How long

How long do we have to go?

The answer is definitely 'a while'

We are currently down to about 80000 WU's per day.

We have about 6 million WU's to run in phase I - so thats another 75 days.

We have 20 million Phase II WU's to process. The good news about them is they run in approx 1/3 the time, so let us be generous and say we would do 250000 Phase II WU's per day - that gives us up to 80 days of that.

Therefore we are looking at approximately 150 days to complete the current chose work space.

 Focusing the attack

Thanks very much for the update Chimera.

So units run in phase I are [A-Za-z0-9.,!? ] in the top half and [A-Za-z0-9] in the lower half, and units run in phase II have [A-Za-z0-9.,!? ] in the lower half.

I would think that the most likely location for the punctuation characters is in the lower half.

How far away are we from the release of the phase II client?

I think we should focus our efforts on the phase I uppers with the phase II lowers, i.e work units with [A-Za-z0-9] and the client trying [A-Za-z0-9.,!? ].

So that's the 14.7 Million phase I work units being re-processed with the phase II lowers. Using the same rate of 250000 work units per day we'd exhaust that subset of the key space in 59 days. (62^4 / 250000).

If the processing of those work units is 3 times faster then I think the server should be handing out 30 work units, or more, at a time.

What do you think?

Cheers,
Mark

Not more than a couple of weeks - I just want to get the testing right.

I agree with you btw - that the most likely success will come in Phase II.

Server Upgrades

I have just completed porting the back end to SQL Server 2005.

This should improve performance considerably - as the clapped out copy of SQL Server 2000 it was running on before was not long for this earth.

I took the main Web and DBMS Server down last night to upgrade memory, and the beast refused to boot back up Sad

I will try again this morning to see what's up - but it may be that I have to establish a new server.

While I do have quite a few resources available they are finite as this is my own personal gear I am using - so for now I am afraid 13th Labour is down until I can re-establish the server.

Sorry for the pause.

Good luck - have been in similar situations in my previous incarnation as a server admin - fingers crossed you can sort it out without too much grief

Cheers now

Who needed that stupid motherboard anyway.

Bad news is the AGP slot is fried - I was (as well as adding more memory) removing the unwanted super spec graphics card that the web server doth not need and replacing it with a new one last night when doo-doo occurred.

Good news is I have sourced a new Motherboard with a faster CPU (Pentium D 2.8Ghz ) and 2 Gb of DDR2 RAM for a reasonable price - so with a bit of luck we will be cooking with gas once more tomorrow.

Sorry again about the short pause.

Thanks Chimera, I'm sure we all appreciate the resources you are putting into this project.

I've sent a donation via the 13thlabour website. I hope that finds it's way to you, and I also hope that many others donate as well to help you keep this herculean effort alive.

Cheers,
Mark

Good News

The replacement Web and DBMS Server is under construction as we speak. I managed to salvage the processor (PIV 2.7), memory, NIC and other bits from it - so a new dedicated server is on it's way - and will hopefully be ready next week.

I'm putting a better M/b in it - and faster disks - and more to the point as it has to be rebuilt it will have Windows 2003 Server as the O/S instead of XP - getting round those annoying simultaneous connections issues.

This lot will probably not be ready until next week though - so I'm going to nag my major shareholder (and mother of the backups) into letting me use her EVE machine.

Watch this space - but we may be cooking with gas once again this evening.

Could the key be a telephone number? If so, the first character may be "+", which is not in the new search space. It's probably too late to adjust the current setup, but it may be something to consider for a phase 3, if necessary.

When I start up the client now I get the following message went it attempts to validate:
'Received Shutdown Message from Client - Exiting'

Is there a new client version or something else I need to do?

Update

Hi all - update here.

I cranked up an emergency server last night - my partner's games machine to be exact - and almost immediately it all but collapsed under the load.

This is mainly because I hadn't had chance to tinker with all the settings to get the thing running in a sustainable manner.

I set the server to 'tell the clients to bugger off mode' while I did some tinkering - but unfortunately (it was about 1am) forgot to turn it off.

I *think* I have got a configuration which will get you through until I pick up the new dedicated server next week - fingers crossed.

Thanks again for your patience

Are you managing to fit your "normal" life in at the moment?
(Or is this your normal life?) Smile

It's been trying to load for about an hour now... maybe we should wait for the replacement server? Crying or Very sad

Good luck again...
Cabs Mr. Green

Edit - it did one unit (eventually), now it is waiting for server response (PS I am in no way complaining - this is just for your information...)
