Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Characters are full-form (traditional) Chinese. Difficult to identify them from the scan, but I've found a few. On the top line, going from the left, I've got

? xiu1 ? chang2 chang2 yun4

The number refers to the tone, and these are the Mandarin pronunciations. Cantonese will be different. Meanings are harder to call, but seem to relate to food and drink.

xiu1: food, meal; eat, offer
chang2: taste, experience; ever
yun4: liquor, spirits, wine; ferment

Useful background websites for identifying the characters:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://www.mandarintools.com/chardict.html

To use this, you've got to understand a little about how Chinese characters are written. The wiki article here gives the background on the writing system and explains the difference between full-form and simplified characters.

The website above uses various input methods to find the characters. In this case, we have to use the radical/stroke input method, described in the wiki here.

Planning to get my cards on Monday, and really hope I pick this one up. It's good timing, as I'm about to do some refresher language training and exam before moving back to Beijing.

Without researching the symbols yet, the first thing that caught my eye is the colors. Are those the same colors as our cards? And, is that lettuce in the background? If this is about food, could it possibly be a recipe of some sort? Confused

**Edit**
On second thought, could this 'food' be poisonous (or spoiled), causing a need to go to a *clinic*?

The thing that stands out to me other than the colours is the fact that the bottom row only has one character(?) on it.... and it looks like its a different colour as well. Maybe this one will be the key in how to interpret what the words mean?

I noticed that as well, but if you look elsewhere, there is another purple where red and blue cross. Also, the way the characters are written, that is the leftmost column.

Hmm,
Looks like the lettuce is cooked...my first thought was kimchee. Taht stuff will make you sick. But isn't that a favorite with koreans? And Koreans and Chinese certainly do not mix.

Just mindless bable. I will have to have a person at work read this out for me. Maybe I can have the answer Tomorrow evening.

From the scan, a great many of the characters appear to be exactly the saem, even across colors, so the colors must have some different meaning other than categorizing the words. Perhaps arranging them in ROYGBVBl order, maybe even in a way similar to the loopy pixels solution, will reveal some of the hidden significance in the card's patterns.

BZ.

I have the kodansha kanji learners dictionary, they're not in there. the top left symbol wasn't on the lookup tool above, so I'm guessing several of them aren't. I think these are complex medical terms or something weird.

My card has two horizontal lines intersecting on the 5th character on the row under the rub off panel. Does anyone else have this?

silver cards appear to have lines like this on them regularly as defects. Mine has one line through the same row.

I was thinking, maybe the colours "group" the symbols together

Thanks Ahdok, I've noticed that most of my wave 4's have similar "defects" it just seemed more deliberate on this card.

Just checked out the solve page for those without the card, the answer we require is two words.

Anyone see the significance of the symbols. They repeat so often that the actual reading of the symbols in any order couldn't mean anything. Perhaps they are just a clue as to how to re-arrange them so that the colours paint a picture "Loopy Pictures" style.

If we re-arranged them in another grid I suspect that they would be 13 x 7 instead of the current arrangement (the only prime factors of 91). I'll go through them tonight and transpose them onto an Excel sheet with English characters for each symbol as they are quite hard to distingush from the scan, some very small differences in symbols. (MC permitting)
