[META/OT] So long, and thanks for all the fish!

I'd like to wish you all luck in the final round of the Hunt, and say it was nice getting to know you!

I hope some of you will stick around and look into the main focus of this forum, Alternate Reality Games (ARGs). One of UF's original members, and a well known Puppetmaster (or "PM" – an ARG creator), imbri, has put up a wonderful resource for those new to ARGs that you may want to check out.

Currently running ARGs featured on Unfiction include:

  • PERPLEX CITY – I believe this is the longest-running game in ARG history. Help the Perplexians find their missing cube (and, if I recall correctly, get a $200,000 prize if you succeed). The game sells puzzle cards, which are supposedly not necessary to purchase to have a chance to win, but from what I hear are gorgeous.
  • CATCHING THE WISH – The sequel to the very popular Chasing the Wish game, by well-known puppetmaster Dave Szulborski (whose credits include Art of the Heist, Urban Hunt, and Who Is Benjamin Stove, among others), Catching the Wish also has tie-ins to the Chasing the Wish graphic novels. Read the Alternate Reality Gaming Network (ARGN) article on the game here.
  • THE LOST EXPERIENCE – The Lost Experience is an online experience related to ABC's hit show Lost, although apparently you do not have to be familiar with the show to play and enjoy the game. I hear that it has a low barrier-to-entry for new players, and its forums are hopping. Read ARGN's review here.
  • EDOC LAUNDRY – Figure out who killed a band's manager, or just get some nifty shirts. This game is run by some of the people behind two of the most popular and best-known ARGs to date, the Beast and ILB. There's an ARGN article on it here, and a Guide, by our very own ScarpeGrosse (the admin who was helping moderate this forum).
  • STUDIO CYPHER – Studio Cypher is organized into monthly installments, and has both free and a pay-to-play levels of involvement. Read the ARGN article here. (Sorry, don't know much about this one, so if anyone has any more info to add…)

Finally, it's not an ARG, but it's by one of my favorite ARG companies, so if you're in the mood for more Pirates of the Caribbean fun, check out Dead Man's Tale.

In addition, there are a bunch of promising games coming up, including two with apparent tie-ins to shows on ABC. New possible games crop up almost daily in the News and Rumors forum, so I hope you'll stick around and take a look!

Nice playing with you. Smile

Hello all!
I finally signed up after playing along with you guys most of the way. I had problems with the plate section because of website errors where no matter what I did it would not accept the answer I had which was correct. So I turned to the internet and found you guys after a few days. I am really grateful for all the tips and the fact I could usually come and get a push in the right direction so I could get the answer. I was hope-in to win the car and it took me hours but I figured it out on my own, and that was worth the trip. It was really important to me to finish totally on my own. I am a single Mom and having a car like that would have been sweet and my daughter would have flipped, who knows for one reason or another I may still get there! I got my passport ready!!
I am glad the puzzles were different! It would not have been so fair otherwise. I just want to thank you all who did keep us updated and hinted us along. I know how to count much better now Wink and will not be afraid to try another hunt. Hoping of course, that it makes a little more sense in the figuring out. I just wanted to say thank you to you all, and to the monitors for keeping a clean and enjoyable forum. I used to monitor a forum for MSN years ago and i is VERY time consuming. Thanks!!!Thanks!! Thanks!!!

Deborah L.

In the wake...

Fare ye well ALL,

What a feeling to be so caught up in this adventure with such great people. For those of us that put so much time and effort into The Hunt, where it consumed our lives for a month, THANK YOU! I don't know how I am going to fill this gap now! Volvo has succeded in turning us into adventurers with a craving for more, that's for certain. We are now the crew of the S.S. Unfiction and with a little luck, might be consorting again someday.

I think a HUGE THANK YOU needs to be extended to Phaedra and Spacebass for their OUTSTANDING work on this site. It's also a good thing you got the new server when you did because, I can't imagine what it might have been like on the 12th without it (404). I was always able to make it through with a little refreshing...

Finally, my last share with everyone: Ever since the completed trails hack of The Hunt map came out, I had an inkling that this thing might end up in the islands of Seychelles. Ultimately though, it appears to have hit "Manmade Hole" where Castaway Cay lies. Interested if anyone else did this?

See you on the port-side...

Chris

What fish?

Thanks to Phaedra for her message, but I don't understand why she said "Thanks for the fish." Do those other games that Phaedra mentioned have a free car for a prize- LOL. I bet that Volvo will have another game for the next pirate movie, don't you?

Also thank you to the person who posted the map overlay. That was very interesting.

Well, this is why the good Lord created ARGs. Wink

SpaceBass does do an amazing job, doesn't he? Both on the technical side, and in the sense of the ethic and atmosphere he's established here that make it a great place to play. Very Happy

But I have nothing to do with the actual running of the site. I'm just a moderator. If anything, that credit goes to the other site admins: ScarpeGrosse, Jamesi, and Gupfee.

It's a reference to Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Wink

Well, Perplex City has a monetary prize (which e_nygma pointed out is actually $200,000, not $10,000 as I'd originally stated). But in general, no, most ARGs don't have "prizes." The reward is the fun of playing, getting to know other players, and the satisfaction of solving the story's mysteries.

Good bye to a great bunch of people!

I hope everyone that wanted to had the chance to take part in the semi finals! (unfortunatly for medical reasons I didnt so you can rest safe in the knowledge that there was one less person in the running for the prize!)

All the best to whoever gets to go and dig and if its anyone from the forum and you win any chance i can have the crate its stored in? Very Happy Wink
