After actually reading the short story 'The Library of Babel", I'm guessing that line is talking about the so called "Crimson Novel."

Quote:
We also know of another superstition of that time: that of the Man of the Book. On some shelf in some hexagon (men reasoned) there must exist a book which is the formula and perfect compendium of all the rest: some librarian has gone through it and he is analogous to a god.

The man of the book discovered the annex of the entire library. In doing so, h discovered all the knowledge held within. But, in the library there is an infinite number of books that are almost the same as the annex, but they're slightly different, including typos or false information. Those books are the permutations that the line is talking about.

Then again, that rule dictates to any and every novel in the library. It's just as likely that it could be talking about some other book. Maybe The Combed Thunderclap or The Plaster Cramp or Axaxaxas mlö.

I agree with Sarah and ramsfan...the Yellow Cab & steaming manhole-cover probably is the archetypical picture of New York. If it seems that way to us Europeans, somebody from another world would probably find it striking as well. (That's not to say that it couldn't be another city...Yellow Cabs have spread to almost everywhere, I take it. But the steam suggests cold, so San Francisco and the West-Coast is unlikely, I'd say.)

EDIT - Was there something around the New York PCAG event that could be related to this? The person in this call (received during the event) doesn't sound scared...but was it ever resolved who it was?

It doesn't specifically say 'cabs', it says 'cars'... could this be intentional?

Quote:
I thought it was a dream. Or a beautiful simulation of a place I have seen so many times before in photographs or video. I knew it at once: the yellow cars driven along the streets, the steam rising up from the sidewalk gratings. I thought: how marvellous. How real. I stumbled and fell. I grazed my hand and the blood was real and the pain was real and I began to understand.

It's kind of puzzling me that noone's mentioned this yet...

If (*if*) the Liber Memorarium contained the clue that was meant to lead us here, then doesn't this mean that the author of that is most likely the author of this? It's in a similar arty, wordy style, suggesting to me authorship rather than just pointing to someone else's work. In which case, that would mean that Aiko is the author, Aiko has been to earth, and (if as seems likely the author of this left the combed thunderclap message) then Aiko stole the cube.

Am I crazy?

Of course she is well placed and appropriately skilled to put hidden messages on cards before the design is shipped. She also has motive, especially if, <spec>, she discovered that something dodgy was going on at the academy involving the cube (which could explain the sense of regret at keeping silent about said dodgy thing) </spec>.

On an unrelated note, if the strings of numbers on the wave 4 cards are indeed directions, then New York would be the kind of place such directions could be easily applied to, having a nice regular gridlike structure. Though of course I'm still hoping the Cube's in the UK.

Yep - that's normal (required, IIRC) in XHTML-compliant webpages. Nothing interesting there. (General guideline - anything on w3.org is OOG; they're the official web standards body.)

[TIAG]Personally, I think MC have been giving us a few hints to push us in the URL direction, and this was one of them - "here's a subdirectory on the academy page, eh?"[/TIAG]

Looking back, there's no reason why we couldn't have tried the URL even before wave 4 came out. I'm also wondering if Madame Bianca was pointing right at it when she said:

indulge a little and you just might learn something you really needed to know.

learning -> academy?

(On a similar hindsight note, the first one also seems to apply to, well, everything really Wink :

Maybe we're just trying to be too clever... )

You'll have to give me more specific examples than that, Garnet. I won't be baited.

No new info, but posted here for completeness. (Also added to the wiki).

Well, as I was complaining in IRC last night, I was actually thisclose to finding it myself from liber memoriarum, because I was trying words that meant "meaninglesswords" as page names on the academy website. My history even tells me I tried "babble", but the infuriating thing of it is that I'm relatively new and didn't yet know about the Library of Babel until a few days after I gave it up! I've been kicking myself since.

So what you're suggesting has actually occurred to me after a fashion. It seems that Aiko was indeed trying to point us to the Library of Babel link, so that means that she must have some knowledge of the message. Whether or not she herself stole the cube, I can't begin to say, but she does have some connection with someone who seems to have been to earth. Whether or not the person speaking is Combed Thunderclap and whether or not they stole the cube is a bit more in the vein of speculation.

So, I guess what I'm wondering is, does this point to some sort of involvement by the Reconstructionists? They're Aiko's most prominent affiliation thus far, and would have an interest in the cube. </spec>

Well, she has been in police custody under suspicion of being involved in the cube theft. The motive, being part of the Reconstructionists, is there. The means, in her daily life as a puzzle scribe is there. I also vaguely remember some controversy around her art on the night the cube was stolen--her sculptures interacted with (interfered with?) people's keys in unexpected ways, as I recall.

I feels like Aiko is firmly in Perplex City right now, though--as people have seen her and she wrote the memorial poem, so she's not there now. I don't know how much stock I put in the idea that she left and returned, but it is certainly food for thought. It is also worth thinking about her as a possible accomplice.

Hmm, and someone said it would have taken at least 2 people inside the academy to have gotten through the alarm systems...

Also, if someone did get to Earth and stayed here, or indeed if they were here for any length of time, shouldn't that crop up as a "missing person" in PXC? Or, at least, someone being AWOL for a bit?

another email.. could either mean they're linked, or they're not and it's just shoving us in the direction of the academy website..

I don't see anything apart from Aiko's memorial. Maybe just a flicker
in the system, it does happen sometimes.

(needs to be posted to the wiki too please)
