#160 Water Fingerprints

FOLLOWING A NIGHT OF MUDER AND MYSTERY AT... AIKO'S PLACE

<Pictures of Kurt's, Von's, Caine's, Violet's, Tippy's and Anna's fingerprints>

...WE DISCOVERED THAT AN ACTUAL CRIME HAD
BEEN PERPETRATED, THE LAST BOTTLE OF WINE (WHICH
AIKO HAD BEEN SAVING AS A PRIZE FOR THE WINNER) HAD BEEN
SNEAKILY POLISHED OFF BY ONE OF OUR PARTY, EVER PREPARED,
I BROKE OUT THE FINGERPRINTING KIT AND SWIFTLY DUSTED DOWN
THE BOTTLE, FOLLOWED BY AN INKING OF EVERYONE'S WHORLS, LOOPS
AND ARCHES. IN TRUTH, I COULD ONLY FIND A SMALL SECTION OF NON-
SMUDGED PAINT, BUT IT SHOULD BE ENOUGH -

WHO IS THE CULPRIT?

<Picture of a wine bottle saying CHATEAU VUCETICH 231. The bottle also has a fingerprint on it>

To see the print best I found it simplest to catch the reflection of the sun on the card so a band of light crossed over the bottle. The answer to the card is

Actually... you could just use a blacklight or some other UV light. It's really easy to see the details under the blacklight (the fingerprint turns bright orange while the rest of the card remains very dark). Usually the ink you have to 'tilt into the light' is actually UV-responsive light. Blacklights are cheap.

Is that because you suspect he has a drink problem?

I love this card.

Having a brief forensic science background, I feel there should be more cards like this. Perhaps a whole new card game using forensic science techniques involving contact traces - hair colour, paint layers, fibre type as well as fingerprints.

I also think that a card could be made out of handwriting analysis.

I have tried a blacklight without success.

Would appreciate a pointer to where on the bottle I should be looking.

Thanks.

The centre of the fingerprint is to the left of the "231" on the bottle's label. The first time I looked, I couldn't see anything, but I've just gone back and spotted it, and correctly matched it with the naked eye!
