Darnitall... I know what it is but won't have the code until I get home from work! Thanks to all for hints/clues, esp edzepp.

The following does not contain the answer but a conjecture about how we were supposed to interpret the card:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Perhaps it was not Ishi that was spelled on the card, but instead the first letter was a '1' (one) so we were supposed to look at shi1, which definitely applies...
Thoughts?

Also I've found two ways of spelling it... I only have one guess left for today, so I hope I guess the right one! Shocked

The answer is actually very logical:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Read the last line of the poem. Then think about what you've read.

Dangit! I knew we should look for an 'explanation' for that poem... I had read it even before someone posted a link to it on the forum.. then I got distracted and never really thought about it anymore. Oh well... c'est la vie... makes perfect sense now. All in all, a very cool puzzle.

I think jazzychad is on the right lines.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The first character of the answer (in Mandarin) is shi1

Not sure about the second character though. I think there may be a link to the missing strokes, but it's not perfect.

AT LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAST!!!!

As I was locked out late last night, I had to wait until now (1:17am) to be able to answer. It was a long long wait.

The person who lead us to answer the question
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
doesn't seem to have answered it yet. He/she probably has been locked out and waiting, too. Or if he doesn't realise it, then that is tragic.

I think I figured out the actual chinese word.

The first charactor is
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
jiang - this charactor contains 1 man, 2 paddyfields, 3 "one"s - Well, don't take it as a clue. It might make your search more difficult unless you know chinese charactors well

The second charactor is
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
shi, as we all now know

I thougt the plant in the background was a type of adiantum. I remember I used to have it long time ago. I was going to pop into a garden centre today, but it is no longer necessary. Very Happy

I think the card background illustrates the transition from floppy vibrant vegetation to rigid deadwood...

What do you call a funeral parlour in Latvia?

Thought I'd added this as an edit to yesterday's post but it doesn't seem to have worked. Sorry if I've missed it and am duplicating.

Could the background be a BIG clue and we are missing it.

I am thinking about SKIN, like the layers of skin, from new living tissue, to dead epethilios (I know the word but cant spell it)

So something to do with skin conditions could be the answer.

I AM LOCKED OUT NOW (CRIES)

If this is correct and you get 1st solve you owe me! Wink

Tried- sweat rash, dry skin... TO NO AVAIL!
