Walk for the Cure: JDRF

This year, I'll be taking part in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Walk to Cure Diabetes along with a half-million other walkers across the country. Our goal: To raise $86 million to help fund research for a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications.

On Oct 22 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas - there will hundreds of folks moving their shoes on behalf of 1000s of kids and their families in Southern Nevada (and tens of 1000s across the world) living with diabetes. This past month I had the sad responsibility of working with 10 families!!! Over 150 kids a year have been diagnosed in the Las Vegas area.

Type 1, or juvenile, diabetes, is a devastating, often deadly disease that affects millions of people--a large and growing percentage of them children.

Many people think type 1 diabetes can be controlled by insulin. While insulin does keep people with type 1 diabetes alive, it is NOT a cure. Aside from the daily challenges of living with type 1 diabetes, there are many severe, often fatal, complications caused by the disease.

That's the bad news... and yes, it's pretty bad.

The good news, though, is that a cure for type 1 diabetes is within reach. In fact, JDRF funding and leadership is associated with most major scientific breakthroughs in type 1 diabetes research to date. And JDRF funds a major portion of all type 1 diabetes research worldwide, more than any other charity.

My goal is that someday very soon there will be a cure. And when a family arrives at the hospital we can medically stabilize the child and then administer the proper protocol to cure them.
- No more daily insulin shots
- No more multiple poking fingers to get blood samples
- Mo more worrying if someone can have a piece of candy or that glass of milk
- No more worrying about going low during a soccer game or while sleeping
- No more excessive trips to the bathroom or blurry vision or frequent infections that keep kids from learning in school
- No more worrying about chronic complications that can lead to blindness, kidney failure, amputations, shortened lifespans......

Walk for the Cure: JDRF 2006
I'm doing it again, because we still don't have the cure.

JDRF Walk Shoes

I'm walking again this year, Saturday Oct 21st at UNLV.

My personal fundraising goal: $1000.
My team goal: $5000.
Nationwide goal: To raise $90 million to help fund research for a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications.

I'm writing to ask for your support because now more than ever, EACH of us can be a part of bringing about a cure. Each of us can make a real difference

Together, we can make the cure a reality.

Please visit my Walk Web page if you would like to donate online or see how close I am to reaching my personal goal.

You're welcome.

My goal in 2006 was $1000. I raised a total of $1700. Las Vegas as a walk site surpassed it's goal and raised > $500.000 towards research for the cure.

JDRF as a fundraising organization funnels 85% of all money raised to research and it's mission. It's operating costs is one of the lowest of well known charity organizations.

This year I'll have to set my personal goal higher. Thank you to all the support from uF members.

JDRF Walk for the Cure 2008: Wipe Out Diabetes

I'm back on the Walk Schedule this year.

Oct 11, 2008 at UNLV I'll be joining over 200 other families in Las Vegas (many of which I have been with when they were first diagnosed and helped train on how to manage their child's devistating disease).

As many as 3 million Americans* have type 1 diabetes, a disease most often diagnosed in childhood that strikes suddenly, lasts a lifetime, and carries the constant threat of deadly complications, including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and amputation. JDRF's mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Thanks to dramatic research progress, a cure is now within our reach.

If you would like to help me Wipe Out Diabetes, please consider a donation at my walk page. No pledge is too small.

I can't do anything crazy like dye my hair (some silly military regulation prevents that) but I might consider something else if it means a generous donation. Make an offer and we'll deal.

That's too bad, I'm sure Celina would have loved the company. Stupid military. When's the deadline? I can't donate right now but I want to make sure I don't do it too late.

Someone can donate ANY time. But my deadline (for the walk this year) would be Saturday Oct 11th.

Giving thanks to the unFiction folks who have generously donated to JDRF. I'm 30% to my 2008 goal.

It's not too late, even $5 helps (85% of all monies goes directly towards research for the cure to diabetes).

Thank you for thinking of us! Here is the donation page again.

Yes. thanks to all the unFiction folks and especially to Kona for supporting this great organization. I have a family member who was diagnosed at the age of 11 with type 1 diabetes. Although she is in her 40's now, we are all hoping for a cure in her lifetime. It's not to late to donate! Very Happy
