LINK RESTORED!

http://emergency.perplexcity.com/main/summary.html

The Day's Events

On Thursday 10th August, our only data link to Perplex City was cut by a group known as 'The Third Power'. They did this by launching simultaneous physical and online attacks against our systems in London, which we were unable to repair.

Our only hope was to activate the new link planned for San Francisco. This backup link became our sole chance of connecting with Perplex City. What's more, the carrier wave between the two worlds was weakening rapidly, meaning that the connection had to be re-established before 3.30pm (PDT) on August 12th 2006.

Thanks to the efforts of hundreds of Cube Hunters online and in San Francisco, this was achieved.

On reconnecting with PXC, we received a message from Sente Kiteway, Master of the Academy. The news was not good. It seemed that the Third Power had managed to build some kind of portal, enabling them to transport physical matter - people - to Earth.

Sente's Message

People of Earth: Hello.

My name is Sente Kiteway, and IÕm the Master of the Perplex City Academy. Congratulations on your achievement in establishing the data link. Once again, your intelligence and sharpness has surpassed all expectations. Well done.

As you may have noticed, the link between our worlds has been disrupted for the past few days. This was immediately a cause of grave concern. But our fears have deepened since discovering the cause of the interference.

Two days ago, an energy surge occurred here in Perplex City, blacking out many city blocks. When power was restored, we found that the surge had briefly created a wormhole, originating here and terminating somewhere in North America.

That surge of power broke the original data link between us. We have no idea who caused it, but in the absence of a culprit, we can only assume that their intentions are hostile.

The game has changed. From this point on, I advise you all to stay alert. There is a new player on the board.

[Interference begins, the signal deteriorating to nothing throughout the next paragraph]

I will endeavour to keep you up to date with developments and discoveries here. For your part, I hope you will redouble your efforts to find the Cube. I sense that time is running short, but I continue to have every confidence in your abilities...

At that moment, a Third Power agent called the mobile phones of the Cube Hunters and gave them a warning: briefly, stay away from the Cube, or else.

To emphasize the seriousness of the threat, the agent (and his accomplices) swooped over the crowd of Cube Hunters in a pair of helicopters.

One of the Cube Hunters managed to record both of the Third Power's messages and we provide them here for you: the first message and the second message.

The game has changed. The hunt for the Cube is now a race. Be vigilant, and be quick.

For those that missed it, the last half hour online was truly frantic: we made it to 100% with about 2 minutes left. (By my cross-checking it appeared to be 1 question solved = 1%.)

Based on the progress bar for the ground group (I don't know how real-time it was) they hit 100% with about 30 seconds left to go. I eagerly await the personal narratives for more on what exactly happened.

I dunno - I had the impression that we were jumped to 100% as another pity deal. There were still a good few questions unsolved even when online progress was listed at 100%.

Regardless - brilliant fun, and I even answered a (single) question before anyone else. Wink

Oh - question to the people who were present at the event - did someone actually record the phone messages, or has that just been said for convenience? Wouldn't doubt it if they hadn't been on the official site, and all, but..

I get the feeling they never expected us to solve every last one of them, so 100% was lower than having done all of them.

At least, that's my way of rationalising it.

They were just pulling puzzles randomly out of a stock for each wave. We didn't even see all the puzzles (multiple people reported a message that there weren't enough hits for the next wave).

Hence, unless we got extra-lucky on the random picks, it would have been impossible to solve all the puzzles.

The end went ->98->99->100, not straight to 100. There was a bit of a jump at one point earlier, but that is when the 'unsolved puzzles' page went up and everyone had an easier time zooming in on what to solve.

the jump was from like 91-97, it was the ground team that made the huge jump from the 80's to very well into the 90% range.

deffinately a fun one, especially the last half hour or so.

Ahh, 'kay - see, as far as I saw it went from 97% to 100% without passing through. Evidently I just missed it, though. Smile

Just returned from the event, and I have to say, what fun! For those who weren't there, in the middle of recieving Sente's message, just about every cell phone in the room began to ring at the exact same time. When the message told us to look out side, there was a mad rush out of the auditorium to catch the helicopters (for a moment we thought we were supposed to look at a limo, until we realized it was there for a nearby wedding... whoops!). I'm sure we weirded out some of the tourists checking out the Palace of Fine Arts, but racing across the city and solving puzzles all day was a great way to get out, see the city, and put a little excitement in the day!

Congrats to everyone involved!

lol, it did hit 98 and 99, the last few minutes i realized i was far too frustrated to solve anymore and just kept refreshing the project page. the ground team did make the miraculous jump from 97 to 100 though i think.

We moved up quickly at the end because everyone was trying to get their answers in before the deadline.

The event was pretty fun. I too noticed the quick jump, and agree with you that say that it was suspicious. And, i believe that we should have searched the wedding party. They might have been 3rd power agents!
Those helicopters are everywhere!

Here are the phone messages, recorded by someone else.

I have a quick question. During the transmission, this number was on the screen.

-29284.107181

Can anyone see anything there?

Also, i think the method of the games today was a little flawed. We didn't have any competetion, or any prizes. Just solving, which is fun, but i think there was less of a drive to "win". But, that's just my $0.02.

I thought the off line group finished at ~92%, but still enough to activate the link

I just want to say the live event was great, and it was nice to meet a lot of the players and Mind Candy folks. I second that it was very cool when all of our cell phones rang followed by the mad rush outside. Perhaps we should have gotten into the limo and told the driver to follow the copters!

It was particularly weird to them. Some people elease doves at the end of their weddings; those poor people got a release of nerds instead. Smile

As we understood it, we would still have time to enter our answers if we came back before 3:30. But that wasn't the case, so some of our right answers were not counted in the big tally. Specifically, we were later told that we were the only team to solve 47469. We were bummed that we didn't get to share that for the effort.
