Bendover, your logic is irrefutable. Laughing

What we're still not sure about is why 254 / 253 was not accepted...

I'm definetely sure the answer is more than 256 though as well as i have entered everything below that (and including) and had it rejected.

BUT, this would not be the first time I had the correct answer for a card rejected for no know reason

here is all the numbers I have entered
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
254 255 256 257 258 259 260 261 262 263 264 265
I have followed all the paths that have been posted and unless the guards have super vision 254 seems about the right mix of daring and safety

Just to let you know if it helps anyone that I have tried, in vain:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
250, 252, 253, 254, 255, 256, 280, 282, 284, 286, 298, 300

But to no avail... There was some method in it, but my logic is clearly failing me... Getting desperate now!

Also just failed miserably with:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
251, 266, 267

My failed attempts are totting up as I am locked out yet again - looks like I'll be bald by tomorrow considering the rate at which I am pulling out my hair!

Finally solved!

I can see what's wrong with previous attempts, the rules on the card aren't clear enough and can be taken many ways.

However, from what I can tell...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
You don't have to be standing on a button to press it, being next to it for two seconds activates the button. Hope this clears it up for some of you.

Thats the premise that I had been working with and not getting the right answer, so I changed it to standing on the button which didn't work either.

Its going to be something that is not explicity explained, like the guard has to be at least one full square away from you or if the torch is pointing in your direction you can still be seen if you are not in the actually torchlight.

However this would mean the distance to the first button is more than 36 in those cases. (although I can (i believe) legitimately do it in 35 easily)

In my accepted solution, distance to the first button was

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
33 seconds, and 35 after the button had been pressed

Yes I agree with the rule interpretation bit, but I don't think it is possible to complete the puzzle without standing at some point in a corridor with one of the guards facing in your direction (even if they're a long way away).

Please explain exactly what is wrong with previous attempts, then I can sleep at night.

PS In my solution I did what you said within your spoiler with regards to the switches.

From what I'm guessing, and it's still an 'interpretation of the rules' issue, is that people who've got lower times have tried to take the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
right-hand path
from the start, i.e.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
sneak past the camera
and the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
grey guard.
From what I remember, this is what I did when I kept getting my
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
254
score.

However, I'm guessing, MC don't allow this because you can't get past the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
grey guard - when you reach the top-right of his path, his line of sight is 3 behind you. When you move one up from there, his line of sight is just one behind you. He still cannot see you, but if you try going a further square up he
may just clip you via the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"I can only be sure I'm outta sight when I reach the next square"
rule. Try it on a sim and see what I mean.

I hope that makes sense... not too sure myself. I'd have made a crappy little diagram, except my Paint program has some type of error Rolling Eyes

Thanks for the explanation twixwolf but my solution involved taking the left hand path and avoiding all the torches at all times. I didn't go near the camera either... You can download it from page 3.

I guess I'll just have to wait for MC to get back to me

Yeah I take the left hand path as I have assumed that you cannot get past that particular guard, I was also very dubious about the sneak past camera as well.

For some reason today I have just spewed out another number after coming back afresh to it which I have not had before. So I am not sure what the results will be when I try it but I shall give it a shot. Very Happy

Well, got there in the end after much prompting from cabbage, Bless you dude Very Happy Very Happy

But really the answer is awkward and clumsy in my opinion Sad Time for something more clear cut now I think, Maybe Riemann or 13th Labour LOL Laughing Laughing
