(EMAIL) PXC Newsletter 28/07/06

Hi there,

You've scored (x) Perplex Points. That makes you number
(y) on the global leaderboard, out of 38020 players!

This week...

* Wave 4 Released On Monday - 62 New Cards To Collect!

* Firebox dispatching cards for arrival on Monday
* Launch Party @ Borders, Charing Cross, London
* Other Swap Meets in UK & USA
* Ask Mind Candy!
* SF Event
* Site Updates
* Charity auction raises £££
* Story & Leaderboard Updates
* Newsletter puzzle

We're all fantastically excited about the launch of Wave 4 here at Mind
Candy. In Perplex City, meanwhile, our heroes tried to track down the
stolen parts from the Academy, with some help from their friends on Earth.
Their plan met with mixed results - not least of which is Anna going AWOL.
Check the story update towards the end of the newsletter (or listen to our
new podcast at http://story.perplexcity.com/podcast) for more details, but
first...

** WAVE 4 RELEASED ON MONDAY! **

It's what you've all been waiting for - the release of Wave 4 of our
puzzle cards!

62 cards (eight each of red-to-purple, ten each of silver and black)
complete the 256 card deck of Season One, providing another hefty dose
of puzzling goodness to vex and delight. Once again, they range from the
straightforwardly simple to the simply synapse-snapping, covering the
usual diverse gamut of styles.

Cards will be on sale from a number of outlets worldwide, starting from
each store's usual opening hours. However, the unique card codes will
only be uploaded to our website at 5pm GMT - so that's 6pm in the UK,
noon on the USA East Coast, 9am on the West Coast and 3am the following
day for most Australians. (Sorry, Australia.) That way, most people should
be able to have bought their cards before the solve system is up, making it
a bit fairer for everybody.

The cards will be available both in "pure" packs, containing only Wave 4
cards, and also in mixed packs, containing a selection of all 4 waves.
Lots of retailers should be stocking them - the best plan is to look up
your nearest store using the Store Locator, and drop them a line to ask.
Needless to say we've been working flat-out to give all our stockists a
chance to get their Wave 4 cards in time!

** FIREBOX DISPATCHING CARDS FOR DELIVERY ON LAUNCH DAY **

Impatient to get your hands on Wave 4 cards? No time to get to a store?
Well your problems are solved - pre-order your Wave 4 packs from
featured retailer Firebox and they'll dispatch your cards early, timed
to arrive on your doorstep on Monday morning - at least if you're in the
UK, although their overseas shipping is pretty snappy too. Pretty good,
eh?

** SUPER-DUPER MIND CANDY LAUNCH PARTY - LONDON, UK, MONDAY EVENING **

To celebrate the release of Wave 4, and perhaps even the quickening of
the hunt for the Cube, Mind Candy are throwing a party at Borders,
Charing Cross, London, on Monday evening.

Kicking off at 7.30pm, there'll be pure & mixed Wave 4 cards on sale,
games and competitions, plenty of other Perplex City fans and select
members of the Mind Candy enclave hosting proceedings. We hope to have
WiFi there, too, so those of you with laptops can solve cards at the
venue itself. Finally, attendees looking to continue the festivities
will have ample opportunity to relocate to a nearby establishment for
tequila-powered puzzling.

So come one, come all! (It helps if you email
wave4launchSPLATperplexcity.com beforehand, though, so we can estimate
numbers.)

** OTHER LAUNCH EVENTS **

But there are other events happening on Monday too! Behold:

EALING, LONDON, UK

"And So It Begins", a store in Ealing, London, is hosting an all-day
swap meet on Monday where Perplex City players are welcome to buy cards,
hang out, swap theories and trade cards, making it the perfect starter
for those heading to the Mind Candy event later on. It starts at 11am
and continues through the afternoon.

NORWICH, UK

Finding yourself a bit far east for the London event? Never fear, for
there'll be a meet-up between 7pm and 9pm at Progeny Online Internet
Cafe, 159 Magdalen Street, Norwich. Obviously there'll be loads of PC's
to test out your solves - it is an internet cafe, after all.

BANGOR, UK

If, on the the other hand, you find yourself in the wilds of Wales,
you'll be glad to know there's an all-day Perplex City session at Replay
Games, 97 High Street. Huzzah!

Map: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=BT20+5BD

NEWBURY, OHIO, USA

There's another all-day swap meet at Diversions in Newbury, Ohio. It's
at 10643 Kinsman Road, and check the website for details – there's also
a much bigger event planned for Sunday, August 6th, so check
PerplexCity.com for more details on Tuesday...

MIDLOTHIAN, VIRGINIA, USA

And from 3pm - 8pm, there'll be a meet-up at Richmond Comix. RSVP to
richmixSPLATrichmondcomix.com if you're heading that way, and check the map:

And then on *Tuesday*:

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA, USA

Don't worry, you won't need to get the midnight train (sorry, sorry) –
there's a swap meet from 3pm until 8pm at Morningstar Games, at 1545 E.
Montgomery Cross Road.

** ASK MIND CANDY **

We've just started a new feature called Ask Mind Candy! Just send us
your questions on anything you like, from "What's it like working for
Sente?" to "Why is Perplex City so purple?" Then, we'll be answering the
best questions with our customary wit and in funky multimedia format
next Thursday, August 3rd. Put your thinking caps on and fire us off
your pressing questions at the forum thread below:

** REGISTER NOW FOR OUR SAN FRANCISCO EVENT **

There's still some places left at the amazing live event we're running
in San Francisco on August 12th. With an overall capacity of 1000
attendees and a host of exciting, high-tech games planned for the day,
it's not to be missed - especially as it's completely free to take part!
No prior knowledge of Perplex City is necessary, so your friends and
family are welcome to come along too, and if you can't make it to the
event, you can help out online. Either way, make sure you register at:

** SITE UPDATES **

We continue to add yet more goodness to PerplexCity.com. There's now
a card corrections page where you can find all of the changes we've
released for our puzzle cards, and worth checking if you find yourself
stuck. Over at MindCandyPuzzles.com, whizzkids like Javacava have forced
us to make some changes so it doesn't get confused when people manage
to get sub-20-second times! Too fast for your own good, you lot...

** GOING GOING GONE **

The charity auction we mentioned last time around has concluded, with
the exclusive Perplex City artwork finally going for a staggering £521
pounds. Our congratulations and thanks go to both the auctioneers (the
lovely folk behind the Pirates vs Ninjas video) for coming up with the
idea, and the winning bidder for, well, bidding so generously. Proceeds
will be going to the NSPCC's important work.

** STORY UPDATE **

Our conclave of detectives - together with Crypto insider Karen Moro -
devise a plan to track any parts that might be stolen from the Crypto
department. They hack into a network of air quality sensors across the
city, enabling them to trace the radiation from isotope tags they've
placed on suspect items. All goes to plan, until one of the items
disappears off the screen - and when Anna goes to investigate, she
disappears too…

** LEADERBOARD UPDATE - 500K CARDS SOLVED **

It's been a quiet couple of weeks on the leaderboard - with the top
contenders having solved most of the available cards, all that's left is
the sound of puzzlers collectively slamming their heads against their
desks, desperately trying to understand the infernal logic behind
Shuffled. The big news is that we've just broken the 500,000 solves
mark, a majestic milestone if ever there was one, and the 15-million
point barrier was shattered rather recently too. Good work!

Tally continues to top the global leaderboard (all hail her glorious
regime!), anansi69 is clearly using all eight legs to be this week's
best new player with 2117 points, and almagest has surely read more than
thirteen books in order to be the monthly champion, having accrued 9440
points in just 20 days. It's all set to be turned upside-down come next
week, though…

** BONUS NEWSLETTER PUZZLE **

Last time around, we asked you what the following represented:

the other one
the one other
one the other
other the one
the other one
one other the

The answer? "6 of one and half a dozen of the other."

- - - -

In a similar vein, here's this week's brainteaser. What does the
following mean?

O_ER_T_O_

Until next time, Cube Hunters - good luck with Wave 4!

Mind Candy

That's interesting... I earned about 6000 points this week. Hm. I don't really care about a name drop, I'm just wondering who's in charge of watching such things, and how they continue to be employed. Ah well. Laughing

It could be something to do with you getting caught over 1/2 of 2 weeks.
