This continues to irritate
have tried various efforts:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
catoblepas (not really sure about this)
manticore (must be right)
jackalope (surely the right creature; spelling?)
basilisk OR cockatrice (no success with either)
sphinx OR chimera (no love with these either)
What isn't right here?

Try to closely match up ramsfan's findings with Wikipedia's descriptions. All the answers have been mentioned.
He has said all the answers have been mentioned in the posts so it is a matter of sorting through all the failed answers. sigh

nue
jackalope
cockatrice
chimera
catoblepas
nue
jackalope
basilisk
sphinx
catoblepas
nue
jackalope
cockatrice
sphinx
still no love. it could be spelling on jackalope or the sphinx /chimera thing

Solved it this morning. Couple hints:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
4 is not Basilisk. And many of you have Nue in the wrong slot.
EDIT: I am a moron who does not know how to close spoiler tags.

ARRGH! I *knew* that, as soon as Miamo posted the hint (thank you!), and I went and found a really nice page on Wiki! Alas, I'm pacing back and forth, waiting to be unlocked!

Big hints, this one is tricky because of one of the creatures (I hadn't really heard of it before)
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I used jackalope.
Chimeras aren't made of enough parts (as was mentioned further up)
Look for a 'relation' of the basilisk.
