[UPDATE] [EMAIL] Perplex City Newsletter - 21 Sept 06
CubeFests, Jobs, And Bars

Quote:
In this week's round-up:

* Cubefest!
* We Need A Web Developer
* Perplex City gets its own bar
* Story Update
* Leaderboard Update
* Bonus Leaderboard Puzzle

And now for the timber-shiverin' news, me-hearties! (OK, we know Talk Like A
Pirate Day was yesterday, but we can't help ourselves...)

** CUBEFEST: LONDON **

Our players have been busy devising a social meet-up, and are proud to unveil
Cubefest - an afternoon of Perplexing revelry in Shoreditch, London on the
afternoon of Saturday 7th October. Naturally, we'll be popping along to talk
about the game and partake in the fun, plus there'll be lots of fellow players
and as-yet-unrevealed "bonus stuff."

We'll have extra details in the next newsletter, but for now you can find out
more here:

http://perplexorum.com/showthread.php?t=409

(If you'd like to hold a simultaneous event for local players somewhere else in
the world, thereby creating a glorious International Day Of The Cube, just let
us know by emailing otherSPLATperplexcity.com...)

** MC NEEDS YOU! (WELL, IF YOU'RE A WEB DEVELOPER.) **

Mind Candy has big, *big* plans for the future, and we're busy expanding our
team so we can turn all our coolest ideas into reality. We're currently looking
for a hotshot web developer who can look after the graphics (Photoshop/
Illustrator/ InDesign) and the coding (CSS/XHTML, and AJAX would be awesome
too) for expanding our existing websites and building new ones. There are other
roles that currently need filling (and bagels, but that's another story) - view
all the details on our company/recruitment site:

http://mindcandydesign.com/recruitment/index.html

** THE PERPLEXBAR OPENS... **

Not our own venue of debauched puzzling, I'm afraid (although naturally it's on
our to-do list) but a great new Firefox extension from Mastercheese, one of our
wonderful players. It installs an additional bar at the top of your browser
with links to all the Perplex City websites, and a special search box that lets
you search the player wiki, leaderboard, and forums for more information. The
perfect widget for any self-respecting Cube Hunter, you can download it here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3264/

** STORY UPDATE **

Scarlett finds a note and a puzzle from Anthony Granier to his children behind
the puzzle mosaic. Together with some help from Earth, Kurt, Violet and Scarlett
discover the puzzle is a map leading to the Lancewood Archipelago - also known
as the Isles of Gyvann. Serendipitously, Scarlett is also put on an extra term
of independent study by her university, leaving her at loose ends.

Meanwhile, Caine and Violet have a bit of a tiff. Caine disavows any further
involvement with the cabal and their undertakings, leading Violet to engage in
some unknown embarrassing behaviour that leaves her in a hurry to leave the
city for a while. She asks her old Reconstructionist friends for any
information they have on the islands. Equipped with navigational information
from the religious group, Scarlett and Violet head off to see what they can
find - and find they do! Soon the pair stumble on what appears to be an old,
abandoned lab complex, and begin exploring it to see if they can decipher its
dusty secrets.

Will the Kiteway sisters learn to work together and unearth the source of
Anthony Granier's long-ago guilt, or is this island holiday going to end with
empty hands and hot tempers?

Catch up on the girls' adventures at http://www.quirkyacuity.com and
http://www.thescarlettkite.com...

(Psst... Some clever Cube hunters have found a subdirectory under
www.perplexcityacademy.com: it's named for Borges's library - the one that
shares its appelation with a very famous tower. Can you find it, too?)

** LEADERBOARD UPDATE **

The leaderboard remains much the same as last time around, with Tally in pole
position and many of Wave 3's usual suspects (OK13, UKver2.0, Guin, doublecross)
close behind. Kinkajou is this week's best new player with 4141 points
(although blade441 has more solves - 116, to be precise) while thewolfboy is
Player Of The Month, completing his ascent from zero to 18th place with 15400
points earned in the past four weeks. Props also go out to Jaikaiman,
springdragon, speshady and niknak who've all broken the 200 solves barrier in
their first month on Perplex City. All hail their glorious puzzling regimes!

** BONUS NEWSLETTER PUZZLE **

Last week, we asked you which four countries only have one vowel in their name
- not including Y. The answers: Chad, Egypt, Cyprus, and everyone's favourite,
Kyrgyzstan! Extensive playtesting has shown this puzzle is infinitely more
frustrating if you're at a restaurant far away from maps, atlases, or the
ever-tempting Wikipedia. Try it out on your friends... (but don't forget to
tell them that you heard it here first!)

This week, another simple puzzle, courtesy of Mind Candy's newest
puzzle-designer Eric Harshbarger:

What's the only number, which when spelled out with Scrabble tiles, the tiles
sum up to that same number?

Answer next week, but until then - happy hunting!

Mind Candy

Woohoo!

Due to the extremely fortunate timng of the forums coming back up, I can be the first to post a solve, even if it is a really easy one.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
T = 1 W = 4 E = 1 L = 1 V= 4 E= 1
1+4+1+1+4+1=12

Yay me!

Actually, the funny thing is, in a standard Scrabble game, there's more than one number worth its spelling.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Because they forgot to emphasize a "no blanks" rule.

If you're allowed to use blanks, numerals worth their points are one (any two of the three as blanks), two (one blank as the W), three (the H and one other as a blank), five (either only the V or the F and either vowel), seven (one blank substituting for anything but the V), and eight (one blank substituting for the E, the I, or the T).

As an announcement, I can also confirm that Boston, MA will be hosting a CubeFest event of its own. Taking place in Pandemonium Books & Games in Central Square, Cambridge, MA, it'll have introductory events and puzzles for newcomers and discussions, trades, and other fun stuff for veteran Cube Hunters.

There won't be booze (it's a family establishment), but there will be snacks, and there will also be a fresh box or two of PXC cards just waiting to be bought in the store.

You can get directions from the store's website, http://www.pandemoniumbooks.com - hope to see some of you guys there.

Yes, well, I did think of that, but I kinda assumed that they just forgot about that.

Anyone in Australia (particularly Melbourne) interested in holding a CubeFest? I'd so go to that, kids or no kids.

If you do, contact Mind Candy. They're helping out the Boston get-together with a care package of some kind. I think they might be interested in seeing a mini-competition between cities.

Great job!!! I'm sure there are lots of players in Boston who will like to participate in a CubeFest.

Edit to add: I hadn't read the top post about the newsletter.

Way to go Mastercheese! Thanks for making this for us.

Guess they decided to leave my name out of this - no mention of the email I sent which some players have taken to mean that I was to blame for Caine's leaving. I think this clarifies that Caine's departure was part of the story all along.

Not that I am too defensive about this or anything... but. ( Wink ) Kurt has consistently reiterated my basic point to Caine in that email. They were being monitered throughout all of the "parts" operation by persons we haven't yet identified. People powerful enough or knowledgable enough to change the Academy database. We can't forget about those people, who are probably now monitoring all the communications about the lighthouse as well.

That's a pretty cool toolbar. I've put it up in the Quick Reference forum quicklinks for all to use.

It seems the bar needs to be updated for the new Firefox version, or did I miss the update? Loved the bar. I wasn't playing for a month or so, got the bar, and started playing a day or two afterwards. The bar sitting on the top of my screen definitely make me wanna play Smile

And as for CubeFest: Cambridge - I'll be there with either 1 or 2 of my friends. It'll be good to talk to more than just 1 person in the flesh about PXC.
