[UPDATE] Scarlett Kite - 8 Sept 06 - Part 2: Curiouser
Quote:
Violet's transcribed that letter into something readable. It's rather intriguing:
My dear children, Edward and Amaithe -
As I write this, my time draws near. I have passed too many hours away from you, indeed, and never conceived a manner in which to tell you of all I had seen and done. I am sorry for it. I love you and kiss you both. If your heart is in the matter and you wish to learn more of your father, there is a place which contains much knowledge. I cannot write its name, but this puzzle will lead you to it. I am confident you will find out its secret. Should you travel there at last, go safely and forgive me.
Your ever-loving,
Papa

So it's a map then too?
Do we need to figure out how it was encrypted to discover the map element or...what?

How about laying the lines over the Granier pages and picking out the letters and words?

Oooh, yeah, that.
Or - maybe - each of the lines is a layer of a skyline? Although that doesn't necessarily help much - unless we work out from which point in the city one would see buildings in such a layer?
I dunno. Guin's idea sounds better. o.o

Assuming we printed out both the lines page AND the diary page at the correct sizes AND lined up the lines in the right place... sure, it's worth a shot.

What do you think we should do, then?
Edit: That sounded snarky. Wasn't meant to.
But - we didn't get a scan of the note itself, did we? Maybe suggest it to Scarlett and/or Violet, see what they can do?

i don't know, i think achenar could be on to something. I don't have the software to do it, but maybe if we add all of the lines together... we'll get a skyline. maybe if every line that also has another "bump" on that same area will be that much taller? adding the bumps together on one line could find something...

I think this is probably a curb "map" as was suggested in the other thread and that the starting point is the house Scarlett is in.
The question is which way up should the paper be?
Cheers,
Bel

I'm wondering what the context for the map is. This sounds like something Granier meant his children to find. How long ago would that have been? Has the geography of Perplex City changed since then?
Sorry to play devil's advocate here... Maybe I'll make up for it by reading up on Granier.

Yeah, that's a very good point. The geography would have changed quite a bit, since he lived around the time that the Gorge was formed. The city would have been in the process of being rebuilt when he died.

I think having slept on it and spent a night looking into it is more than likely something else - rather than an overlay.
Somethings are nagging me though. Granier's children for one. Suppose they did find the trail and his "wrong doing" whatever that may be. We know little of them. But the fact we are being drawn back to Granier makes me wonder if we missed something first time (yep them pages are dull!) Obviously something bad happened hense the "forgive me" reference.
Granier has been linked [SPEC] to the 3P (although our dynamic duo disregard this as ridiculous).
I can't beleive no one in the Adamek household had never solved the mosaic! Especially when good old Uncle Sanj's:
Quote:
contributions to the Academy's visual puzzles have been of an extraordinary standard, six times winning the Taversen Award
If its a map - are we going back somewhere? Or somewhere new?
Might be worth asking about his family.

Hmm.. not actually related to this, but for anyone who watches anime, reminds me a bit of the show Fullmetal Alchemist. Two brothers are looking in a famous alchemist's books for information on the Philosopher's Stone, and it turns out he encoded the entire process in a series of cookbooks.
Which makes me wonder - is the diary the only thing Granier did that we should be looking at? Maybe only part of the secret is in the diary, and other parts are in other writings and/or works.

And on top of that, look how simple the actual solution was - just three 90 degree turns. I suppose it could simply be a case of just overthinking the problem. But I think it's just a little too odd to miss that for that long.

Looks to me like it's a square waveform, one that probably is carrying a binary message. Low state=0, high state=1.
There's a couple of problems with this idea, though I think they might be solvable:
1) There's no clock signal- we don't know exactly how many 0's a low-state period indicates. However, there are several small (maybe one pixel wide) jumps, so we may be able to use them as a baseline for the smallest unit.
2) There's no guarantee that the lines are consecutive- if you read from right-to-left going down (as if you were reading English), there are several lines that end in a high state while the next line starts low. This happens on lines 4-5, 8-9, 9-10, and 10-11.
I really don't know if this is the right track or not- I just don't want us to get stuck on the idea that this is some sort of topographic map (which I tend to think isn't the right idea).

This is about what I thought, but using the small jumps then you would have times with 10s of 1s or 0s in a row, making not a lot of sense.

could this anything to do with PWM?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse-width_modulation
note:-
The inclusion of a clock signal is not necessary, as the leading edge of the data signal can be used as the clock if a small offset is added to the data value in order to avoid a data value with a zero length pulse.
