"Fools Mate" in which 'mate' occurs on White's 4th move, or the 7th move of the game

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I think you mean Scholar's Mate. Fool's Mate is checkmate on black's second turn - the fourth move of the game.

Different people may use different terminology. The mate on Black's second move, whilst possible really requires colusion between the players.
You have to be foolish to fall for the seven move one as well.
Do others use this terminology?

Yep, looks like they do.

An article here: http://www.oscf.org/oscf.jsp?panel=content/readArticle.jsp&ArticleID=271
Actually uses both names for the same game. And points out that it is a foolish mate, as, if it fails, it leaves pieces badly positioned

Congratulations Austin!

Was it straightforward or was there some kind of deeper underlying answer here? Did you require the names of the openings?

Yes, no and yes (one of them has another name)

Austin.

It's not the first time they've been confused, but I can assure you the Scholar's Mate is the one that you were referring to. I noticed you referenced a wiki article and an opinion piece. Maybe you should try a book or a more trusted internet source such as Encarta or chesscentral's dictionary or chess corner.

I've found the correct name for one of the openings. Now to find a chess board thing online to do it.

I'm not entirely sure about the "to what purpose". Because there is only one purpose in chess.

Huzzah! A respectable fourth. Smile

Hint here:

The answer is a single word that answers the posed question in agreeably poetic fashion...

Tried the first two words that came to mind (capture and victory). Hmm. Any more helpful hints? Very Happy

could I get a hint as to which opening needs changing? I have found variations on almost all of them as some are called by other names depending on actual usage. Could it be the one with Kf3?

Good grief, why don't you give me your pxc login, password, and card code... I think it'd be a lot easier on all of us.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Red = Reti - Santasiere's Folly (A06)
Dark Purple = English - Orang-Utan Variation??? (A15)

Sorry for being so harsh, but I think you might have a better experience if you give it some thought, do a little research, broaden your horizons, learn something new. Maybe give a card a couple days (lock it out a few times - it won't kill you) before you start begging for hint after hint.
