*Bump* - we lost track of this discussion when we started posting Sarah's Blog updates individually.

Now that we have the Mask of History and there are issues with Phyllis thinking she saw Wes in the woods, maybe it is time to relook and pull out the relevent parts we SPEC'd earlier?

We now know that the mask of Knowledge was associated with Sarah and the library (other than the fact that she made the masks.)

Now that we are dealing with the Mask of History it's obvious that it's associated with Wes and his investigation of the history of Ong's Hat. The question is will something else be destroyed? Is Iris' store in some danger? Is it one of the dots on the 3-O-7 map?

Update July 26 - Choo Choo

Quote:
Choo Choo 26 Jul 06

During the dark part of the night, sometimes you can go to the edge of the woods and peer into the darkness, and if you're lucky, you will see a tiny spark in the distance. Wait long enough, and the spark might gain a twin. Stay very still and try not to blink. More tiny sparks will appear. Some of them seem very far away, and some a bit closer, all in a long column as far down your line of sight as you can see. Gradually the lights will turn brighter and brighter, coalescing into one large ball, so white that you can scarcely stand to look at it for long. And if you still haven't blinked, you will have that moment of clarity where you realize that you have watched the light at the end of the tunnel form, and it's bearing down on you like a freight train.

I have spent hours today talking to P. Off in the distance I can almost hear the train whistle.

I think the tongue from the mask of history may have some answers in it some how. I told sarah that I had the mask and she replied saying "If only she still had her tongue imagine what she would say" or something along those lines you can read her whole email here
http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16073

So maybe we need to have Sam or someone that could get into the police evidence take it?

Sarah represents Knowledge (but we're not sure she is "wearing" a mask).

I still think Phyllis represents History - and maybe that is why she can see Wes?

Asking Sam to steal evidence??? Sounds risky. Let's first try looking closer at the tongue itself.

there is definetly markings on it but the bag makes it hard to make out. Well Sam works for the city right? Maybe she can convince the mayor to release the evidence?

I agree with you Killalaz. The mask of history is meant to tell the story of history. How can it do that without a tongue. Surely Sam could convince them to release it from evidence or maybe it will be released later in the game.

I got the feeling the tongue was left only to lead us to know Keith had the masks. The tongue itself looks as if it has score marks just to make it look more realistic.

Just my two cents. Smile

[SPEC] "...with one tongue"

I believe that the tongue will have to end up in the safe hands of a trusted person, because of this line from the "All fo this will soon be gone" poem...
Quote:
Six voices with one tongue will call
and what Digitalis said to Dale in a dream...
Quote:
As long as one mask or wall remains to protect him, he cannot be stopped."
The tongue being part of the mask of History, could be the last bit that needs to be retrieved.

Busy getting the move together. I'll write more soon, but I found this stuff while I was packing up my things. Here's Nature, in all her glory! I found the sketch and a picture of the final product. With luck, she'll be safe soon, too.

So far this mask is my favorite. I'm jealous of whoever gets this one. Wink

*Is that design on the forehead, a Celtic knot? Sure looks like one. The mask also is very similar in appearance to the Green Man.

I love the celtic knot on the forehead! It's very reminiscent of my own tattoo (on my back not my forehead).

[spec] First Impression

[speculation]
My first impression when I look at the mask and the title "Like a Natural Woman," is the Amazon Warriors.

Here are some links:
http://www.sacred-texts.com/wmn/index.htm -- scroll down to Women Warriors and Heroines

http://www.biopark.org/peru/kidder-vine.html

http://www.biopark.org/peru/yagecstacy.html

The main page where the above two links come from:

http://www.biopark.org/peru/Amazon-library-ethnobotany.html

And from the wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Amazon

? Could this be giving us a hint as to finding who can see into other worlds??

Next: from here http://www.farvardyn.com/mithras7.php
(bold is mine)
Quote:

3 Miles, the Soldier

The god Mithras is always regarded as deus invictus, an invicible god, who as the Avesta records secures victory for his followers on the battlefield. In the struggle for the ultimate triumph of good over evil, Mithras is the associate of the god of good. Strictly speaking, every follower of the god was enrolled in his service, but the special initiation and the taking of the military oath set the seal on entrance into his ranks. The initiate took a very literal view of this; in Santa Prisca the Soldier is represented dressed in brown with a soldier's kitbag slung over his left shoulder and on the mosaic at Ostia this bag is his emblem together with lance and helmet, as he is under the particular patronage of Mars, the god of war. Some inscriptions call him pius or eusebes or even integer, that is to say god-fearing, devout or pure. Just as Corax and Nymphus represent the elements of light and water, so the Soldier could be regarded as symbolising the earth, and the Lion the element of fire. But there is no definite justification for this theory, since there is no evidence that the Soldier underwent baptism through the element of earth. For a description of his initiations Tertullian's vague account in De praescar.: must suffice, 'Mithras makes a sign on his soldiers' forehead'. The branding of the initiate applied therefore particularly to the attainment of the grade of Soldier unless Tertullian used milites to cover all initiate of whatever grade. Elsewhere Tertullian describes the initiation of the Soldier:

When he is being initiated in the cave, truly a camp of darkness, a wreath offered to him on the point of his sword and then placed on his head must be pushed off the head with the flat of his hand, and then laid on his shoulder with the words that Mithras alone is his wreath. And after that he is never garlanded again and this he possesses as evidence when he is tested with the military oath, and immediately, he is recognised as a soldier of Mithras when he has thrown off the wreath and said that it rests in his god.

Just as an ordinary soldier might be awarded a wreath for saving the life of an ordinary citizen or for being the first to storm an enemy fortress, so the Soldier of Mithras gained this distinction at his initiation. The offering of the wreath on the point of a sword was a final test of the initiate's courage. Tertullian calls this 'a mimicry of martyrdom'. One wonders if the object, lying at the feet of the initiate in a painting from Capua, (Fig. 31.) could be the sword mentioned by Tertullian. In any case, the Soldier of Mithras rejects the wreath with great humility saying 'Mithras alone is my wreath; my wreath rests in my god'. Like Mithras before him, he has taken the burden on his shoulders and in future he will fight against enemy forces under strict disciple. On a painting in Santa Prisca the Soldier is bearing the train of the initiate who precedes him.

Are we headed into the next grade that of the Miles/Soldier or in this case The Amazon Warrior?

Seems feasible since the female characters in CTW play important roles. And could this actually be Diana or do we need to get Phyllis back or who could it be?

Note: Once again, I haven't read all this stuff, just felt it was related and wanted to get it here so that anyone who has a better handle on this stuff than me might be able to connect the pieces together.

[Update] Them ol’ movin’ blues - August 5

Quote:
The other day as I was making a final check under my bed for stuff to pack, I noticed there was a rogue sunbeam under there, right under the middle. I had never noticed it before. I guess I'm always looking at the bed from the top. Maybe? Maybe I have noticed it before. I'm tired.

The dreams are back.

I hear things. Not just in the bathroom fan. In the rumble of machinery; in the shriek of the windshield wipers; in the creak of the door. I was walking around the new/old house and I swore someone was keeping pace with me. I caught them once: a stray footstep after I feinted a walk. Ha. Gotcha! How does one trap a figment of one's imagination? In a glass jar, I imagine. I can put it on my new mantel and shine the lights at it. I wonder what color a footstep is.

The dreams are different.

I am not here to talk about the dreams or my silly megrims. It is perfectly obvious that they're stress-related. The stress should be abating soon once things are squared away and me and my dreams will be right as rain. After all, there's a new house, which is an old house, and a new place for all my paper friends to live.

People ask me if I'm going to move into my old bedroom. I remember enough to say no. I don't remember much, but I'm sure that I spent some lovely childhood days there, and it will be nice to be as a child again. This is going to be good for me, good for the town. It's the right thing to do.

I bit off all my nails, but I don't remember when.

Where in the hell are my friends? I miss them. Is it I who is too busy or have they found other things to do with their time?

Sylvia,
I think you may have made an important conneciton. I could be wrong but if what I gathered from what you are saying is true. Then there is a connection between the masks and the seven grades of initiation of Mythras. I know there is only six masks but the seventh grade is "The Father". Which in this case would be Sarah the maker of the masks. So perhaps there is a connection here. Worth looking into no? On another note in keiths latest email he said he sent the next mask out to someone in LA. Is that any of us from the forum? I have not heard anyone speak of it and keith said he hasn't heard back from the person yet. I really hope it gets to the right hands as these masks are not only a great part of the story but wonderful works of art!
