Do you think so? Do you think that is the case? I suppose there is no way to really find out/track the calls, but what would be the purpose of such a call? If theywanted to talk, wouldn't they just leave a message, as opposed to music/ or a hang up?

Hey all,
Has anyone figured out what the deal is with that DC number? Strange phone calls keep coming in to one of our phones, with the number 202-381-1294. A message is left, sometimes music, sometimes just a hang up (never any speaking voice or breathing though) and a call back just says the number does not exist. Please, please let me know if you have any information on this number or if anyone has any theories as to who it may be.
Thank you oh so much.
MsC.
IIRC, it's entirely possible to fake the number displayed if you know what you're doing and have a suitable VoIP phone provider. (The telephone provider may have more accurate caller information, but good luck getting it out of them.) Of course, it might be easier to put up a fake "this number does not exist" message...

Just call the phone company. Or, if you have the service, *69, which should call back the real source number not the display number...

I wonder if it is realted to this odd story http://www.homelandstupidity.us/2006/07/03/fourth-phone-numbers-station-501-588-1015/
"To date, no one has provided a solution to the messages, nor any good guesses as to who might be sending them or why. I personally believe the messages can be solved; they don't seem to exhibit enough randomness to be a modern cipher. What do you think is going on?"

Scyto - your point? Not the same phone numbers and no "code" from this caller. Thus irrelevant to this discussion. And kangaroo - payphones can be called, so "no such number exists" is an unlikely response. Why do you think it's a payphone?

Strange Number It's XM Radio.
They're either trying to sell you something or you're behind on your bill.

Ah - it's a SATELLITE payphone and that's why we can't call it...

202-380-1294 *and* 202-381-1294 Yes, when the call came in today (about the sixth time I've seen the number on my cell phone's caller ID, but I never answer if I don't know who it is) I picked up, someone asked to speak with Angel, and I told the caller they had the wrong number and to please delete my number from their database.
I did ask who was calling, and it was "XM Radio Reminder Service".
NOTE: Over the last two weeks, I've gotten calls that originate from 202-380-1294 as well as 202-381-1294 - just want to throw that additional number in there to enhance someone else's Google-Fu.

I've noticed ALOT when telemarketers call my house (or sometimes my cell phone.. grr..) it will come up with a bogus number to call back. Sometimes the number wont have anywhere near the correct number of digits. Sometimes they're way under the correct number, with no area code or anything too.

202-380-1294 I have the answer Okay so I live in Midvale, UT USA.. I was at school until about 30 minutes ago and I came into my room and heard a beep at first I didn't know what it was but then I found out that it was my cell phone so I looked at it and it said I had a missed call, no messages left just a hang up.
I called it back and it was busy... hung up and called it back 5 more times and it was still busy... I then begun reading the post some more and I just tried to call it back again and it is XM Radio.
I get an automated thing saying "Beyond AM Beyond FM Welcome to XM Satellite Radio"... so what it is, is that Reminder service i'm sure... because the question asked is "are you calling to continue your xm radio after your trial period?"
So yeah -- nothing to be scared about but I'm on hold now telling them I do not now nor have I ever had XM Radio. Its a pointless waste of money. Especially when I get activated recievers out of reposessions all the time (till the prepaid expired)...

This is quite interestig, as I've been getting calls from "Unknown Caller - Long Distance", that consist of silence (no breathing, even), then a hang-up. Unfortunately, the way my phone works, or possibly the way the caller has it set up, I can't get the number the call came from, but aside from that, it sounds pretty similar to what some of you are saying. Except I'm not participating in any ARGs (actively or otherwise) at the moment.
