This is very similar to the classic "Hacker 2 : The Doomsday Papers" which has a "maze" with corridors, gaurds, cameras and something to walk with (a robot in this case). First you have to go to 4 places in order to open a vault and then exit via a door. Sound familiar?

Great game btw! Smile.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Did some testing (in excel, got a bit out of hand) and you seem to need at least 240-250 seconds. Doing it safer (depending how you interpret the rules) you need roughly 280 seconds. This is because of the walking period of the upper-right guard being 32 seconds.

PS. @Cabbage: really cool setup!!
PPS. I've included my excel file.

Yes, arnezami, I am in the same ballpark as that, but what you say about rule interpretations is true too. It depends how you interpret variables such as do you have to stand on the grid next to the switch to press it or do you have to move on to the switch to press it; exactly how close can you get at a T junction without being seen till the guard goes past; do you have to go through the door or just reach it etc, etc, etc

Having said that, moving pins around a corkboard wuz a fantastic way to spend a weekend...

Was trying to narrow down which one in the series it could have been.

I must say the board set up is very impressive.

Exactly! You have the same problems I had.

Just trying numbers close to these estimated total times seems to be best way to solve this card I believe. Or: based on a set of interpretations calculating the exact seconds (which practically amounts to almost the same thing).

Yes, yes, and yes to both of you.

I am now however in a quandary as to whether to:

a) completely start again
b) estimate up from my original three tries yesterday
c) estimate down from my original three tries yesterday
e) what happened to d?

Doh! Confused

I'm peering at this one now. The sad thing is, if this was actually in a game I had access to, with the right timings, I'd be able to do it. With a lot of shrieking as guards turned around and there was no box for me to hide under.

I'm assuming you have to be on the grid junction next to a switch to hit it.
Wonder if I could find someone/dig out a copy of rpg maker or something similar and build this in it with the right timings.

I made a stupid flash thing that emulates the rules of this card. Since there's so many variables such as how close to a switch you have to be, whether you're out the door, etc, it gives minimal feedback so you still have to do some thinking.

Here it is.

Yes, it lets you walk into the walls, off the grid, etc etc. I assume you're smart enough not to walk into the walls, so I didn't bother coding the game to stop you.

PS: To "hit a switch" you'd have to push the wait button twice. I couldn't be bothered to code proper switch functionality in.

PPS: What route are you guys all using? I can't seem to get quicker than 309-311 (depending on how strict the rules are), yet I see people here saying they've done it in 280? Also I've tried those as my 3 guesses for tonight.

I am working on a RPGXP version now... should be finished soon .
EDIT 3: A bit more difficult than I thought. Should be finished in the week.

EDIT: Could someone show me what the guards' paths are? IE something like Paint lines drawn on a scan as I'm not really sure where they go.

EDIT 2: Going to use Agent Lex's paths.

I love this puzzle already!

The flash is equally great. I was wondering are we assuming that we can move whilst the guards are turning?

Just open my excel file and change the green block from 0 to 1 to 2 etc until 281. You will see how it works.

It's not stupid at all, it's super. And the bizarre thing is that I got EXACTLY the same answer (that I tried first and already had rejected) doing it using your program that I got manually on my corkboard. So I am guessing that I am maybe either waiting too long or there is an even shorter route.

Hint:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
My route involves a fair bit of waiting and skulking around corners and some backtracking and is well below what you get for your route

Hint:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I worked out the shortest route with no guards around and took it from there

Course I haven't actually solved it yet and could be way off the mark and I don't want to give too much away in case I am really close, but the hints might help you

Cabbage Laughing

Edit: still not solved after tonight's tries. Doh!
