[UPDATE] Path Of Least Time - 23rd Aug - Vanished Into...

"I've seen lot of places lately that have been rapidly abandoned and destroyed. Or maybe it's the other way around. I don't suppose you know anything about Silburn-Griggs, do you?"

I yawned. I wish I could say that this was an audacious piece of subterfuge on my part, but I was genuineley tired. Even next-gen ceretin can only keep sleep away for so long.

"Somewhere out west, isn't it?" I said.

"Yes, it is," replied Helena. She paused for a moment, probably wondering whether to pursue that line of conversation. I spoke up before she thought too hard.

"So what do you know about the portal?"

"Let me get one thing straight, McAllister. This is more sensitive than anything you've dreamt of before, so I am counting on you to not pass this on. I am also counting on you to help me in return."

"Fine," I said impatiently.

"After the blackout, my team worked with the Defence Forces to figure out what happened. You guys figured it out first, but we managed to go one step further and pinpoint the origin of the blackout. Guess what? It was the same location that our physicist Dervent said a radiation burst was detected from."

"Where?"

"Somewhere outside of the city. When we got there, the entire facility was abandoned. The people running it... the Third Power... had obviously known we were going to come soon, so they had to leave everything behind. With the whole place being underground, they could be anywhere. We haven't explored it fully yet, but I don't think either of us will be surprised if it turns out to be connected to the catacombs. Those clean rooms aren't much of a secret any more, huh?"

I snorted. "Do you have any good news for me? I'm a little sick of having them run circles around us all the time."

"I think there's a reason for that, but I'll get to it later. Yes, there is some good news. When we found the portal - we didn't quite believe it was a portal, at first - it was badly damaged. In fact, completely inoperable. Dervent's team is crawling all over it, and while they still haven't figured out quite how it works or what it's capable of, they're pretty confident that it only worked for one minute, at most, before burning out. That means that the Third Power didn't send over too much stuff to Earth. Judging by their setup, I don't think they expected things to go that way."

"Tell Dervent to check the portal controller. It might have-"

"She's already done that. All wiped. But there is some more unpleasant information. The parts that comprise the portal, they're almost all from the Academy. It took us some digging up to figure that out, but it's true. And while I wish I could blame all of this on the respectable Academicians-" she pronounced the word with an audible sneer, "-I am encountering some equally unpleasant politics from my superiors."

"They don't want you to investigate."

"Something tells me this isn't the first time you've heard this story."

"Not quite this story, but one very much like it. So, there's a cover-up. It's not just the Third Power building this portal on their own, they have help from people in both of our bases, and they're stopping the investigations," I said

"Exactly. And I want to know who. The portal might have impressed you and a lot of other people, but I'm more impressed - and terrified - by the way that the Third Power and their friends have been able to funnel resources from the Academy and sidetrack government investigations."

"I'll look into the Academy. I already have some leads, although it's going to be difficult with what's going on in the CRT."

"Garnet Reed?"

"Yeah."

"He's a good guy. I think. But I don't know who he takes his orders from. It's not just Sente, but I think you guessed that. Look, I want you to find out more about those parts - where they came from, where they were going, and whether there are any more of them. It's too much of a coincidence that they just happened to be available at the Academy, and in the right quantities." She paused again, as if listening to something. "I have to go - I think my key is being monitored and even this voice call could be detected. We'll talk later. I expect you to help me with this, Mr. McAllister."

I shook my head. One of these days I'm going to have hang up before her.

It strikes me as a little strange why the parts would need to be "stolen" in the first place if everyone was in on it anyway. Confused

This is either more information to convince us that Sente has been in on it from the start, or more information just to make us think that until they pull a big one over on us and its something completely different.

Guess that doesn't help too much. Rolling Eyes

Although the "short time" the portal was open may clue us in to the info that it was only 1 or 2 people that were able to come to Earth (assuming the 3p was sending people)... I don't know much about wormholes or portals, but I don't imagine a line of 30 3P agents ready to run in at once...

questions and more questions

This is a very good question. I think that not everyone was in on it, but enough people were in on it to steal the parts, and then have no investigation into it. I think the discovery of the parts at Holyoke's was not intended, but that was covered up quickly from the press. So, I agree, they didn't want the parts to be directly traced, but why go to these lengths to steal them and murder to cover it up?

My best guess: the equipment thieves knew that someone was following them and that part of the plan was to capture one of the group that was tracking them. The thieves needed to know what we know and they could only find out by capturing whoever was following the part that disappeared. Perhaps they were after Caine instead? Or perhaps the victim didn't matter to them?

I have also questioned the need for the series of murders. There seems to be unnecessary, but high-profile, bungling going on. These highly visible crimes, the murders and the spectacular explosions, can only be done if you are very confident that the highest levels of the police and government will protect you. To hope you can get away with two days of blackout in a city, takes infinite confidence.

A plot construction that makes sense to me is that the thieves hired by V to steal the Cube, were a decoy group. Someone else was always supposed to get the Cube - this group was created from the beginning as a subterfuge to direct attention from the real thieves. Perhaps some of these crimes and plots are also decoys?

One idea I have, based on the opposing interests in the Cube - the Reconstructionists, the 3P, the Brotherhood of the Six, the different departments within the Academy, the government and probably some corporate concerns as well, that we may find overlapping and conflicting loyalties in this story. I wonder if the wormhole was in fact designed to be up for a longer period, was sabotage involved?

My working theory is V is one sick puppy.

Unleashing the random spec monster!

I do have a thought, though: only Perplex City has the technology to open a wormhole. The 3P retrievers then are relying on Perplex City to provide them with a way home.

There's two possibilities - either the 3P on Earth know when the wormhole's going to be opened, or they're relying on the link for communication. Both possibilities suggest tactics.

I really like this idea. There's been some recent discussions in #syzygy, speccing that we've been missing some kloos or information all along, and this idea fits nicely into that. I have this feeling that it's a wheels within wheels thing.

I can believe that one, as well. He does seem rather unhinged.

Do we know for sure that only PXC has the technology? The technology might exist on Earth, too. Maybe not using the exact same parts, but similar ones?

I highly, highly doubt it. (The 3P might have bought the special sauce required to build a portal device, however.)

What gets me is that they went to all this trouble to send retrieval agents when they already had agents on the surface. This suggests that they don't know where the Cube is, and thus that the 3P intended to steal it but didn't, which of course ties into what we know. We have to stop the 3P from getting it back, but we still have no info on who actually did steal it.
