That reminds me actually, can anyone look to see if there is meta data attached to the image like what camera it was taken with etc. and maybe a date?

First thing I did when I got the image Smile Unfortunately there aint anything (other than MC seems to strip out all the EXIF data from their images using Photoshop CS on a Mac!) Sad

I checked the Fortean Times forums, and couldn't find any sign that someone had already posted there, so I've put a message up now.

I heard back from the University of Mass. and here's what they wrote:

appreciate some sort of citation is possible. The full paper can be

I read through some of the pages, but some of it went wayyy over my head. But this looks promising. Maybe we can get this algorithm running of or Billion2one.org or something. I'm no programer, but hey maybe this can work? Maybe someone can explain this to me in a little... simpler terms.

The full image shows what I think is Mr X's bag. First of all I thought it was someone standing just behind him (close enough that it was probably someone he knew) as there's no sign of him wearing anything above his coat (straps etc.)

However if it was someone he knew it'd be odd that he'd be taking a self-portrait (knowing how tricky it is to get a well framed shot). Why not ask his pal?

It doesn't look like a bag to me either, but another person. Could it be that the original photo was a self-snapped one that had both Satoshi and his mate in, but it has been cropped for the purposes of this card. It's hard enough to take a picture of yourself, but portrait style is even harder. So I wonder if this was a landscape that has been cropped: is 548*748 pixels an odd size for a digital snap?

One thing perplexes me about the friend idea:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
He is taking the photo with his arm on the right and the friend is also on the right. wouldn't this end up with a giant arm in the middle of the picture. Surely he would have used his other hand? Or perhaps he likes using that arm/best angle etc... Or am I just looking inot this too much?

I've just made an idiot of myself by miming taking a self-portrait with a cigarette packet. It's much more comfortable to hold the Marlboro Canon in the left hand, given where the shutter button would be, as you can rest the camera on the index finger, rather than the ball of your thumb.

From the angle of his arm, it looks to me like the photo originally included his friend entirely.

I think that's entirely dependent on the person and/or the camera. You'd think it would be easier for me to take a picture of myself with my left hand. My camera has the shutter button on the same side as yours, it would seem, but every time I have taken a picture of myself, it's always with my right hand. I'm right handed, and it feels easiest to use that arm. My camera is small enough that it really doesn't make it any more difficult to take a photo with the left versus right, plus I think that all of my self-portraits are "portrait" (more tall than wide) versus "landscape" (more wide than tall), placing the shutter button at the bottom of the camera.

Has anyone tried to research the architecture? It's not classic Tudor/Tudorbethan, where the wooden bits are generally pretty symmetrical. The building in the background seems to have some randomness I find very un-tudor-like. I looked around the intarweb for tudor-like and general styles and did not get anywhere. Also looked for japanese rice warehouses (mentioned by a kind japanese person and quoted somewhere higher in this thread) and could find nothing like that at all. Any ideas?

Look at the building on the righthand side. Can you see part of the plaster coming off? (Just by his shoulder) You can see that the structure of the building is bricks. Due to possibilities of earthquakes, it is highly unlikely that anybody would build a brick house in Japan. In recent days, Japanese people do build European style houses, but structure is usully steel or wood, although they may use some bricks to make them look like European. But having the brickwork plastered will ruin the main objective to make them look European. Also, this house looks rather old. Judging from these facts, I am 99% sure that the photograph was NOT taken in Japan.

It looks like a willow. Willow and alder tend to enjoy growing near moving water, but it can't be alder as there are no cones visible. Oaks tend not to grow near moving water.

Also his scarf looks 'Top Man' retail style from the mid-nineties to me! Smile
