[Landalan][NEW][SITE] www.landa-systems.com

We have a new site!

http://www.landa-systems.com

In the source:
Quote:
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE SAY YOU AREN'T USING INTERNET EXPLORER!
Very Happy

It's just 2 entry fields with a lambda symbol in between.

You could have posted this is the already existing thread...not slaggin ya, but it doesn't warrant a new thread.

The already existing thread is getting big and unwieldy.

The key to being an effective team is to stay organized. No one wants to waste their time on a puzzle that has already been solved in another thread. Nor does anyone want to read about the same update 23 times in different threads. By keeping the discussions focused we can be a more effective team and we can have more fun!

(brought from the other thread)
here's the gist:

a giant lambda symbol appears with two input boxes, and the text ENTER at the top of the page.

It calls 3 javascript files, but one we're interested in. The fields are set to check the keyboard entry on every key pressed, and check the contents against the server, by calling search.php?u=(field1)&p=(field2)&sid=(rnd#)

the search.php file returns an XML island with the contents:
Code:
<info><ucl>0</ucl><ulc>0</ulc><pcl>0</pcl><plc>0</plc></info>

assuming a correct user and pass is sent, the javascript code looks for the xml element /info/output, and displays its contents in a div tag labelled 'debug' at the bottom of the page.

That's all we know right now

I told them to start a new thread. The trailhead is just for the rabbithole and early exploration. Now the game is afoot! And i'll go lock the trailhead thread now.

(came back to add clarification)

There's nothing special that I can spot except for the IE comment. I even tried visiting the site in IE just for kicks, which of course didn't help either. Same source same comment same fading in logo. Confused

I noticed that the lambda pic is actually 4 separate images. I pieced them together and inverted the colors and got the image below. I can't make anything out, but then again I don't know much about manipulating images. Looks cool anyway... Cool

The login has been solved!
In #landalan Thursday night, solve time approx 11:30pm ET - 3 1/2 hours of analysis for the solution.

Our process...
It was a complex task of figuring out what the script was doing, and what it was expecting in order to contiue. The solution is split into sections below if you want to figure some out yourself .

part 1 - code:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the script pasted the first and second fields into a querystring and called search.php in the form:
search.php?u=(field1)&p=(field2)&sid=(rnd #)

On testing the url, we find that search.php returns an XML set:
<info>
<ucl>#</ucl>
<ulc>#</ulc>
<pcl>#</pcl>
<plc>#</plc>
</info>

(where # would typically be 0, but sometimes 1, or more)
on calling the url with various test values for u and p, we felt that it might be some form of 'mastermind' game. So we began testing sets of strings and letters.

part 2 - username:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
on determining that a username length of 10 returned ucl=1 for a certain number of letters, with various values of ulc, we ran through all letters of a through z at length 10, and determined that where ulc > 0, valid letters were aceinprt (where e and p return ucl=2). Ancalime guessed the word apprentice and returned ucl=1 and ulc=10 - a match.

So we now have username=apprentice

part 3 - password:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
thinking the same for the password, we began the same routine.
Knowing that ucl gave 1 or 0 if the length was correct, and ulc gave the number of correct letters within the word, we assumed the same for pcl and plc.

We hit a roadblock though, when the few of us testing arrived at different results at the same time. At one point, I managed to capture a a set of letters that seemed right: at string length 6, D's gave a plc of 2, E's a plc of 2, G's a plc of 1, and H a plc of 1 (all with a pcl of 1, the correct length). Thus we had ddeegh as valid letters for the password, following the same rules as the username. Unscrambled, it would seem that 'hedged' would be the password. On trying it, nothing happened.

BUT, these same tests wouldn't work again. the very same sets of letters now gave different results.

part 4 - the bigger picture and the solve:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
So a number of times, we came across different sets of letters.

listing valid letters and how many each was required to return a pcl of 1 and a plc of more than 0, we managed to come up with these sets:

* acde(9) lnoru(10) - couldn't test an anagram
* ddeegh(6) - anagram hedged
* abde(11) il(6) mooz(10) - couldn't test an anagram
* def(7)...
and then the testing stopped, because Muddy had figured it out.

part 5 - how?:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
In Muddy's case, he noticed the 'hedged' test set began working again, and so he tried the apprentice / hedged combination right away, and was taken to the next page.

But 'hedged' wouldn't work again... though that mattered not, since the destination address is accessible freely

and the puzzle solution description:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The username was static, and the results returned UCL and ULC which stood for (USERNAME CORRECT LENGTH) and (USERNAME LETTERS CORRECT).
The solve for apprentice was easy, given a 'mastermind' process.

The password was a different matter. It was time sensitive, on 3 minute cycles. The password would change (assuming by user's own browser session times, so different for everyone). If you managed to figure out the password in time, with the username 'apprentice', you'd solve the login.

Muddy was lucky enough to see the same 'hedged' pattern again and tried 'hedged' as the password before it changed, successfully logging in.

On solving the login, we now have a registration page to become an operative for Landalan, being given assignments on a regular basis to solve.
* The main page after logging in describes this first puzzle in detail, including all possible passwords
* There's a status page, simply listing your current level and a code key (at this point, Apprentice)
* The current assignments page says the first mission will be uploaded late Friday, Sept 1.

The url we're led to after the initial login solve, to register as an operative is:
(major spoiler)

What a great puzzle to solve! If you manage to do it yourself - mad mad props.

/me reminisces about the good'ol ILB embedded puzzle solving sprees...

I glad someone figured it out. Even with typing the right user and pass straight into the main page right after I loaded it, it didn't work. And I tried IE and firefox. Grrr...

Is there a compiled Wiki or Guide so far? I'm reading through the original thread and learning about all the puzzles. I'm trying to recreate the process used to solve them, so that I can learn how things are working, but I'm unable to get the same results.

For example, on the image ones. I tried filling the original lamda symbol with a different color to find the link, but had no success. Is this because I'm doing it wrong, or because the original image has been replaced and I need to see an archived one?

The same goes for 'the contrast fill of the internet map', in order to solve the three branches puzzle. I'd like to know the steps on how to *do* a contrast fill. Its one thing to get the answers, its another to try and solve them yourself and see how the results are found. It makes future puzzle solving easier.

Pneumatik: The password changes every three minutes, so the password given in the solution will only work on occasion. Gives you a good puzzle to try if you want to work out the current password at a given time...

dbachen: The only real guide so far besides the 2 threads is Russ's link list which appears right now as a third thread. It lists all pages and how we got to them.

A contrast fill is fairly simple. Take the image into paintshop/photoshop/gimp and do a bucket fill on the background. This will make 'invisible ink' appear. You can also see it by playing with the contrast/brightness controls of the image (not your monitor.) Invisible Ink is just a color that is only a shade or two different from the background. Usually can't be seen with the naked eye, but the bucket fill will miss it since it's technically a different color.

It's very possible the images have been changed since the solve.
