[META] Dozens of spoilery pics found

I'm making this post because several people have asked how I came across dozens of Faith's pictures that had not yet been linked from any game pages.

First off, I apologize to anyone who may feel this was underhanded or spoiled some story points. When playing an ARG, it is sometimes difficult to know exactly what we are "supposed" to look for, find, and post about.

My discovery of these pictures actually began on August 11. Faith had posted some pictures at the top of the "Gibsonton" blog entry. I noticed that they were under the http://www.faitharella.com/images/tampa/ directory and all named "IMG_####.jpg", like how many digital cameras auto-number pictures. I wondered if there were any more that weren't being shown, so I tried a few filenames and did find some new pictures. I then generated a simple HTML page that would show any images numbered 1000-2500. While there were many little red X's, I found about 25 images that we'd not seen before. None of them were spoilery, just shots around town. I kept this find secret mostly because I did think that in the future it would come in handy. Faith eventually posted most of these Tampa pictures in other blog entries and this compilation.

Then she went to Australia. I tried many possible directory paths (replacing "tampa" with australia, clarencepark, and adelaide) and number ranges, but no luck. Finally, in "The Miracle Mile" post, she put up some new shots. I now knew the images were uploaded to "adelaide" and knew the number ranges. When I created my html page and ran it, over 120 images were visible. Some were simply nice photographs of the things around Adelaide (very nice work, I might add) but I'd now found several images which were likely semi-spoilerish, but with no context.

I created a thread on the Oculareffect.com forums, showing much of what I'd found. I felt there was a chance that finding these was "in-game", but I freely admit that I felt it more likely they were unintentionally revealed. I wanted to post about it at this point mostly because, if they were spoilery, TPTB needed to make sure they fixed their process before we found something that really killed the ending. The thread I created was eventually deleted this morning and TPTB plugged the hole by removing (or hiding?) all the images from faitharella.com that weren't meant to be seen yet.

For now, there is apparently a mirror of these interesting images at http://www.flickr.com/photos/faitharella . These pictures may not have been intended, but I think everyone agrees that it really made the game exciting for the day.

Yeah I was guessing it was something like this when I saw the post last night about the pics.

Interesting, you think maybe they'll re-structure the file system to avoid spoilers?

Thanks for the splainin lostpedian. It did seem kind of weird you posted them on OE first, rather that here calling them spoilery. But, what's done is done. No hard feelings. And it did make for some of the best mystery, laughs, and discussion on OE to date!

So just to be clear... you didn't post them to flickr yourself? Wink

Are you going to insinuate I posted Madam Steph's pics on Flickr as well?

No it's likely that he uploaded them himself. He said it had to do with naming issue associated with cameras. So he just cycled through the storage server that OE uses found them all and uploaded them to flickr. Please read more carefully and you'll see what I mean.

Just an honest yes or no would suffice.

And what photos of madam steph on flickr?

Heh, this is interesting. I've done something similar to this before, on B3ta (www.b3ta.com). We were talking about random images, and someone had the great idea of doing a Google Image search for DSC_0000, which led to a talk about privacy on the web.

I think for something like this, we should be very careful not to point fingers. Rather, I hope the PM's won't underestimate the thoroughness and inventiveness (is that a word?) of players. And honestly, this sounds like something I would have done. Shifty Eyes

How in the world could I post pics to Faith's Flickr account?

No, I meant the photos by Madam Steph.

I think the issue is more along the lines of the fact that threads dealing with this have been locked and/or closed on the OE forums, and yet the flickr account still exists, and one would wonder why, if it's meta, they haven't covered up that hole. If the account was created by someone who copied the images from faith's website and uploaded them to flickr, then technically there's nothing the PMs can do to take them down, and having them left up there (again, assume they're meta), is kind of cheap. (and I'm not pointing a finger at Lostpedian, except that he still hasn't denied it with a simple 'no')

Lostpedian wrote:

Because anyone could have control over that account, not necessarily a PM

...found with all of Faith's photos, and uploaded to the same area?

so... are you saying straight out that you didn't create that account and set up the images? I'll gladly believe you if you say no... it's just this increasing suspicion that won't stop nagging. Just yes, or no, and I'm done.

-----
flickr update: the 'Vision' photos have been removed (the controversial photos). The Adelaide set now has 82 photos, down from 123. If it's by the PMs, I'm guessing they're either removing the images altogether, or prepping the account to make it officially in-game and plug that hole, that's my guess...

I just like being mysterious sometimes, but I don't want to cause any more doubt to be cast onto this. I've been waiting like you for someone to come forward about the Flickr accounts, and every day something changes, I get more confused about what's real.

This isn't a matter of remaining 'ingame'. If the account isn't created by the PMs and it's left up there intentionally, essentially messing up how the PMs intend to release information, then that's just absolutely low. But frankly right now, I don't care any more. Everyone knows to be wary of this flickr, and the out of place photos (for the most part) are removed. The fact that you still haven't said you aren't the owner of the account loses any respect I had for you, as well as some of your past actions in this arg, at least until you fess up and say one way or the other. But I don't want to ruin the experience for other people, so I'm just dropping it.

I truly hope the account is owned by the PMs and the changes to the images is their attempt to plug the whole. But if it is and you still won't answer, then you're just trolling Rolling Eyes

I was going to say now back on topic, but this really is the topic in the thread. go figure Confused
