good work Anthrax101 and BrianEnigma, Guess I woke up a bit late to help :)

so you did have to %256 all the unicode, then xor with the texel.zip offset by one char? as in texel[i] ^ texelzip[i+1] ?

So is this a first first-hand experience of a "whomp"? Would this be directly related to a "spike". Maybe Texel took pictures. Now that would be cool.

Awesome Job!!!

if only texel had metadex, then he could post them when he stops being hurt in the g_

Going off the way that message finishes, I'm not all that sure we'll be hearing from Texel again... quite possibly, Tex will be the next one on heismissing...

This is truly scary stuff... I think that Beth can count her lucky stars all she wound up with was AI Man...

Texel said that the whomp started early - maybe that's why Beth missed it.

Sorry to ask, but can someone give the steps, with examples, of how this was solved? Pretty please? Very Happy

Hmm, Elmview, GA is still on the line ... a fair bit further west than I would have expected ... and assuming this happened on Saturday, November 8th, then my weekday timing model no longer fits the data. Of course, I'm also assuming here that a whomp and the paranormal events are two manifestations of the same thing ... but we've got more than a few hints that they are. The spatial model does suggest the next event should be somewhere east of Alabama, so it had to be Georgia.

I'm not sure what you mean by that ...

Wow...that's pretty scary. Poor Texel, I liked him. Well, anyway, I'm happy that the other hackers didn't all abandon Caesar...I was feeling sorry for him. Bounce, Random, and Texel are all on his side again...well, Texel may not be around to stay on his side, but...

So now we know that the whomps are actually glitches, as picked up by computer networks, is that right? I mean, there was spec that they may be traces left by the Metacortex AI while it was searching or something, but now that seems not to be the case, unless the AI is causing the glitches by overloading the Matrix or something.

Did anyone ever try to chronologically arrange the paintover crew's whomps and Beth's anomalies?

BTW, I have no idea what an XOR even is, but all that matters is that you guys do. Very Happy I'm very impressed...

I think the Unicode was a mistake--either on the part of the PM's or on the part of Texel. Wink It looks like Movable Type automatically translated the control characters to Unicode. Why there were so many 0x01 - 0x32 codes kind of makes sense now--when XOR'ing between different characters in the alphabet, only the least significant bits are really going to be different. Anyway, no the Unicode was not even touched once the zip file was presented. The full code is here, but you are really only going to be interested in the translate() function at the bottom--the rest is just building datastructures and me playing around with possible encryption schemes.

i thought i meant the email that beth sent to katgirl about missing an event - but that was back on 10/29.

XOR is the only thing I understood in the solve, at least I think I understood it. It is a "One Time Pad Cypher" I think Confused You guys are awesome in how you solve these things...Thanks

Heh, I know as much about "One Time Pad Cyphers" as I do about XORs, but don't worry about trying to explain it to me. I'm perfectly happy to sit this one out and cheer from the sidelines while the experienced programming and cryptography people do their thing. Go, team, go! Mr. Green

Murpha

This just something that I was thinking about, with Texel mentioning a single story brick building turning into a 20 story steel and glass, could murpha be using "the matrix" to construct it's buildings? Maybe a new location for another MetaCortex building?

I am once more baffled by your creativity, congrats to Anthrax and all the others on cracking this. It makes me feel less sad all the action happened when I was sound asleep, because I don't think I could have contributed a lot anyway Wink

Storywise, I have a bit of speculation though:

Could Texel be Jesse? He's sounding like we won't see him again, and at the same time, the Nekodas post a picture of missing Jesse on their site...

to the naked eye whomp is less anomaly, more automated.

This is interesting. Instead of the anomalies being glitches in the matrix, texel implies that these are purposeful changes or reboots.

When Texel gets a glimpse of the steel and glass building, perhaps he is getting a glimpse of the area from where the whomp originates. Sounds like metacortechs to me.

However, taking a look the previous whomps, they resulted in silly glitchy things - like a horse trapped in foggy ice.

But, perhaps from the "hacker" perspective, he was seeing things that are others cannot.

Good job solving this guys! Impressive!
