Tamatebako

From the Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamatebako

An Origami cube related link to a Satoshi:
"The Tamatebako is an Origami model featured in a Japanese folk tale. It is a modular cube design that can be opened from any side. If the more than one face of the model is opened, the cube falls apart and cannot easily be reconstructed. The model, and the directions for creating it, had been lost for centuries and only recently rediscovered.

Drawings from a three volume set of wood carvings, "Ranma-Zushiki" (Ranma Sketches) published in 1743 by Hayato Ohoka, featured a colored origami cube. In 1993, Yasuo Koyanagi identified the cube as the Tamatebako, and the model was published in the book "Koten-ni-miri-origami" by Satoshi Tagaki

Cannot find a picture of Satoshi Tagaki, but as the book was published in 1993 probably not our Satoshi. But then again could be.

And an interesting Wiki article for cube lovers nonetheless...

Cabbage

PS Have regularly been checking that 3q2u website where they posted our Satoshi picture and a link to the billion2one site, but no-one has posted any comments about the picture (oh, except me, that is)... Crying or Very sad

I know, due to the DPA. I have linked them to the sites with the search so they can see its 'legit' and we will find him.

I think that we should break into the US's most wanted list and stick his piccy in there.

But with the US's SECURITY SERVICES utter stupidity, they probally wouldnt even find him then!!!!

I asked my trainee. She said that Freiburg doesn't particularly get Japanese tourists, but there's quite an international crowd of postgrads. She went on the uni website and found that Satoshi Tadokoro had published an article on humanoid robots while studying there, and that that was quite a research interest of the uni. Also there was a humanoid robot world cup in germany this summer and a team from osaka had won. Sadly it doesn't look anything like him and his name isn't the answer. I will forward the picture to a friend with a robotics company who went to last year's nagoya expo. You never know.
She also pointed out the proximity of the European Parliament in Strassbourg, which will attract Japanese delegates. Don't know if anyone has a way in there. This is assuming he isn't just Adrian Hon's best friend and the two of them took cheap flights for the weekend just to set an impossible question.

A friend of a friend

I had a friend post a pic of this card at work to see if anyone knew the place, someone says they've been there.

She says the place is Augsburg, Austria. The half timber building is called the "Schlayautski Hotel". "Schlayautski" has no hits on google which leads me to believe it's a misspelling.

If anyone can confirm this location (I don't have the card personally) can you drop me a line at donksSPLATshaw.ca? If it leads you to the cube I expect a cut Razz

Now we have 2 possible places the background of the card could be? Doesn't seem very fitting when we have most certainly found 3 different pictures depicting the exact scenery of where our man was standing.

However, I won't completely discredit Augsburg. We just need more proof.

Just to clarify, I think we're certain that the picture is of the river weiss in Kaysersberg, Alsace. As that isn't the answer, we're trying to find sources of info about his second name, which include a local but now closed Japanese college, which has reunions and an old boys' (and girls?) club, Japanese firms with local branches, tourist info, and the nearby german town of frieburg which is twinned with a japanese town.

I don't think it's Kaysersberg

There's several things in this picture http://static.flickr.com/67/211722844_274092449b_o.jpg
that aren't right.
The building in the foreground is missing several half timber crosshatches, which are part of the wall and couldn't "fall off" or something.
Given the angle the photo was taken it looks like He'd have been standing in the river to get his picture taken there.
The layers of trees behind the house with the red chimney suggest a large hill or mountain very much closer than the one on the PXC card picture, or at least that there'd have to have been a lot of trees cut down between the taking of the Kaysersberg pic and the PXC pic.
The roof of the house with the white chimney looks off as well, the house looks too narrow and the style of roof is different.

I just don't think it's the same place. It's definitely similar, but there are many similar old European villages.

Hi Hawkeblu

Have you seen ixalon's excellent comparative work here:

It is very convincing to me.

Hi Hawkeblu, I still think it's Kaysersberg, there are just too many similarities (even same two conspicuous trees on the hillside in the background).

What looks like the extra diagonal beams of the building on the card is actually a branch of the tree - that one fooled me too but it's clearer on the better quality photo:

If this is a test of six degrees, as we think it is, then that's almost certainly exactly what *did* happen.

Think of it this way:
Seasonal.

What is lush and green in the background for one photo is barren in another. That's the difference between fall/winter and spring/summer.

Bushes grow, building's have maintenance done on them, a view of one picture is taken on the left side of the bridge, one in the middle, one underneath....

Perception is the key.

I can't find an augsburg in austria, either on the net or in my european road atlas. There's an augsburg in germany. It's a medium sized town in Bavaria. I've listed its hotels and can't find anything like schlayautski.

So who wants to fly out to Kaysersberg? I bet that's where the Cube is buried. Smile
