Thinking back to the MySpace line of thought...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Has anybody tried to enter the MySpace URI as a solve? Or perhaps just the 8-digit number portion? (61454193)

Didn't really understand that, but tried it and it's not correct.

Hi all

"Japan Society North West" is organising "Japan Day" in Manchester on 21 Oct (Sat) 11:00 - 17:00. (Great Hall, Manchester Town Hall : Admission free)
This society is part of Northwest England Japanese Companies Association and most of the Japanese companies in the Northwest are the members. (There are a huge number of Japanese people in the Northwest)

This Japan Day is to introduce Japanese culture, such as samurai armor, taiko drumming, kendo, origami, haiku, manga and many more.

I don't know how many Japanese people will be there and I don't expect our satoshi will be there. But if you are living near Manchester and have nothing to do on that day, why don't you visit? Who knows Satoshi may be there.....

Also you can enter a raffle for two flight tickets to Japan.

Here is the website, if anybody is interested.

Hey TC, if you're going how about giving out some leaflets? We're knocking up some to give out in London just before CubeFest - so I could email you the file to print and give out, or could send you some ready-printed.

Not to be cynical about this...

I really think the current bill-2-one project is very unlikely to yield fruit in its current form. The current posters and leaflets suggest, I think, to the random passerby that its really not that important to find the guy, certainly not if the only information being put on it is just that the guy is "Wanted" (a word which, with the cash reward, sends I feel the wrong message). Its such an unmemorable thing that its very unlikely that anyone will take it seriously. The second problem I think is that few people then have any incentive to donate to a cash reward fund like this, for the obvious reason that, once the answer is found, people who have given nothing will have equal access to it, and for the second that there is no reward goal level (like, I dunno, say US$1000 or something) and no guarantee that the guy will ever be found. The problem, in short, is a lack of incentive to participate on all sides.
I think a more thorough ad is in order therefore. One that approaches this as a 6degrees social experiment with the reward going to whoever manages to find the guy. "Know this guy? Tell us so. Not? Pass the ad off to whoever you think probably would and share in the reward." Suggests to the random reader a minimum of effort and a reasonably high return, and hell maybe even a little fun, for simply passing a flyer off. Or Newspaper ad, which I again suggest is in order, certainly starting in the Kaysersberg Gazette-Sun-Times-Tribune-Picayune or whatever it is. More likely to get a return, and with a focused area like that, advertising costs might be minimized.
As far as getting more people to contribute, I have three words: Pledge-Drive Swag. Can set up a CafePress shop for that kind of thing, contribute $10 get a PXC totebag, $25 gets a T-shirt ("I gave away hard-earned money to help find one random Japanese dude and all I got was this lousy T-shirt") kind of thing. Easiest way I think, and certainly provides donation incentive. People'll do anything for a T-shirt what says they participated.

Re: Not to be cynical about this...

A few people have bought up using "WANTED", yes, it's not ideal but it's the most appropriate word. We want to find him, i.e. he's wanted. The most important thing for a headline is to be short, snappy, catch the reader's attention and make them curious enough to read more. I think wanted fits the bill better than anything else anyone's mentioned so far. The alternative is "MISSING" but that doesn't really fit.

Anyway, I did have a goal of £1000/$2000 which I mentioned in an earlier post, but didn't want to advertise the amount on the site in case he's found before the target is reached and I'd feel compelled to fork out to cover the difference.

The problem is it's not really something the average joe can get excited about. I've tried explaining to lots of people what we're trying to do and most of them think it's at best crazy, if not, a complete waste of time. If you start mentioning small world theory/six-degrees, they instantly switch off. Mind you, that was before there was any mention of a reward - people I talk to now seem to warm to the idea much more! Wink

A new page could certainly be added explaining things a bit more for those who are interested - and I'm working on a press release which goes some way to address that.

It's a long term challenge (I'm expecting at least a year) and we'll keep tweaking things to find what works best over time.

I do like the cafe-press idea (in fact I've made myself a t-shirt for this weekend's flyering). The problem last time I looked is that they are rather pricey (especially if you ship to the UK). Plus they only paid in US$ which seriously sucks into the income if cashed outside the US. Nothing to stop someone setting one up though *hint hint* Smile

Hm..

Was just thinking about the logistics of the cafepress approach (discount on bulk orders, switching to Zazzle or another similar service, possible cost cutting for non-profit activity, etc.) and a thought struck me. Lets presume that Mind Candy wants us to work this out the most obvious way, by geting the image to everyone we can. By extension theyre endorsing having their fans promote their product, with the possible net positive result of solving the very last and otherwise unsolvable card.
I dont know if this is even the place to ask quite this question, but is it legally possible to set up a sort of "Perplex Fan Store" that doesnt sell the official PXC stuff but Fanworks? Like I dont know, the Tshirt I mentioned, "Ask me about THE CUBE" Buttons, "Rational Pirate" Ballcaps and other stuff. Could use the bulk of profits to build the reward fund, take out ads, other costs to finding the guy. Any idea who we'd have to ask about that at MC? What else could be sold? etc.

I admit I haven't read the entire thread, but have people posted in /. etc.

I imagine it might get an OK response on slightly higher brow social networking sites, who may appreciate that it's a really interesting idea/problem.

Just adding to the madness
another website

Hi all..
New to the forum, new to the game (still waiting on my parcel from the UK for my first set of cards).

I've been trying to read everything and come in as a "third party" that hasn't seen or experienced all the searching for Mr. B21.

Found this websitewith a map of the Kaysersberg area, for what it is worth.

http://216.109.124.98/babelfish/translate_url_content?lp=fr_en&trurl=http%3a%2f%2fwww.ville-kaysersberg.fr%2fplan.html

Kinda gives you an idea of what the area looks like.

Please don't fish me... I tried searching across the 29 pages and didn't see this yet.

No chance of fish - nice spot Bit1313.
Just a shame that the map doesn't have "Satoshi was here" on it!!
Or Satoshi can be contacted at....
Or the answer you're looking for is......

the map does give names to specific buildings.

the map does give names to specific buildings.

Its possible the name of that bridge or the building behind it may lead us to a further clue?

has anyone tried those as answers? I mean im sure we tried Kayserberg.

But perhaps the name of those locations are important in the scheme of the puzzle.

Some more thoughts...
A wandering mind wants to know...

So here are some thoughts that I have had:

1) Has anyone tried talking to someone in Kaysersberg (i.e. make a friend) and see if we can get them to help? I'm thinking in the tourism department or city government even. (I would assume that we would need someone who speaks/writes French)

2) Not sure how "international" the site is, but what about employing the help of www.snopes.com (the urban legends page). They report on missing people / chain mail topics all the time (people asking if little Sally Smith is really missing per the email they were sent, etc) Could we get them to put a post in their archieve explaining "Yes - this person is "missing" and here is the story" That site is pretty widely visited I would think. I don't want to close off the idea to just www.snopes.com. What sites can you think of that are WIDELY viewed (nationally and internationally)... those could be places we need to post information.

3) What about media? I keep thinking of "Attack of the Show" on G4TV (again, not sure how international that is). With all the technolgy, games and pop culture on that show, it would be a perfect place to plead our case to the "world" I also wonder if CNNs playful side would be interested in such a story.

http://www.cnn.com/exchange/ireports/topics/index.html

Again - I have not been nearly as involved as 99.9% of the people here, but those are my thoughts.

?????????????????

Sent Email to www.snopes.com
Urban Legend Page

Here is my meger attempt at helping. I have sent the following email to the editors at the Urban Legends website (www.snopes.com). Whatcha think? Couldn't hurt. I guess it couldn't hurt if we all found any sites that we could get something posted to (I know a lot of you have been doing this.. so any other site ideas would be great). Think high profile, high traffic.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Snopes editors,
Hello. My name is Gene Homan and I am one of several thousand players in a game called "Perplex City" (think perplexity). (www.perplexcity.com)
In this Alice in Wonderland meets the Matrix style adventure players are pitted against puzzles and mysteries that have them doing anything from solving simple riddles to traveling to other cities and interacting with other players.
There are 256 distinct challenges (printed on collectable cards) to the game. One of which, called "Billion to One", features the picture of an oriental man in a town. The town appears to be Kaysersberg in the Alsace region of France. There is Japanese text on the card, that roughly translated to say "Find me". We have been given the hint that his name is SATOSHI.
The team thinks that this is a six degrees of separation style quest. We were wondering if you could possibly post the information about the quest and the following website: www.billion2one.org . Your site seemed to be a perfect place for this "urban legend" and "chain mail" kind of quest.
Thank you for your time and consideration. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Most sincerely,
Gene Homan
I believe the preferred term to "oriental" is "Asian" when referring to a person. Just for future reference.
