Just a little bit of Houston geography...

The area of town the Doctor seems to be hanging out in (based on the pictures and their corresponding addresses, anyway) is the Midtown/Montrose area. Five years ago, Midtown was fairly depressed economically, but lately it's seen a lot of gentrification -- new (and stupid-expensive) condos, marketed toward people who work downtown. The Montrose has a reputation as the gay/bohemian district; it's sandwiched between Midtown and the Museum District, and the Museum District abuts the Med Centre. You're likely to see more random weird stuff in the Montrose, but there's also a lot of new yuppie condos as well.

If I had to put odds on where to find a spiritualist's house, I'd bet on the Montrose.

OK, I just emailed Jochen to see if he wants to talk biology with someone...

Quote:
Dear Dr. Peoper,

A mutual acquaintance of ours suggested I contact you. My name is $redacted, and I am a bioinformaticist in California. I'm not familiar with the "AV" group that has been sending you messages, but as a fellow biologist I'm obviously quite concerned about any group which seeks to intimidate people in our field. Much of my work lately has dealt with evolutionary biology; perhaps I might be able to help pinpoint what it is that "AV" seeks to threaten you over. I admit that I haven't run across any of your published work yet; would it be possible for you to point me at some of your research?

That, and I'm always delighted to meet other researchers in my field. If you'd like to chat online sometime, my Yahoo! name is maradydd.

I've also done some side work in computer security, and would be happy to help you set up measures so that your email and online chats can't be eavesdropped on.

I hope your work is going well, and hope to hear from you soon. (Of course, please feel free to confirm with Angry Banana that I am who I say I am.)

Cheers,
$redacted

(Admittedly, it's been about a year since I was actively working in bioinfo, but I can still talk the talk, so let's see what he says...)

Hmmm...I would be willing to talk with him about white Wicca (my minor is in religious studies) if anyone thinks it would help. Should I give it a go? Or should I wait?

And thank you maradydd, I really do think that we are overlooking something, and a biologist in our midst could be a lot of help!

Btw, did anyone else notice these two things? The Dr. seems to know who Angelina is...and that AngBa's icon-guy played a pirate...but he didn't actually know the guy's name? Why such spotty knowledge if he has such an aversion to the man?
Additionally, the Dr. mentioned, quite a ways back, that he didn't want to tell us why he went to the Vatican before he left, but he did say that he would be willing to talk later...my question is, would this reveal any dirt?

Pony, I would definitely get ahold of him if you're willing to talk white Wicca with him. One thing he asked was for me to see if anyone would be able to help him with his newest fascination...

Well, my buddy icon wasn't Johnny Depp or Orlando Bloom (both well known actors) but a lesser known British actor and he wasn't in his pirate costume - so the Dr. does seem to know about American Film and culture (granted Angelina has been getting a lot of world wide publicity recently, yes I am also a celeb gossip fiend...) I don't know why he had such a problem with the icon, strange to say the least... Since I changed it to Angelina just for him last night, maybe he will be happier!

Prod him for info on the Vatican - but try to earn his trust first, that's why I've spent so much time idle chatting with him...

...On another note, I find it strange that he is capable of uploading and posting vids on youtube, sending the pictures he's taking, managing to set up IM accounts - but doesn't know how to scan and upload the postcards?

oh, and feel free to hit me up on IM if you want - I'm usually on in the evenings (CST) Yahoo: theangrybanana

I found the real reason that the doc left Germany. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&t=k&q=Germany&ie=UTF8&z=18&ll=48.857699,10.205451&spn=0.002404,0.006738&om=1

[23:33] oraclle_uk: Hello doctor - I'm an acquaintance of the Angry Banana
[23:34] docjpjr: Yes? Have we spoken?
[23:34] oraclle_uk: No - I thought I'd introduce myself though. I've been poring over those warning videos and postcards you've let us see
[23:34] docjpjr: Yes
[23:35] oraclle_uk: How is your cat settling in to his new home?
[23:35] docjpjr: He is very crazy
[23:36] oraclle_uk: I've never owned a cat - is it normal for them to be a bit crazy?
[23:37] docjpjr: I think so. They are very intuitive.
[23:37] docjpjr: Maybe too much
[23:38] oraclle_uk: Ah - yes I've heard that they can sense things that we wouldn't notice if it kicked us in he proverbial
[23:38] oraclle_uk: *the
[23:38] docjpjr: DO you know something about AV?
[23:39] oraclle_uk: Know? Very little - I suspect a few things but find it's best to keep speculation to a minimum and follow whatever facts you have to hand
[23:40] oraclle_uk: For instance; it's obvious that they have religious connections to their organisation
[23:40] oraclle_uk: ...or at least supernatural
[23:41] docjpjr: I will have some information the friends of the banana soon I believe. I can not say what yet.
[23:41] oraclle_uk: OK - I can be patient
[23:41] docjpjr: I have struggled with how to digitize it for the internet but maybe the best way is just to pass it to one of you.
[23:42] oraclle_uk: You mean physically?
[23:42] docjpjr: Banana perhaps can help me with who to trust.
[23:42] oraclle_uk: Indeed
[23:42] docjpjr: Yes it is an unusual object. I can not say more at this time.
[23:42] oraclle_uk: Of course
[23:43] docjpjr: The writing on it is not like any I have seen in the world.
[23:43] docjpjr: Maybe it is old.
[23:44] oraclle_uk: Does it look old?
[23:44] oraclle_uk: Or is that inferrence from the inscription?
[23:45] docjpjr: Yes but I do not think it is old it is..ok please I should not say more at this time.
[23:45] oraclle_uk: Fair enough doctor
[23:45] docjpjr: How do you know the banana?
[23:46] oraclle_uk: Through a like-minded set of individuals who meet online to help each other with riddles and similar
[23:46] docjpjr: hmm
[23:47] oraclle_uk: hmmm?
[23:47] docjpjr: I hope AV people do not meet online to solve riddles!
[23:47] oraclle_uk: lol
[23:48] oraclle_uk: Well from what I have learnt of the organisation I would have to say that I agree
[23:48] docjpjr: It is worse than you think I believe. I have much more evidence.
[23:49] oraclle_uk: However, we do have checks and balances as far as these things go - I believe that at the present you are quite safe.
[23:49] oraclle_uk: We look forward to helping you make sense of it
[23:49] oraclle_uk: ...and why you have been targeted
[23:49] docjpjr: Thank you. I have to go now. We can talk again later?
[23:50] oraclle_uk: Of course - see you later

A little inane perhaps but at least we know what to expect in the relatively near future.

I have to admit I choked a bit when he asked me how I knew Angba Confused As someone who is new to this is there some way of describing our particular situation without inducing doubt in our trustworthiness?

...and that's midnight here; gotta go... sleepy... :snore:

No, that's pretty normal for someone in "jeopardy" to be distrustful at first. He's playing it safe... I told him if he was unsure about anyone to ask me (also a nice way to get an IM addy if AV somehow shows up...) I'll vouch for you Wink

myc - what the heck is that????

I haven't the faintest, it was posted on digg.com, and I saw it and immediately started giggling and thought of our poor doctor, forced to leave europe. Honestly, I think it was a bug on the photo when it was scanned or photographed, or it's an easter egg from the google developers. I guess I should have mentioned that it's very definitely not in-game, but I was a bit too tickled by the possibility of a biologist being chased out of germany by giant bugs to think that through.

Not especially, the common name is "Live Oak". They do that sort of thing above and below the ground. Sidewalks in older neighborhoods here get... interesting due to root action by these trees.

I could be wrong, but I believe thatt 92-27-06 3.jpg is a set of lofts and offices that previously housed a pair of nightclubs, "Emos" and "Some" (the remaining Emo's in Austin is still in business). Previous to that, I think it might have been some kind of medical facility, but I am unsure.

Mark that image as a clue in the most tenative sense possible.

Thanks, I didn't know that. We don't have those here in northern Michigan. Smile

Ok, I'm still chatting w/ the Dr... Myc - pay attention, he's made several mentions to wanting to pass the item off to you - but wants you to find a "good witch" to protect you, as he thinks the item is dangerous...

I think he's about to go for the night, but I'll post the transcript when I'm done...

(also I should be getting a picture of the witch shop soon)
