Yeah, I understand, and that's pretty much what I figured. I didn't mean to suggest that you had anything to do with the game, by the way, but that your remonstration might have prompted the PM to pull the UF reference.

Just some info I dug up on the end of the world:

The end of the 13th b'ak'tun (December 12, 2012) is conjectured to have been of great significance to the Maya, but does not necessarily mark the end of the world according to their beliefs, but a time of re-birth. According to the Popol Vuh, a book compiling details of creation accounts known to the Quiché Maya of the colonial-era highlands, we are living in the fourth world. The Popol Vuh describes the first three creations that the gods failed in making and the creation of the successful fourth world where men were placed. The Maya believed that the fourth world would end in catastrophe and the fifth and final world would be created that would signal the end of mankind.

In reality, the Mayans believed that the world would end on October 13, 4772, which is a Friday. This is confirmed by a date from Palenque, which projects forward in time to 1.0.0.0.0.0. The Classic Period Maya obviously did not believe that the end of this age would occur in 2012, but on this later date.

Hmmmm Looks like Yshk was pretty on point with the date, the year is off...

Does anyone know anything about the Mayan language? (Before the conquistadores)

It might be worth looking into.

Hey guys, just thinking

The Timer is in PST (Aussie Time)

Does this have any relevance, or is it just a random choice?

Caterpillar, I had posted wondering about some of the same issues, and I'm the Kilroyest of Kilroyish noobs (though admittedly one who's conceived a sudden and obsessive interest in Teh Meta and Teh ARGhistory). Sorry I missed your take on it.

Anyhoo, I'm glad that aspect of the game was defused; I feel more comfy diving in now if you fine UFers will have me Rock On

Maya Quiche is still spoken today, as there are many natives in central america who keep their culture. Here's a dictionary if you want, but I didn't found any of the words in question there.

What does it say if you look at it now (approximately)? I looked a bt closer at the actual time its reporting, and right now in US Eastern Time, it's about 11:59, and the timer reads 1.00.01.##.###. In other words, what I'm seeing is counting down to midnight tomorrow in my time zone, which is not PST.

My guess is that you're also seeing a location-specific countdown, and I think that's happening because the ActionScript it's using is a date() function which, if I'm not mistaken, gets the current time from the user's machine. That must be why in the source code they specify "Midnight PST regardless of what you may think you see."

I always get messed up on time zones, but would that be GMT - 7:00?

I can see the posts, but they seem to be pretty banal- complaints about a lack of lovelife, talk about his depression, typical blogger fare. What is that quote from? I didn't see it on the site?

In response to the time, you could look up at the top of the forum and get the time (kinda)

Example:

You last visited on Today, at 1:24 pm
The time now is Wed Oct 11, 2006 10:32 pm
All times are UTC - 6

Well, Pacific time is 1 hour less than UTC, so if the top says 10:32pm, it's 9:32pm PST. So, that's one way to go, if you're having trouble with it. Another way is to just set your computer's time based on that, this way you won't miss out on the midnight crazy stuff. Very Happy
