I tried:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
'ginkgo biloba' and
'living fossil' b/c ginkgo is a living fossil (which would be 'very hard')
but no luck... guess I need more of a hint... tho I'm afraid there will be 10 solves before I get home from work tomorrow.... sigh..

I understand the clue perfectly, however, how to word it...need clarification.
from hint:

hard/smell would equal rock/aroma or inhale? Or do I need to actually put in the "clinical name"?

 		hmmm,

I was working along the lines of some sort of alcohol related disorder and sound. Something like Kidney stones but I don't get how that last hint would fit it.
