I've made a start on a website to help with this card, but I need some help in doing some decent translations to as many other languages as possible.

I'll PM you with the French translation for all the strings you listed later today.

The best way to try to avoid spam filters; is to have an opt out option clearly labelled at the bottom of the email. You'll need to set up a new email address for this, i.e optout@...... then we should bypass some of the filters. Plus another thing that would help is to send it to everyone of us and if it lands in our junk mail box we declare it safe; the more people who declare it safe the more filters we bypass. Hope thats some help! Smile
PS bad grammer hence the edit! Embarassed

Certainly does! Thanks - I've just added an opt-out system and added a line to the bottom of the emails. Smile

We've been discussing a referral based system over in #satoshi

Basically we want people to input their email address and rough location (e.g england) we then give them a referral id to give out to people. The people they show put in their details and als get a referal id and soon and sofourth.

If we're clever with this we could track referrals to see the proccess branching out. So we'd see that a few people have sent it to a few people at the start, and after a few links we should see a whole chain of branches etc.

Location would also help us on the marketing front, and help us see if any of our emails are hitting china/japan.

This shouldn't be too hard to implement.

Just started a rough translation of the e-mail, and wonder if we need to change the text a bit.

Quote:
Please check out this photo
Dear @@TOEMAIL@@,

Your friend @@FROMEMAIL@@ asks if you could take a look at the photo on http://www.billion2one.org/?r=@@REF@@&lang=@@LANG@@ to see if you recognise someone.

Best regards,
The B2one Team

leaving aside who Toemail is Smile , if I received this, I would be very wary about checking out that website. But then I'm a suspicious so-and-so.

Maybe we could add another few lines to the e-mail like:

"We're trying to contact this guy as he has an answer to a problem that will help us find a priceless artifact. Well, one worth £100, 000 to the finder. So we've set up this website to help track him down. We hope you can help, either by identifying him, or passing on this e-mail to your friends who might.

If you feel it has been a waste of your time reading this, then we're very sorry to have intruded. Have a great day."

Makes it a bit longer, I know, but maybe softens it?

I agree and I've added it to the English version. I'll leave it up to the translators how they write the emails for whichever language they're working on Smile

P.S. Referral tracking is now in place (I'll make a reporting interface later.) Country is determined by IP Geolocation... (according to the T&C of the service I must state
"This product includes GeoLite data created by MaxMind, available from http://www.maxmind.com/" every time I mention I use IP geolocation. Razz

French translation is now live thanks to Thomas Bookmore!

Edit: German translation done! (Thanks GuyIncognito)

I can't deny I think we're on the right lines here - sending this image out to everyone we know, and try to get them to pass it on, with a contact address to respond to. I think the website is great, and need to get this advertised. But to be honest, if I received an email like this I would delete it without clicking on the link. I've worked with computers / networks for too long, and my advice to all my users is to delete these kind of messages no matter who they are from, because there are too many bad people / programs in the world. However, apart from issuing UnFictioners a script to bang out to all of their contacts, rather than sending out from an unknown email address, I can't think of another way at present.

There's no way that we actually email the picture around, because it would be too large a message, so a link to the website would be the best bet. Alternatively (or as well), other options such as a national press campaign, or a 'missing person' picture on milk cartons could spread the word? I know this would only be national not international exposure, but I think people would be more comfortable clicking on a link to a British national newspaper website, for example.

A friend of a friend (only 2 levels of separation!) worked for a big paper, so I'll see if she still has any contacts..... I'll let you know if I get anywhere.

Mico, I think that that's probably true and a good point, but, at this point it seems, this getting around is only by people sending it to other people that they know. It's not like we're gonna get a list of every email adress in the world like those Nigerian spammers and send it all at once.

Plus, I don't think that email should be the only way of sending this around. There should other stuff like forums or Myspace or whatever.

i emailed Fiona at MC to ask if we could get an original pic so we can have a high quality image rather than a scan.

I can add a link to the 13th site and i am sure MJ will add it to the community bar too. I have a mailing list of 300 13th labour guys and will add details to the next newsletter (which will be sent out after SF) and can also pimp it on the 13th labour LJ

anything else I can think of I will let you know.

Will be signing off for a few days now and heading off to SF Smile

see you in game....

Mico, I agree - email should only be one of many methods we use (but it's a good start, as even if a small percentage of emails get through, the numbers will be much larger than other forms of communication.) Plus it's cheap too! Very Happy

I've found another relevant 1 Billion figure; the estimated population of the Internet as of late 2005.

So, like posted before, it couldn´t be that guy?

Satoshi Tomioka from Delaware / Uni Tübingen

http://www.ling.udel.edu/ling/index.php?option=com_mambatstaff&Itemid=36&func=fullview&staffid=17&mode=list

He wrote a book named "A sloppy identity puzzle" and landscape on following page is similar.

I tried emailing him - no reply as of yet though.

I'll be disappointed if it is him, a bit too easy for the supposedly most difficult card. Smile
