Because maybe "Find Me" is talking about the CUBE, not the man. I bet that some of the Mind Candy guys flew over to Frankfurt, took a train to Karlsruhe, then over to Strasbourg, then down to Kaysersberg and buried the Cube in the ground under that bridge last summer... waiting for someone to go over and dig it up.

I was just in Strasbourg last month. If I had known about this game then I totally would have taken the 30 minute train ride down to Kaysersberg and had a look around. Oh well!

Ok I'm defeated

Yeah..I think you all won me over now Smile

Anyone have access to the German Census? There can't be too many Satoshi's in there.

We could also look for Japanese sister cities, there seem to be a number of German cities with them.

Hi guys - have a few updates to make to the site and I'll *try* and get them done this weekend. I'm in Paris until Tuesday though... I'm one of the 16 Sony Ericsson Da Vinci Code Trial finalists. Primary goal: winning the around-the-world trip. Secondary goal: Spreading Satoshi's photo! Razz

Hello All!

I have lurked on the unfiction forums many times, but this is the first time that I have posted anything. I was late in starting the game so there was no reason to post as most of the puzzles were solved before I joined.

That being said, I wanted to let you know that I have sent a message to a 22 year old Japanese man who lived three years in Kaysersberg (and he also lived in the UK!) to see if he or any of his friends recognized the photo. I provided links to Perplex City, the Card and the Billion to One web site. I hope he responds or sends the links forward. BTW, I found him on MySpace.

Before I sign-off for the evening I want to give a special "hello" to Aliendial. We met at the San Francisco Connection and I do hope we meet again. Maybe the next US Connection will be in DC? I do need to visit DC again!

For me, the clincher is the piece of wall highlighted in red below - same patches?

Taking this idea and running with it, could we date the Satoshi photo according to maintenance work done on the building in the background? At first I wasn't sure anything had changed, but there's an "oddity", as outlined in green below - on the right hand photo, it looks like there's a window or hatch or something to the left of the top-right window, but in the left hand photo it looks like you can see through where that hatch should be, to the building behind it.

In fact, now I look at it, has the building to the left of that hatch (in the right hand photo), been built recently? It doesn't even seem to be there on the left hand (Satoshi) photo. I can't work out which roof is the one behind Satoshi's head, but it certainly looks, from the right photo, that there should be at least 3 there...

In terms of dating, there was talk of this being taken on a digital camera, but I don't think that's necessarily the case - could just be a scan.

Secondly, is there any way to get hold of more information on what building work has been done in the area? Other than going there and interrogating the locals? Smile

[Edit] After looking at ixalon's comparison and one of the images by itself, the roofs do indeed match up - perspective was playing tricks on me. Comparing the angles on all 3 of these images though (the 2 above and the one just linked), I still reckon there's a window missing on the Satoshi pic. You can see it on the 2 other images, which look like they've been taken either side of the Satoshi one...

Don't think so

I have to strongly disagree with the conclusion it's Kaysersberg. I know the buildings are strikingly similar, but that's not the only indicator (besides, there are discrepancies that some are hypothesizing as 'updates' to the buildings, that I think added with other problems really make the Kaysersberg choice extremely unlikely).

My proof: foliage. (Please refer to ixalon's post for comparison)

First take a look at the foliage around the creek. In Kaysersberg there are some ferns, ivy, and bushy flowers (sort of like white lilacs). Those are likely to grow in a wet climate...possibly maritime. Now look at Satoshi; it's a dry climate (reedy bushes, and grasses...no moss and ferns).

Second (and much more important I think), look at the hill in the backround. In Kaysersberg there is a very lush and dense deciduous forest. Again, indicating a wet clime. Contrast to Satoshi, which is a mostly bare hill/mountain with some evergreens. This looks like the top of a mountain to me (reminds me a lot of the northern Rocky Mountains in North America). The growth again says to me an arid climate with harsh winters (i.e. enough snow melt to feed hearty plants, but not the kinds that are growing in Kaysersberg).

Finally, the camera angle and a Tree. In the Satoshi pic, there is a tree growing so that some of it's branches cover the nearest house on the right (without leaves). In K-ville, there is no tree, even though it's at a better angle to see it (in fact the building seems covered in Ivy). I could definitely consider the possibility of changes in the landscaping (or tree growth), or possibly a very sneaky angle on the pic...but with everything else, this seems like the last nail in the coffin.

Ok, my novella is done...please commence picking it apart. Smile

Picture on billion2one.org Site

I'm sorry ... but what is that bit of blue at the bottom right of this picture?

That isn't on my card so I just wondered if I am missing something. Sorry if this has come up before... I didn't see anything about it for this topic. Thanks.

Does the Alsace region of France has a maritime climate? First off, flowers on bushes tend to make me think of Spring. This will be important in a moment.

Actually, what I see behind Satoshi are a very few evergreens, and a large area that has no foliage. Like the tree in foreground. Since it is fairly obviously winter in Satoshi's photo (note the heavy overcoat and scarf), that would mean, in the climate of the Alsace region of France, that the non-evergreen trees would have dropped their leaves. This is wholly consistent with the photo of Satoshi. See here for a view of the river from the other direction. Note how in this photo that there is very little greenery and almost all of the trees have lost their leaves. This is Kaysersberg in Winter. In doing a little more research, I now think that there is a bare area on the hillside because there is a vineyard there. The grape vines don't show up in the photo.

In Satoshi's photo, look at the lowest, leftmost window of the building that has the tree in front of it. Assuming that it is the same as the corresponding window in the other photo, look at how not only the angle is different, but the scale is different. The photo without Satoshi would have to have been taken significantly closer to the building on the right. That could easily have been under the tree that is seen in Satoshi's photo. Considering that 90% of the parts of the tree that show up in Satoshi's photo are outside of the range of the photo without Satoshi, it makes perfect sense that the tree doesn't show up in that photo.

This is Kaysersberg. The only way this isn't Kaysersberg is if someone built a town to look identical to Kaysersberg from this viewpoint. I am not saying Mind Candy wouldn't DO that, just that it is unlikely enough as to not be a real possibilty.

(Edit: added spec about vineyards behind Satoshi)
