Billion Dollars to One

Does anyone know why 256 cards appear to be going for crazy amounts on eBay?

First here and now here

The first one can't be serious but the second appears to be.

My guess is that it's either because 256 is the biggest number, or because it's unsolved.

It's like the mystery of why Riemann is going for more than Relativity, when logic dictates that because Relativity is solvable, there should be fewer unsolved copies of it out there.

I'm just a bit gutted I swaped my Riemann card a few months ago for another silver... when I should've kept it, then got 60 quid for it on ebay.

We were told that Riemann and Relitivity would be retired soon, this probaby explains the high prices for them as sellers think people will be stupid enough to pay that much.

My theory as to why Riemann is going for more than Relativity is that there is higher demand for it. Relativity has been solved and those who have been trying to keep up with the points would have already purchased one as opposed to Riemann which some may have been holding off as there wasn't any apparent hurry. As far as supply, even though there are more unsolved Riemann's, how many are unscratched?

And to #256, it's just a matter of having two or three people who are new to the game and want every single card RIGHT NOW and have the money to buy at any price. At some moment in time there was only one #256 up and two people had that panicked urge to bid an insane amount. Once another #256 was listed, the high one was abandoned and the next one was jumped on. In most cases there are only two such crazies so the second card would have gone for a lot less. For this example there were three who needed the card and were willing to go quite high so the two losers from the first auction jumped on the second and fought it out until another card was listed. It can happen at anytime to any card provided there isn't a Buy-It-Now up at the time.

Perhaps the first lot thought they were bidding in Australian dollars, and then a canny dealer, seeing a card go for several times the usual amount, thought putting one in at less than half that was worth a punt. Or maybe it's just that cards are difficult to get in Australia. Unless one of them is related to Satoshi and is trying to buy up all the cards.

That was with me wasn't it?

I do remember giving you some free cards once or twice as well...unless you're someone else!

Maybe they're people like me who are desparate after buying 48 wave 4 packs and getting 2 silvers (one in 144!!).

Indeed, it was with you. Thanks for that. Wink

This was before we knew Riemann was a rarity.
