what does "laid out" mean?

I am not sure about what to guess at this point. I am going to wait a few days to submit my answer but I am thinking of going very general with an answer like "washington DC" - which I don't know if I submitted already.

I just don't understand the usage of the phrase "laid out" in the context of the flag (other than if it means where the flag was designed.) To me, laid out means either "planned or arranged or set out" or possibly "prepared for burial". I don't see how that fits with the current location of the flag.

If Washington DC itself is an early symbol of the nation -not a symbol of the revolution [but I don't see any place that specifies that the symbol must be of the revolution]- and as it was "laid out" or planned in a specific way, then perhaps the answer is as simple as Washington DC? That answer would cover the artifacts for sure. Wink

I watched part of the show on Monday and it reinforced to me the idea that overthinking the puzzles or overlooking the obvious is a huge mistake. But I still think that we won't know the correct answer until we get the last bit of the clue and the final artifact.

On an interesting (?) side note when I was in the dentist's office this morning I was glancing through the August 2006 Smithsonian Magazine. The letter to the editor was all about the SSB and how the NMAH was getting a huge make-over that is worthy of its status. I don't recall if the words "symbol" or "treasure" were used exactly.

I've also bounced back forth between the secificity of answering with the NMAH and simply "Washington" DC or "the District of Columbia".

My 2 cents...

The gameboard puzzle is obviously the Mall, a specific part of DC, rather than a generalization of the city itself. I'm a NMAH proponent, but whatever, the answer is likely something associated with the Mall. There are plenty of historical sites in the DC area off the Mall, but the game seems to be directing us to this site for a reason.

Again, just my opinion.

Really, REALLY out on a tangent here: The Mall of America. Hear me out. The blocks make the NATIONAL MALL. NATIONAL, in this sense, is America. Malls, like all buildings, have a "lay out." Not sure how "early" fits in, but the Mall of America is, essentially, a symbol of America's love (for better or for worse) with the free-market system and consumer culture. I'm still going to guess The Smithsonian this week, but just something for the group to chew over.

The flag was removed from display in October 1998 and

Over the years, visitors have seen the flag exhibited in a variety of ways and locations. The National Museum of American History is now designing a dramatic new flag room to display the Star-Spangled Banner. Along with ensuring the long-term preservation of this treasured artifact, the new exhibition will evoke the significance of the flag as a national symbol.

-- Revealing a Side Never Before Photographed --

The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, Behring Center will release a new composite image of the famous flag that inspired the national anthem. It features a side of the Star-Spangled Banner that has never before been photographed and, for the first time, reveals the true condition of the almost 200-year-old flag.

food for thought for those who think "this" flag is THE "national treasure"!

Also-repeating a link shown earlier:

From History Museum To Star-Spangled Shrine

(how many letters do we need??) (Museum of History=15 w/o counting spaces~17 counting the spaces)

(Exactly how many "national treasures" are there)

That fits every clue perfectly. 1st paragraph of the last link you posted. Thus we have the answer

If you are still wondering about the map of Boston-check out this site showing the exact type of map.

You of course can translate the page from French to English.

Also-can anyone remember all the clues given in the play along games.
Either on line or cell phone. There should be at least 7 clues. If listed as given-will that also give a clue.

Actually, I haven't been playing for the 10Gs, although last week I paid someone at PubQuiz to enter (reimbursed his 99 cents for the call). Can try that again tonight if we're in the room with that TV. If we're in the other room, it's all rugby all the time. Sometimes baseball.

Has anyone noticed that the NBC site only has 8 challenges but on the clues obtained there are 9.
