 0x00 is, assume that should be a binary 0. Everywhere that 0x01 occurs, assign it a binary 1. This will give you a plain text file with what I posted.

To make it easier, just do a find and replace with "0x00" becoming "0x30" and "0x01" to "0x31". Then open the file up in notepad. You will see a string of 1's and 0's. Plug this into http://nickciske.com/tools/binary.php to get the text.

It appears to be code, perhaps the code that the Matrix uses to interpret human speech/thought. Did this come from the other man in the area of the tent?

I think this is code governing the area and the people within.

A breakdown of the files, looking at it through the events depicted in Beth's email:

Quote:
I turned and left the tent half way hoping that when I turned back around he'd be gone. But he was just stood there. I tried to talk to him. Nothing. I asked if he saw it, said hello. Nothing. Asked if he was ok, if he understood english. Still nothing. Then I asked if he knew what was happening and he started to leave.

2003103172912: Event begins. Devining current visual range, notices tent about 25 ft away.

20031031172917: Beth's first interaction: Hello?

20031031172919: Interpreting message.

20031031172924: A response should be made, but there is none. A diagnostic is made of the hearing subsystem of the man. The code lowers the ambient noise, beleiving that the "man" can not hear the question.

20031031172925: What are you doing here? / Did you see what happened?

20031031172929: "Are you ok?"...so the code runs a diagnostic of all subsystems. There is a problem with the communications and the memory subsystems.

20031031172937: Installing an english language subroutine.

20031031172940: Can you speak?

20031031172942: Hello?

20031031172945: Do you understand english?

20031031172951: Beth's sixth interaction, "What's happening?" The man takes this question and interprets the information around it.

20031031172955: Man beginning to leave.

20031031172959: Hello?

20031031173006: (Not sure, I assume Beth again asks what's going on, and the man again interprets the data around it)

20031031173011: Final attempt at the system attempting a response, but it cannot, due to the mind subsystem not being present.

In Beth's message to Kat, she says that while standing "in" her tent, she sees a man standing 20-25 feet away.

Here's part of one of the first decoded file:

Code:
<context_inference subject="tent" confidence="0.8" status="success"/>
<data vis_range_optimal="1000m" vis_range_current="16.2m" dist_to_obj="8.2m"/>

Notice it says dist_to_obj="8.2m"... That's rougly 25 feet Shocked

I'm thinking we've decoded the messages of the "man" - who is some kind of agent/bot/program, and his communication or internal thoughts were "intercepted" by Beth (probably her PDA) and then she found these files on there and uploaded them to her MetaDex.

This also tells us (and him) that the source of the voice is within visual range and is seen as "tent". But tents don't talk. Very Happy

He narrows down his search to objects in the vacinity of the sound and does some kind of "self awareness" test on each of them to try to find which one is human.

So He can't see HER, possibly because she's half woman / half tent.

Or because she slipped dimensions or something.

Edits: Clarity

Edit: Correction: It does a "self awareness" test on all objects it does an "is imagined" test on the narrowed down list.

I'll leave it to the more computer inclined people.

So I guess it's been solved. It's basically a detailed explanation of what she told Kat.

I'm going to make a really wild theory. And then leave it alone. Put it on the back burner. Because this may reveal some of the movie it's in spoiler box:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Maybe the man is Neo. I remember hearing that. Neo is unconscious because he has been jacked into the matrix without having that thing put into the back of his head. So maybe he's a little out of it. And he thinks he's in a dream, which he is, but it seems even more like a dream. And he's causing disruptions in the matrix and he doesn't know it. So this man, or Neo, is just walking around, half out of it and not knowing what to think yet. Then when the movie comes out, he's most likely fully aware.

Yes. It's wild. And take it was a small, samll grain of salt. I recommend not taking it at all. It's pretty late. In the morning, I'll realize this is a farfetched theory.

The files show you how Labyrinth thinks and works. The variables deal with things like what kind of response is needed, who labyrinth is interacting with, search methods, etc.

One phrase, "heuristic narrowing", indicates to me that Labyrinth employs A.I. of some kind. Only an intelligent mind is able to look at a set of seemingly random data in a holistic manner and then intuit a relation or answer.

Heuristic algorithms are common in todays spam filters. They are also needed to create agents which are able to interact with systems that arn't identical or mapped out for them, so they are able to determine the contents of a message in an unknonwn format.

Here's my interpretation of the code. Stuff in quotes is what the man is thinking, stuff not in quotes is what I'm thinking, stuff in question marks is stuff I'm not sure of.

------20031031172912------
"I think I see a tent, I'm pretty sure it's a tent, successful identification of tent"

"My optimal visual range is 1000m, I can currently see 16.2m, the distance to the tent is 8.2m."

------20031031172917------
?? Attempt to send/receive greeting ??

------20031031172919------
"Let's find out what that is-- OK, it's a human."

?? anything else ??

------20031031172924------
--system diagnostic--

"Optimal audio reception is 1.0 - my current reception is at .9 and active. Minimum audio data recieve level is .3, max 21.7. My ambient noise filter is active, noise reduction is active, and the human's speech level is currently at 3.2."

------20031031172925------
?? He's trying to figure out Beth's intentions, maybe ??

------20031031172929------
"System Check - Sensory @ .7 (active), locomotion @ 1.0 (optimal), communications @ .5 (concerned - Natural language generation not present), Memory @ .3 (error), data retrieval is corrupted.

------20031031172937------
"I'll try to install some natural language, English, US."

------20031031172940------
????

------20031031172942------
?? Re-attempt to send/recieve greeting ??

------20031031172945------
?? He's requesting how to use language or interpret language ??

------20031031172951------
?? Beth says "What's happening" - He hears it, processes it, but doesn't understand what she's saying. ??

------20031031172955------
?? no idea ??

------20031031172959------
?? 3rd attempt to send/recieve greeting ??

------20031031173006------
?? "is imagined by" - what the heck - I'm really confused by this one ??

------20031031173011------
???? stumped again ????

Just googled "error 259". It seems that most common is:

Error 259.
Ad hoc updates to system catalogs are not enabled. The system administrator must reconfigure SQL Server to allow this.

Isn't this the same guy that was at the incident with the horse? I wonder if he follows "events" or causes them.

Yup. I was thinking the same thing.

I kinda want to know what this guy's problem is; it's named 259. Can somebody savvy in these things *wink at BriEnigma* explain it plz? Is it an upload/access problem, or it does it indicate that the main system's catalogues are in error? Is it the guy's problem, or the system's?

The way I see it, there's 2 possibilities here:

1) The "world" of the game is actually the Matrix. It would help to explain the weird stuff that's going on, and the man, who would then be some sort of program. (It would also help to explain the "wakeup" message Dina received on the subway sign - that whole "the Matrix has you" kind of thing...)

2) It's the "real" world, where there is no Matrix. But how do we then explain this "man"? Is he an attempt at an AI computer/robot? Perhaps by MetaCortex?

I'd kind of like to believe #1, just because it's just "cooler" than #2 Razz
