[UPDATE] Cryptic messages back and forth

Speaker's newest blog entry says he received this cryptic message:

Here's the solution:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

If you flip it, and run the text through a Hex translator, you get the following:

"rewsnaymwonkydaerlauoynehterauoyknihtiohwtuobagniklateruoyfinadjdotnillacuoydraehtisithgifehtniuoygnipeeksiecneicsnoc--m"

Read that in reverse and you get this (punctuation added):

"M-- Conscience is keeping you in the fight is it? Heard you call in to DJDan. If you're talking about who I think you are then you already know my answer."

SPEC: "M" stands for Malek, the mysterious 'fixer' who called into DJDan with a message for Rachel that was encoded using page numbers from Bad Twin: "I know where he is. I can set it up!"

So presumably, this is Rachel's answer.

Now it's the Ninja's turn to receive a cryptic blue message:

Here's the solution:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

This time it's a keyboard code. After you flip the message vertically, it can be translated by exchanging each character with the character that's immediately to the left of it on the keyboad. So s=a, d=s, f=d, etc etc. This goes for punctuation as well: /=. and .=, The one tricky thing is that 'z' is used to indicated capitalization because the SHIFT key is immediately to its left. Anyway, here is what it says:

"R -- I think it's fair to say, whatever conscience I have was built on faulty equipment. This is a matter of duty. Loyalty... Speaking of which, I've been troubled by the very recent disappearance of an old friend, de Zylva. We all saw your Sri Lanka video. You were captured at the end, and yet, there you were, blasting those Lost producers in San Diego not a week later. And, I have to wonder... did de Zylva have something to do with that? Do you know what's become of him?"

SPEC: This is likely Malek's reply. I have no idea who 'de Zylva' is supposed to be, though.

Now it's Other Girl's turn.

Here's the message decoded:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"I knew you were behind that. I just knew. He never told me, you know? When I hit the ground I was sure I was dead. The camera was broken, they were dragging me to my feet... and then a burst of gunfire in the air. These were SCIENTISTS, unarmed. They hit the ground. But not Mittelwerk. He kept coming until de Zylva turned the shots in his direction. Once Mittelwerk was face down on the ground, de Zylva grabbed my hand and we were gone. With the camera.

He didn't talk. He said he was de Zylva, that was it. We knew Mittelwerk was already in pursuit, but we stuck to tunnels that had been dug out during various wartimes. We had some close calls. The goal was the American embassy in Colombo, but when we got there, we knew that was impossible. It was being watched -- the airport, too. de Zylva said The Hanso Foundation had too much influence in Colombo to take the risk.

And, then, they caught wind of us again. We knew we could be caught at any second, and the only important thing was that video. EVIDENCE of Mittelwerk's world-wide decimation plot. I'd planned for this. All I needed was a secure, high-speed connection. The Hanso goons knew it too. They surrounded the place while I was uploading. We barricaded ourselves, de Zylva knew an escape route. I barely got out, made my way to a friend of de Zylva's who could get me to India. I swear, I waited for de Zylva. But he never came.

I'm so sorry."

Conveniently saved by someone previously unmentioned?

Surely not.

Apparently "de Zylva" is Sinhalese for "deus ex machina."

And another thing... "Mittelwerk's world-wide decimation plot?" That wasn't my understanding of the video...

Rachel Blake is a woman on a mission, remember. She's convinced herself that Hanso is evil, and everyone keeps telling her so. Even though Hanso is showing itself to be, y'know, LESS evil than maybe everyone is saying, I don't think she'll give that up.

Though I doubt Persephone would have thought so much horrible... wait...

Well.. technically, to "decimate" is to kill one in ten. As Mittelwerk seems determined to perfect a virus that kills 30% of the population, maybe she just extrapolated that he means to unleash this virus on the world. Which may be the plan, as we don't know what they are trying to do in order to extend the lifetime of humanity.

"I'd planned for this. All I needed was a secure, high-speed connection. The Hanso goons knew it too. They surrounded the place while I was uploading. "

"...With the wolves at the door, I decided than instead of just uploading the mother to youtube quick, a better idea would be to break the video into 70 separate fragments, and then design pretty little gyph pictures for each one. Then I just needed to put the fragments on loads of different sites, some of which needed to be hacked. Then I ran away from the goons"

IMHO, this game is stupid and has abandoned all pretence of credibility.

man! people are really down this game!

Personally, I'm extatic I know more about Lost than some of my other more obsessive fFriends. This game is a vehicle to let people see just what some of those weird-ass things are on the island. They want to tell all these things; They really want to explain the black rock, and the numbers, and why amongst all this other fFood there's brand name chocolate bars ... They want to -- but they can't. So they've employed some fFans, made up some characters, and are spilling a story.

I get a sense that the enthusiasm fFor the game design is quite high, while some of the planning is a bit low. I, fFor one, am perfectly willing to fForgive some logistical and writing holes in exchange fFor some deep plot about the show. Bear in mind the game isn't really quite about Rachel Blake.

I'm calling the game a general success, in that regard. They are giving fFans of Lost deep access to the hidden bits of the plot. And every now and then there's a puzzle or something. Ok, so it's a search opera. I've definitely played better. But this is delivering on what it was intended to, I believe.

See, I'll totally agree with you on most of your points. It's delivering on Lost mythos, and it's giving us insight into the story behind the second season (which we likely wouldn't find out about in the coming season, since yet again it has changed direction; oh man I love the show). The problem is that it isn't just a few small logical holes, it is huge gaping chasms of logical implausibility, an issue of pacing and an issue of condescension towards the ARG community (say what you will about the non-ARGer; if you're making an ARG for anyone, you have to do better than to fake a chocolate bar hunt and then not actually show up, or to stretch a two-month act into a search for codes/glyphs).

Anyway, beyond that, you've hit right upon the reason why I check this particular subsection of Unfiction every day - I want to learn about the Lost story that I wouldn't learn otherwise. I will keep checking because I love the show and the stuff we're learning is sweet information which I can throw at my friends who mocked me for playing. But that doesn't mean that the game itself was a success in any way.

I feel exactly the same way Shaggy. I haven't really felt any reason to participate in the game anymore. An island we weren't supposed to find, glyphs that are found within seconds of release, and candy bars that are handed out a very large distance away from where I live (yummy dark chocolate candy bars). So now I just check to see what new info is out there. Doesn't seem to be much else to do.

Another message. This time it appears when you highlight the shutdown THF.org page:

And the solution:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

It's a ROT-4 code. Using Unforums' handy-dandy ROT-it tool (which was new to me!), you get this:

"This is not your fault. As you once shouted at the top of your lungs,
we've all got "blood on our hands." I just hope my friend is resting easy.

Where are you? I'll need you to meet me in Norway."

So we'll see Rach in Norway next, I guess..

I wish it were that simple. Fact is, as much as I want to, I still can't trust you. I want to believe you, the man who helped me in Paris, but "de Zylva's"(?) name was not not unknown. You could be Mittlewerk himself, springing a trap under my feet. I need confirmation it's you. I need you tell me something only you could know.
