I could be totally wrong about that, thought. Very Happy

Haha, I work in the engineering field and one of my college professors summed it up very well when handing back a midterm:

"The average grade was a 75, those of you that got over an 85, good job. Those of you who scored less than 65, I want you to know you are well qualified for upper management."

My god we must keep this a secret!!!!!!!!!

I was reading some of the old posts and I never got to see this on the steorn site. Anyone care to elaborate? Where were the hot spots?

It was from a flash file that we came across in the images directory before they closed it. No one has seen it on the site itself. The file has since been removed from the directory and the directory has since been closed.
It was a white page that when you rolled your mouse over certain areas would get a pop-up bubble with a persons name and title like "Sean McCarthy - CEO" and when you clicked on it a new mail message would open in your mail client with the person's Steorn.com email address in the To: box.
All the email addresses are listed in subsequent post to the one where you got the quote from.

Interesting answers

There were some interesting things in the chat. A few answers were somewhat convincing actually, but some were dumb.

His response to the fake April 1st article was good. It makes sense that it would be a placeholder, and goodness knows it's not hard to accidently leave a placeholder in place.

But his refusal to give any information was very weak.

Why would people Steorn hired make Steorn sign a NDA about their own technology? That's just shoopid.

And prior art can't be from the company that's trying to patent the technology, that doesn't even make sense. You have one year after you publish information/sell the product to patent something. Since they've already applied, there's zero risk to publishing information.

There's something fishy here, but I'm thinking it's not an ARG.

mememe! I haven't yet... no idea why... searched junk and trash, no hits for anything with 'steorn' except unfiction notifications Razz

I registered on Tuesday and although the email response from Sean is dated yesterday I didn't receive it until today. When did you apply? I believe there is a built in "delay" for authenticity's sake.

I just received one... so I'm good. Wink can't remember when I applied but it was at least a few days ago

I posted two questions in the forum shortly after the chat. Questions they neatly avoided in the chat:
Does any of your test rigs actually produce any electricity.
How long have you had any of your test rigs running.

and actually got a response from them too.
remember this is an engineering company risking their reputations on this claim. Do you think they've tested it tho? Have they never seen an episode of mythbusters? lol I suppose Ireland doesnt get that broadcast.

:::: We have run the system through very long cycle runs, stoping it every 600 cycles to test the magnetic domains (there is no errosion on the magnetic domains).

:::: The technology produces mechanical energy, and no we have not hooked it up to a generator, instead we have demonstrated power output by moving weights.

They clarified the "moving weights" by saying:
:::: Yes a weight counts as a load since moving a weight is work done by the technology.

Weights people.. Weights.. for 600 rotations.. 3 - 10 minutes. Would you risk your careers on 10 minutes of testing? with a half-assed test rig?

Concidering they're claiming it will solve the worlds electricity problems, I replied with:

You may not be scientists, but you're a team of engineers.. You've brought this to the public's notice, and you're risking your careers, reputation and name on this device. Sure you don't know _why_ but at least you can perform some _engineering_ validation to prove that it is doing what you claim. If only for your own satisfaction.

Here's a blogger who talked to Sean on the phone. The blogger is very skeptical. Good article.

And Magnetic Power, Inc. claims, "Our own laboratory results confirm what Steorn is saying."

I found these via Google News. Lots of other hits, there, but I don't have time to look right now as dinner awaits.

Sean McCathy Interview

Just FYI. I'll be interviewing Steorn CEO Sean McCathy tomorrow via phone and will podcast.

Wanted to provide the unfiction community (who has been amazing at your research) an opportunity to get in on suggesting questions.

Can either comment questions on the blog post linked above (to keep private), or if you prefer forum style. can post questions here.

Thanks guys & gals for all the work y'all are doing on this.

Oook.

So there's this fantastical web site talking about some great invention.

Then shortly after, a web site pops up for no reason other than to 'watch' the goings-on of the fantastical web site.

After all this, now this random web site gets a phone interview?

Let's hope not. Because that would make our new member steornwatch an in-game character, and we all know that in-game characters are not allowed to play out their act from within the Unforums. (don't make me link to the Terms of Service, please.)

I'm seriously thinking of how to submit this whole thing -- not just the Steorn guys but also the explosion of interest and how it has unfolded -- as a story to CSICOP's Skeptical Inquirer magazine. But then I'd have to explain to their readership what an ARG is...

My personal guess is that this is either ARG or a exxageration/scam.
Four points:
1. If it's an ARG, it's setting a new level for realism and "This is Not a Game". Very impressive!
2. If it's a scam, again, it's impressively realistic.
3. If it's B.S. , somebody's head's gonna roll. (figuratively) Smile
4. If it is ACTUALLY real, Wholy $#!T thats bleeping amazing!!!!!!1! It's like a scientific holy grail! Foily!

To be fair, Steornwatch posted here to say his site is out of game (or, while we are still unclear if this is a game, I'd better say "not connected to steorn.net"). It doesn't need to be true, but I'd like take his word on that for the time being, at least until it is suspected or proven otherwise

I agree that this would be "best practice" for a game that never admits it is a game...although I do question wether not admitting it is the same as denying it. Denying it (like Steorn has done already) takes it to a new level, and a dangerous one if the whole denial is interpreted as a sure sign of a game. We certainly don't want to become ARG-Hunters festering every weird thing on the Internet.

Perhaps there will be a good learning for future PM's out of this, and some new rules/etiquette for ARG's...outright denial should be a no-no for an ARG, but once its denied, then that's it... not a game.

Hi. Just want to add my 2 cents. A lot of people are saying this can't be a arg because it's not looking and smelling like past ones. Well I got news for ya. If it did, it wouldn't work! They have to make it different or people would catch on to it out too quickly.
