#158 Worship

In perplex city the brotherhood of the six worship devoutly

30 brothers each attend the daily sunset service 4 times a week . Whilst they are all present on sunday , the numbers present throughout the week varies from day to day

Alan Hobb wanted to learn more about the religion. he knew the brothers were ingreat demand for their knowledge and wisdom but he could only make the friday service. checking the notice board outside the steps he saw the following:

-The brothers attending on monday also go on tuesdays and wednesdays
-Twice as many go on wednesday as on monday.
-The number present on tuesday is the sum of the number on wednesday and thursday,
-Thoses attending on friday or saturdey do not go to the thursday service,
-Half as many go on thursday as on monday
-They don't all go on tuesday

How many brothers would be at the temple for him to talk to?

This is a nice puzzle. Think I've got it, but won't post the answer straight away, as it's really fun to solve. Couple of pointers that might help (apologies if these are unhelpful/overly simple):

Hint 1:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Start by working out the possible options for how many people can go on Monday, then eliminate them one-by-one using the fact that each brother must go four times a week, one of which is Sunday

Hint 2:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
No one who goes on Monday goes on Thursday, Friday or Saturday. The brothers that go on Thursday also go on Tuesday and Wednesday.

ive given out too many answers

i've given out a lot of solves today, and as this one has been given a couple good hints I think I'm just going to give one last hint rather than the full solve. This one isn't very hard at all.

Hint:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The same brothers go on Friday and Saturday. Note I didn't just say the same number of brothers.

That one should about wrap it up for you Smile

Somehow I managed to make that much harder than it actually was, through a bit of dodgy logic, I suppose. Got there in the end, though (just as I was about to destroy something through frustration)! Smile

I've got Monday = X; the info on the card gets me up to 6X+30 attendances (Sunday), but I can't figure out what to do with Friday and Saturday. Just eyeballing it I figure X=10, but if so I kind of have to make a leap of faith about the distribution of the remainder over friday and saturday, but apparently that's right.

well to elaborate my prior hint one step further...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
you know that the same guys go on both friday and saturday. the same exact - no more, no less. You thus know that because of this, everyone attending friday and saturday (who also is already going sunday) must attend exactly once from monday through thursday. This means they can't be going monday because everyone who goes monday also goes tuesday and wednesday.

if you're still having major trouble, this is how i started the problem:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
well, you know that twice as many go on monday as thursday, and twice as many on wednesday as monday. So wednesday = 2*monday = 4*thursday. You know that the highest amount possible is 30, and that tuesday = thursday + wednesday = 5*thursday. This means the highest amount that can be attending on thursday is 5, because then monday is 10 and wednesday is 20. thus, tuesday will be 25. Thursday can't be 6 because this would make tuesday equal 30 and we know that not everyone goes tuesday.

To take it one step further...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Now, we also know that the 10 we have worked out to be going on wednesday are also part of the ten going tuesday and wednesday (it says so in the instructions). Everyone also goes on sunday so these 10 people are taken care of. This leaves us 20 to work with.

On tuesday we have 25, with fifteen who don't attend on monday; wednesday we have 20, 10 who don't attend on monday.

I don't really want to take it any further. Everyone who has PMed me with questions is also beating my ass on the leaderboard, and hasn't contributed to any of the cards I'm still mucking with. I've given out a lot of answers already for free and I thought this card was pretty easy so meh.

If you're all still stuck when I've gotten the last few purples left and maybe a couple of the new blacks then I'll be back with the answer.

In the mean time, you know it's between 0 and 30. Could always divide it up into ten amounts and brute force Smile

Well, I managed to solve this one on my own for once (yay), but came here just to clarify one point that I had to sort of guess to get it right. That is: how do you know that those brothers attending friday and saturday are the same number? I had to assume this was the case for the only way to come to a solid conclusion. The sentence "Those attending on Friday or Saturday do not go to the Thursday service" ... this just doesn't seem to solidify the fact that the same number are going each day. Did I miss something obvious?

Anyway, solved it by knowing this could be the only solution.

Thanks if anyone could clear this up for me,
Best wishes,

John Raven

Help with solution

John et al,

When I started on this card I quickly came to the same conclusions as most of the initial hints offered starting with the monday figures, but I couldn't get the whole Fri/Sat thing as I had some people that could go Fri,Sat,Sun but not any other day and then I realised I was making a false assumption!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
That all the same people that go on Wed go on Tue

Once I straightened that out then the answer falls out without any further assumptions

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There are 10 left over that go on tues, fri, sat, sun and 5 that do wed, fri, sat, sun).

M 10---------
T 10--5-----10
W 10--5--5-----
Th ----5--------
Fri --------5--10
Sat -------5--10
Su 10--5--5--10

Hope that helps.

Michael
