So far I've found
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
St Augustine grass or Buffalo grass x Cinderella weed or Pig grass or Porter bush or Nodeweed
Scorpion's thorn x Mongoloid Dandelion x Adam's needle
Rabbitfoot clover or Hare's foot clover or Stone clover or Pussy clover x Antelope Horns or Antelopehorn milkweed or Trailing milkweed
Dwarf snapdragon x Cocksfoot (grass) or Orchardgrass
Cat Thistle x Mondo grass or Monkey grass or Snakebeard or Japanese snake's beard x (Common/Puple foxglove x Mayapple or Mandrake) x Snake cucumber or melon
I guess we can eliminate the alternatives which don't fit into the theme. However the last one makes it seem unlikely that it's then just a question of combining names. There must be something more clever which I haven't spotted.

good, you saved me time listing this out, now, because i'm guessing you can't truly make hybrid versions of this, this must be the puzzle itsself.

Last night in a Barnsley trattoria the conversation turned to lawns and returfing. I said "I know where you can get great grass in Huddersfield". The whole restaurant showed sudden interest.

Is that third one a Jackelope? (mythical blend of jack rabbit and antelope rumored to be found in Texas; often represented by giant rabbits with horns).And if so...I wonder if one of the others is a chupacabra, and am wondering what other made-up beasts the others might represent.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Yes Jackelope seems right, and it's interesting to read about. Equally interesting is chupacabra which I did read described as a combination of a hairless dog, a kangaroo and a rat.
Manticore is a combination of a scorpion, a lion and a man.
Phoberomys pattersoni, nicknamed goya is an extinct buffalo sized guinea pig.
Anything with cock, whether dwarf or dragon gives lots of interesting possibilities, but a bantam is described as a dwarf cock.
The last one stumps me for the moment.

That'd make the first one a Catoblepas - half buffalo/half pig - then
Last one could be a Nue or Chimera (gotta have a chimera when talking about hybrids!). Basilisk for #4?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Agree that 4 is basilisk or possibly cockatrice. Note that jackelope can also be spelt jackalope. Agree that chimera seems likely although haven't read of one with all 5s characteristices. There seem to be particular chimerae, e.g a chinese one used by the kilin beer co.

Good work so far! I agree that:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1=Catoblepas, half bull with a hog's head;
2=Manticore
3=Jackalope
4=Basilisk is OK but not convinced
5=? Chimera maybe
check out http://bestiary.ca/beasts/beastalphashort.htm for a great reference
it's not
catloblepas
manticore
jacalope
basilisk
chimera

i think the 5th one might be:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
sphinx..
greek sphinx was represented in vase-painting and bas-reliefs most often seated upright rather than recumbent, as a winged lion with a woman's head; or she was a woman with the paws, claws and breasts of a lion, a serpent's tail and birdlike wings which counts for CAT, SNAKE, HUMAN
it seems a more elegant solution than a

IT'S ALSO NOT:
catoblepas
manticore
jackalope or jackelope
basilisk
sphinx
(or subbing cockatrice for basilisk, with jackAlope, and I'm out of turns today)

My advice:

Try to closely match up ramsfan's findings with Wikipedia's descriptions. All the answers have been mentioned.
