[UPDATE][PUZZLE] She that falls in love with herself...

Right on schedule, we have a new Wednesday At Noon (CST) Post in a new thread entitled She that falls in love with herself will have no rivals in the And Now For Something Completely Different subforum of the Hang Separately forums:

Lyn wrote:
You were certainly quick to find your way out of the forest last week; very impressive! But perhaps I gave you too large a hint; spending so long with the Queen seems to have given me a fairytale sense of noblesse oblige. So let's level the playing field a bit, shall we?

Note that "level the playing field" links to http://www.hangseparately.com/lyn/chess.html which displays three images of chess.

Here we go again!

Are they ALL knights?

It does appear they are all knights...

2 classic white knights
2 classic black knights
2 fancy white knights
2 fancy black knights
1 larger fancy black knight

And the litte arrow in the corner of the board on the first image, right now the thought is that means it's black to move...

I was going to say plot the moves and see if it spells anything ...

And how do you know whose move it is? Knights of the same color are facing both directions. Don't know whose side of the board that is.

For consistency's sake, let's call the lower left corner in the top view A1 and the upper left right corner 8H.

So then the positions are:

White
Classic Knight: C3 and E1
Fancy Knight: E5 and G3

Black
Classic Knight: E3 and E7
Fancy Knight: A6 and G7
Large Fancy Knight: F4

General convention when viewing a board from above is that white is at the bottom and black at the top.

I don't know about the moves spelling anything. Knights can dance around each other forever without being taken...

Re: [UPDATE][PUZZLE] She that falls in love with herself...

Some (probably pointless) observations:

1)
aliendial wrote:

Each knight in each matching pair is facing in a different direction from the other. Some are facing towards each other, and some are facing away; all are facing either up or down, not sideways. The one odd black knight is facing the top of the board.

2)
bwochinski wrote:

The arrow is not visible in angle2.jpg, which means it was added to the picture and is not on the board itself.

3) None of the knights is attacking any other knight. Most of the knights are on black squares; the sole exception is the black knight on A6. As a result, only a handful of the white squares are not under attack: A8, B3, B7, and H7 (plus A6, where that knight is). If that knight moved to C5, it would attack A6, B3, and B7, leaving only A8 and H7 unguarded.

I was hoping all of the attacked squares (or all of the not-attacked squares) would form letters and spell something. It doesn't look like it, though.

Updated the diagram for those who like to see things more iconically. Please check its consistency with the original image.

C = Classic, F = Fancy, B = Big Fancy

For the record, vidstudent made the following observation in chat, but we couldn't find anywhere to go with it...

Quote:
<vidstudent> Black knight at a3->c2
<vidstudent> Black knight at e6->d4
<vidstudent> Black knight at g2->h4
<vidstudent> Last one stays put.
<vidstudent> Thus, all knights are protected, and advance in the directions they face.

We didn't know what then became of the white knights.

I also made the observation that there are several pairs of white & black knights that could capture each other in one move.

Can anyone add some water to these idea seedlings or perhaps have some new crops of their own?

Yeah, but what's the seventh letter in KNIGHT? Mr. Green

I have a feeling we're looking for two words, one of four letters (symbolized by the four white knights) and one of five letters (the black knights). Or, y'know, vice-versa.

I tried using "noblesse oblige"... By using the black pieces left-to-right and "noblesse", I got "sense", but I couldn't get anything meaningful from "oblige" and the white pieces.

SENSELESS didn't work.

Also, this ignores the facing thing, which can't be coincidence.

Agreed. And we also mustn't overlook that arrow in the top right corner...

"He that falls in love with himself will have no rivals" is a quote from Poor Richard's Almanack.

Perhaps... we should make like knights face other?

If you consider only the up-down direction, two of the like knights -- the ones at A6 and G7 -- are already facing each other. The other three pairs are facing away.

Edit: Except for the pair at C3 and E1. As EGo points out on the next page. Because he actually looked at the board before posting. Like a clever person. Bang Head

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see Lyn giving us any hints this week. I think the puzzle is self-contained.
