[Meta] How does this ARG compare?

This is something I've been wondering ever since I started playing. I've never played an ARG before (I had no idea that they even existed), and I know that I'm not the only one. This ARG pulled in lots of new players. So, I have a question for the experienced ARGers. Very Happy

How would you compare this ARG to others that you've played? I'm thinking in terms of plot complexity, puzzle difficulty, general size (amount of webpages and info that you need to process), rate at which it's developing, things like that.

I tried going back and reading through the guides to some closed ARGs (the Beast and Lockjaw, specifically), but I got bored very quickly (heh), and you can't really get the feel of a game anyway when the solution to a puzzle is right there on the page.

Also, (and I ask this for absolutely no particular reason besides purely random curiousity Wink), how would you compare this ARG to Lockjaw?

Well, I can't offer much. I've only played The Beast (cloudmaker all the way, baby!), but this isn't nearly as intricate as that one was. Granted, the budget must've been sizable, the team building it was a comparable who's who and it was just so damn complex. But so far, I'd have to say with what we've seen so far (puzzle-wise), it's ... decent?

Updates aren't as frequent as The Beast. The multimedia is almost comparable in depth as the media in The Beast.

The interactivity has started to approach that of Majestic (not a real ARG, but it was fun while it lasted).

Agreed that this has sucked in new players and old ARGers alike, probably due to the property this is based on. But hey, we're all just a bunch of detective-like, puzzle-solving, crypto-breaking, obvious-missing fans of the genre.

In other words, if a puzzle isn't solved yet, and we still don't know the object of the game, it's fun.

But that's just my opinion...

I was actually wondering the same for some time... this is my first ARG'ing experience Wink as well. I get the feeling though that the game turned from puzzling to mostly just revealing bits of storyline once every few days... don't get me wrong, I'm still enjoying it a lot, but indeed, what i saw from The Beast was perhaps a little deeper...

I will reply for I have nothing better to do at this point in time! lelelele
I have only been playing ARGs for a year since september and I am hooked, lined and sinkered!(or suckered as the case may be! elellelel

In comparison to the few args that I have actively played, Push and Noahboddy as muralartist62 and ChasingThe Wish and Metacortechs as Sunny Du Pree, not to mention eavesdroppin on Hollywood Haunts, QND, Acheron the notorius Red Kore and capture the flagmonkey(sheese I do need to get a life!) I have to hand it to the PMs! what a brilliant marketing strategy and what a good thing you have done to bring ARGs more into the public conciousness. I dont give a flying flopp if this game is connected to WBs or not to me it is incidental... I MEAN WHAT A RIDE!!!!

To the newbies that have come on board I just wanted to stop and say how blown away I am by the level of talent and intellect that is exhibited on these forums, Kudos to the VETERANS as well!

I can only give limited comments on what I think of the puzzles cause I am not very good at them but I think that I have learned more about hacking than I ever expected too and I know that peeps have had fun figuring them out (with the exception of one, lelele) and my noodles been twisted more than once from them. In comparison to down time between puzzles it seems pretty in keeping with other ones that I have played...there is always downtime...

I am much better with following a storyline and my favorite thing to do is to spec (mostly troutage) about where the story is going..
This has been the most complicated storyline that I have followed thus far but thinking about it, the pace has been pretty realistic in following real time...ya know we would be in the dark if we (arent we?)were really apart of the metacortechs world.
Iam naive as to the way hackers work and what is a proper venue to leave secret messages the way they are but things seem to be unfolding as close to real life as one could expect, we are alternately the zoo'ed and the zoo'er(lelelle my noodle is charred)
Im expecting at any moment for my screen to go dark and the words
WAKE UP SUNNY to pop up in green on my screen.
With that said I agree that the story is starting to gel and make more sense....

I followed the storyline for CTW better than this one. I LOVED THAT ARG..all I have to say its too bad yall missed it...I can honestly say it changed my life for the better. The good words I have to say about CTW would take up too much bandwith! Oh the withdrawels.....

The ingame interaction isnt as intense as CTW was YET(im not quite as attached emotionally as i was with CTW)....it aint ovea till its ovea...but I still feel like they are doing an excellent job setting up the reality of Metacortechs and it still excites me to think and be more creative.

So for me a good ARG is one that challenges you intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and creatively, thats what CTW did for me and Metacortechs is following suite.

I pray that it comes to a proper conclusion and doesnt tank like other unlucky ARGs in the past have.
Prepare for the withdrawel guys like a junkie from a high youll be jonesin your @$$ off

Thanks again to the PMs and Players alike!!! I have really enjoyed the game!

And do you feel something strange at the back of your neck?
Shocked Shocked

The writing and the character development in the Beast were much better. You actually cared about the characters and solving a puzzle wasn't just an intellectual excercise but a way of finding out what happened next with your favorite character or, sometimes, even helping a character. In short, there was much more emotional investment on the part of the players.

From a community standpoint, the Trail and the Guide for the Beast were always uptodate and were tremendous resources for players old and new. Some people have tried to create Metacortechs resources, but they seem to have run out of gas and are not as detailed or organized as the Beast's Trail and Guide.

Sound like the words of someone who hasn't done any puzzle solving in a while.

Actually you are absolutely right and maybe I should take that back, because it doesn't do justice to all the people that are cracking the nuts... the first two weeks of this ARG I was enjoying my late "summer"-vacation, and I've started work two weeks ago, so I have been missing out on most of the action Smile

Perhaps it would be better to say that I am sometimes disappointed that clues are vague and general instead of really pointing somewhere... it's constantly waiting for the next update to see if are finally shown the connection between events we are all constantly longing for...
