A list of the people (and dogs) mentioned (Question marks on the ones that may not be people):

Laika 212
Laika 219
Laika 223
Laika 224

Both Master and Master Kiteway are mentioned; maybe the same person, maybe not
CT(?)
Aparna (?)
Chadwick (?)
Akos
Ian
Martin
Gyvann

Major Elan
Major Jackson
Major Maine
Major Stephens
Major Choi
Carter

Maine mentioned Choi, Jackson and Stephens in Lancewood. He also mentioned he made it farther than the others, so chronologically I think the human test subjects were:

(Thorpe-not mentioned here but named in Lancewood)
Jackson- who turned into steam
Choi
Stephens
Maine
Elan and Carter

The order could be different, but Jackson, Choi and Stephens went before Maine, and Elan probably went afterwards. Why? Because "Third phase partially successful. Subject 20% integrated with site infrastructure; 15% with SSO Carter." tells me that someone (and elan is the only one not mentioned by Maine) came back. Carter is getting a prosthetic, so I assume there was some sort of teleporting accident.

Perhaps Ian is the first name of one of the soldiers.

::working on putting the document in chronological order, since I can't program to save my life::

Just a thought--if the girls need access to Lab 7 on level 4, this document might have a way in, through Chadwick:

{ extrapolated: badge {line 16} extracted }
{ lab system 7; active badge interrogated, passed }
{ extrapolated: badge {line 16} extracted }
{ lab system 7; active badge interrogated, passed }

// labeled A;
// triangulated location mapped; entry
// passive badge { present }
// badge query { chadwick, f {885ea} }

// labeled A;
// triangulated location mapped; exit
// passive badge { present }
// badge query { chadwick, f {885ea} }

After looking at it some more, I've broken the remaining text into some fairly arbitrary categories.

First, stuff that looks programming related (worth getting Kurt to take a look at?)

Quote:
// not yet reviewed

// 35% negative emotional state

// not yet reviewed

// 85% negative emotional state

// labeled A;
// triangulated location mapped; entry
// passive badge { present }
// badge query { chadwick, f {885ea} }

// labeled A;
// triangulated location mapped; exit
// passive badge { present }
// badge query { chadwick, f {885ea} }

f8080:xx95034

{ extrapolated: badge {line 16} extracted }
{ extrapolated: badge {line 16} extracted }

Mail errors, this sequence appears twice:

Quote:
internal error bourgmail
criticalerror 420
error-authconflict
error-redirect
error-handover
error-output
fatal-close

Stuff related to Geopositioning:

Quote:
Geopositioning and visual evidence indicates accuracy +/-10m. Vertical plane +5m.
Geopositioning indicates accuracy to within 1.5km on horizontal plane.
Geopositioning and visual evidence indicates accuracy +/-10m. Vertical plane -1m.
Geopositioning and visual evidence indicates accuracy +/-10m.
Geopositioning indicates accuracy +/- 1km. Verticals unclear.
Geopositioning and visual evidence indicates accuracy +/-50m. Vertical plane 0m.
Geopositioning signal faint and intermittent. Estimated accuracy +/-500km. Signal lost after 95secs.

Some random bits, I think the second line probably belongs to the mail to Sente. SK is presumably Sente.

Quote:
Master in attendence.

This is not a decision to be taken lightly. I will comply with your judgement on the matter, though I urge you to authorise the new stage.

[Recommend application for funding extension.]

Tau-Seven authorised.

[Progress noted and submitted to SK.]

Lab 7 stuff:

Quote:
<Lab 7, L4> is repeated 8 times through the file, as I thought, and also:
{ lab system 7; active badge interrogated, passed }, is in there twice

The remaining text appears to relate to the experiments on both dogs and people, with 1st 2nd and 3rd phase data indicating variable degrees of success and (in many cases fatal) failure. I haven't really picked out what I think belongs exactly where in this lot yet, I'm sure by the time I come back to this tomorrow someone will have put it into a sequence Smile

I also think that we shouldn't ignore the non-text data, but I can't see any clue as to what to do with it Confused

I can't seem to download the hex version of the file...

I've this problem with Scarlet's site, some things just aren't there. Can anyone attach an unaltered version of the hex version?

This is the way I'm reading these experiments:

There are four dogs mentioned in the experiments; three are docile going in to phase one, one is agitated. The first experiment has phase one *appearing* successful, the other three are successful.
Five people are mentioned, four reporting confidence going in and one reporting readiness. Phase One is apparentely completely successfully for each major.

Whoever is conducting the experiments notes EM interference and if my counting is right, the discovery is made during the first Laika experiment and eight subsequent experiments have a gamma shield so that "EM interference is negligible." That leaves one experiment with something other than negligible EM interference (poor Major Maine).

The Geopositioning seems to get more accurate but also hints that some subjects (Maine again) pretty much go off the radar and can't be tracked.

Conclusion: Phase one is the initial "dissolution" and some sort of teleportation, with each experimentee getting closer to target.

I think phase two is the literal movement of the experimentee:
"Audio evidence suggests subject remains in phase two. Unconfirmed."
Maine said that one of his comrades turned in to steam, and they could still hear him screaming. It fits with "audio evidence." ::shudder::

Phase three is the return to the original lab. Again, if I'm counting correctly, there are two "lost" subjects whose whereabouts were never ascertained. Of the ones who did return, the rather ominous comments of "65% reconstitution" and "40% integrated with site infrastructure" make it pretty clear that most didn't survive. Again, this fits with Maine's comment about Stephens coming back "in the wall."

There is one success: "Third phase successful. 100% reconstitution resolves in Unit 6a, Level 3." So maybe the girls need to find the lab, or maybe they need to find Unit 6a.

That's pretty much all the spec I pulled about the experiments themselves.

I knocked up a quick bit of code to extract the GIF data from the file...

The result is...

Well well well... lookie at that number!

Not sure if my code went wrong and corrupted the end of the graphic or if it's originally like that. Sad

I viewed the source file, and there were some sections with line breaks in them that do not appear like that when you just view the page:

Quote:
internal error bourgmail
criticalerror 420
error-authconflict
error-redirect
error-handover
error-output
fatal-close

// triangulated location mapped; entry
// passive badge { present }
// badge query { chadwick, f {885ea} }

:: start 657602 +000000
:: archive location { dev 19 }
:: index { no }
:: retention { 1 }
:: processing time { 0.39 }
:: ȋhǙ<Lab>w9"I'9M%rU)٨]!{ lab system 7;
active badge interrogated, passed }

// triangulated location mapped; exit
// passive badge { present }
// badge query { chadwick, f {885ea} }

:: start 657989 +000000
:: archive location { dev 19 }
:: index { no }
:: retention { 1 }
:: processing time { 0.39 }
::JڡAs you are aware, a great deal of progress has been made in recent weeks. Phase one has been securely established and geotargeting is increasing in accuracy

internal error bourgmail
criticalerror 420
error-authconflict

error-handover
error-output
fatal-close

I bolded a section that looked important

I think the repeated use of the word dissolution - "Dissolution complete" etc - is interesting, because of CT (http://www.perplexcityacademy.com/libraryofbabel/dissolution). It all links in somehow, by God!

I'm not really very informed on technical matters, but I was thinking about what CT said about piling words up and getting their meaning; is there some sort of method to do with layering that we could apply to the symbols? Again I don't know if this is possible (computers are still quite a mystery to me... I still have a SNES....) but just a thought.

I haven't looked at the file yet (I'm just now getting off of a crazy day at work), but it might be interesting to note the original Laika--basically an experimental dog that the Russians shot into space. She was the first living creature in orbit (...that we know of, at least, maybe some aliens predated her, but we won't talk about that here...) She. Um. Sort of didn't survive up there very long because the temperature control system failed. Nobody really talked about that last part for a decade.

This makes me wonder if they're randomly snatching dogs from Earth and bringing them to Perplex City. Has anyone lost a dog recently? Wink

Had an idea. I started removing all the text in the temp file. I thought that mabye the solid black lines could make a pattern (I've seen this kind of thing before.) I'll update when it's done.

just on a pointless sidenote to brians the first object in space was a manhole cover from wene america was doing atomic testing in the sewer pipes of some desert
yeah it was one of the first sucsesfuly atomic explosions (dont quote me on that im not sure)
anyway this reminded me of ct talking of steaming manholes as wene a large bomb set of a sewer ther would be steam
what this has to do with the curent discussion is absoulty nothing but id thoght id say it Very Happy

Very interesting..... Do you mind explaining how you extracted that data?

No problem... I looked at the file and noticed it contained a GIF header (GIF89a with a PXC timestamp and lab reference in the middle). I wrote a little program to strip out a given list of strings from a binary file and write out the remaining binary part. There were a few bits left (such as the strings with line breaks in them) which I cleaned out by hand.

I've taken another look at the file and there seems to be corruption around 350 bytes into the GIF file. It doesn't seem to be text data that's been missed, so the original GIF may be corrupted.

Here's the code for those interested:
Code:
#include <stdio>
#include <stdlib>

int main(int argc, char* argv) {
        char data[10898];
        unsigned int size = 10898;

        FILE *f = fopen("temporaryfile.bin","rb");
        fread(data, 10898, 1, f);
        close(f);

        FILE *s = fopen("strings.txt","r");
        char line[1024];
        while(fgets(line, 1024, s)) {
                printf("Stripping: %s",line);
                int linelen = strlen(line)-1;
                char *pos = (char*)memmem(data, size, line, linelen);
                if(pos) {
                        printf("Found at %4x!\n", (pos-data));
                        memmove(pos, pos+linelen, size-((pos-data)+linelen));
                        size -= linelen;
                }
        }
        close(s);

        FILE *o = fopen("output.gif","wb");
        fwrite(data, size, 1, o);
        close(o);

        return EXIT_SUCCESS;
}
