Greetings from Perplex City!
Greetings, citizens of Earth. Heh. I've always wanted to say that. Hello there - I'm Von, resident of Perplex City, Earthology geek and general dogsbody here in the puzzle scribe team at Perplex City Academy. I suppose I should explain all that! Perplex City's in a galaxy far far away (although we don't have pod-racing. Boo.), Earthology is the study of Earth - a popular subject here in the city - and the puzzle scribe team creates the puzzles that go on the cards that we're sending over to you guys in the hope that they'll help you find our Cube.
Yes, that's right, we've lost our Cube. Could happen to anyone, happened to us. It's a mystical object: some people worship it, some people venerate it and some people just want to drill it with lasers to see what it's made of. It was stolen in 2004 and we know it's buried somewhere on Earth right now. If you find it, as well as a warm glow of satisfaction you'll also get a $200,000 reward.
There's going to be a big Perplex City live event in San Francisco on Saturday August 12th at the very fine Palace of Fine Arts, which is part of the reason why I'm posting here. Whether you're in San Francisco and want to run around the city in one of the biggest live puzzle events in the world - or you want to take part online - you can sign up for free.
To get everyone in the puzzle-solving mood the nice people at 1UP.com have given me houseroom for the next two weeks. I'll be running a mini puzzle challenge right here on the site. Solve all 10 puzzles (one every weekday) and you'll get a single answer which will give you a head start at the event!

When I was a teenager (which, OK, technically I still am, so I suppose I mean when I was a young teenager) I used to take part in these awesome three-day puzzle quests here in the City. Usually there was some sort of theme, like espionage, or wilderness survival, or prison-break. We had to complete tasks like working out how to rescue a truck from a pool of "quicksand" without stepping in it ourselves, or carrying an "injured" comrade when we only had some pieces of rope and a plank.
I can't promise there'll be any challenges quite that intense in San Francisco (particularly because the team working on it won't show me what they're doing) but we're hoping it'll give you a taste of how much we love puzzles here in the City.
So, without further ado, here's the first puzzle. And because it's a Monday I'm making it an easy one.
What do you get if you multiply X by L?
I already messaged him with my first attempt at a solution. I don't even know if theres some sort of reward at all, but why not eh?

On the left hand side of his blog page where it says he is from, anyone know what the OU stands for?
I may have missed or found something.

I take it we are assuming this is legit? Not that I am wanting to cast doubt but it would be pretty easy to have someone create the site using the standard graphics available off the MC sites and the get everyone to send in puzzle solutions. T'would be a good way of trawling for e-mails for a spammer...?

The answer for Von's Quiz is
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
D (He's using Roman Numerals! 10 (X) multiplied by 50 (L) equals 500 (D))
Edited to apply spoiler tags. -Cass

Wanna spoilerise that answer up there, Mr Simon?
Yay, Von! He's like a sort of geek seed that's going to sprout into a fully-grown geek any day now. Bless.

Anyone know what the answer is to the second day?
Or at least hints? I am stuck and I have been thinking about it for hours now.
