Spoiler (Rollover to View):

The name of the person required does not have any hyphens or apostrape's or anything but letters.
He is male.
All you need is his first name and all the information you need to find him is mentioned in these pages.
The answer is a very famous person (I bet you have heard of him before you started your research on this card), not any of his friends or parents or aunties.
He was a French mathematician and physicist.
There are less than 7 letters in his first name.
If I told you any more i would be telling you the answer.
Somebody stop me Laughing

No because his first name has 7 letters, which breaks my spoiler rule.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
On the Eiffel Tower wiki entry his whole name is listed differently to his personal page on the wiki. I can see how that could be confusing.

Thanks. If only I hadn't tried Pierre Laplace as soon as I got home. Locked out for 17 hours, but at least I know the answer.

Now that the answer is pretty obvious for all to see, can someone give a clue on how to decode the puzzle?

I also don't understand how we got to this answer. If I'm following right...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Von's clue "Resist Guessing" suggested a scientist and probability mathematician

...and from there everyone guessed appropriate names.

It seems like a badly designed puzzle to me if the diagram contributes nothing to the solution Evil or Very Mad Can anyone explain?

Peter

Yeah, some of the incorrect guesses seem to be a better fit for the card than the correct one! The problem was there were so many ways to interpret the circuit diagram and no clue to when you were interpreting it the intended way.

I guess we're just missing something to do with the numbers. Smile

ooh, very close. laplace transform would have been my next hint

here's the answer, so don't click unless you really want to know

After looking back on this card here is a short list on what I think are the 3 key points on how to decode this puzzle:

1) Von's Clue of 'Resist Guessing' could be considered as what type of circuit we are supposed to be looking at.

2) Card Shows various circuits all with the Ohm symbol (Ω) which is the SI unit of electrical resistance.

3) Going on from the second a little looking up on Ohm's Law brought out this paragraph from the Wiki

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
What is known today as Ohm's law was proposed by the physicist Georg Simon Ohm. In 1826 he gave a mathematical description of conduction in circuits based on Fourier's study of heat conduction.

That therefore led me to the answer.

I think the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Circuit theory
angle is the more convincing one - hence all the different circuits on the card. A bit obscure and not one of my favourite cards but better than Broadside.

Now back to Shuffled.
