[SOLVED] HHR to meet Barney Sept 5th?
- cipher posted on Ben's Flickr, was in HHR's files.

We have a puzzle. Posted on Ben's Flickr for "friends" to see.

The phone number is the same as left for Ben by "Cathy Kuttner" who claimed to be Dwin's mom and was planning to go to the Santa Monica High School to speak to someone about Dwin on Friday. According to Google, that phone number turns out to be a payphone outside a Kwik Mart at a Union 76 Gas Station at 9801 W. Pico, West Los Angeles.

Bottom of the page, Happy's handwriting wrote:
Barney - 2:00 pm Sept 5th
310-858-9007
white rose

[edit - since Ben's disappearence on 10/14 the photo has been removed from the Flickr page]

Here's a transcription I've been working from, with letters substituted for characters. I have been liberal in separating out characters - for example, there might be one or two double-cross symbols, one with a split in the middle and another without. The line breaks are arbitrary.
Code:
abcxozqamjnaqvrmabanvacrwa
xruqcpabcvlpmymaeepyyvpqar
kfyqcvrcvrzsabcqmpcqxxpbqf
ypkgplpabcvjqkxazurblzmeur
ybcrlaepbvpamjcpvhvrqmpagc

Possibly a simple substitution cipher. Note the recurring abc's ("the")? Just starting to look at this. Here's the letter frequency table:

A: 23
B: 18
C: 23
D: 0
E: 4
F: 2
G: 3
H: 2
I: 1
J: 8
K: 7
L: 7
M: 15
N: 4
O: 3
P: 19
Q: 15
R: 14
S: 1
T: 1
U: 7
V: 15
W: 1
X: 10
Y: 9
Z: 12

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
i went ahead and did my own symbol to letter substitution and got this:

abcdefgaheiagjkhabaicacgkladkmg
cnabcjonhphaqqnppjngakrspgcjkcj
kftabcghncgddnbgspnrunonabcjegr
dafmkbofhqmkpbckoaqnbjnahecnj
vjkghnaucewefbccdnbgbgkhefd
rjkdnchfmkbcefuchebjepkmnabchno
rfgcjxjadaabcviahorfhacnmpjna
bcbgemirfgpdhfo

couldn't get anything meaningful so on a hunch, reversed the text and worked with this:

ofhdpgfrimegbcbanjpmncahf
rohaivcbaadajxjcgfronhcba
nmkpejbehcufecbkmfhcndkjr
dfehkgbgbndccbfewecuanhgk
jvjncehanjbnqaokcbpkmqhfo
bkmfadrgejcbanonurnpsgbnd
dgcnhgcbatfkjckjcgpsrkagn
jppnqqahphnojcbancgmkdalk
gcaciabahkjgaiehagfedcba

simple substitution gives:

worldsofcmushtheandmatero
fwrecktheelenqntsofwarthe
amidunhurtyouthimortalinf
lourishshaltthoubutyearsi
nknatureanhagewithdimgrow
himoelfsuntheawayfadvshal
lstarsthepointintsdvfiesa
nddaggerdrawntheatsmilexi
stetceherinsecuresoulthe

too lazy to clean up my original symbol to letter sub but there are enough words to make sense out of it. reading from the end ("the soul secure in her existence...") there are enough words in there to google, giving:

"The soul secure in her existence smiles at the drawn dagger and defies its point. The stars shall fade away, the sun himself grow dim with age and nature sink in years, but thou shalt flourish in immortal youth, unhurt amid the war of elements, the wreck of matter and the crush of worlds."

It was part of Edgar Allan Poe's crypto challenge (see this page, about half way down: http://www.bokler.com/eapoe.html). I thought it looked kinda familiar! could've saved myself some time... Razz

This is a (yet another) fantastic solve, but so.. the cipher was what? Busywork? And the real information is the fact that Barney went to white rose meeting on Sept 5?

Betty comments on the cipher

I reposted the picture from Ben (since it is missing from his site) in order for Betty to see it (but I marked it Private so Mr AJ and his spoocheeeee jackals couldn't see it). She left this comment:

Betty wrote:
heather, that is poe but it isn't from that website.. it is from barney's favorite book "secret codes and cryptograms" by elonka dunin. this was like his favorite cipher for whatever reason anyone would have a favorite cipher... i will find the page for you guys. i do remember it is from some crazy old play. that date september 5th is 2 days before we went back to ny and 3 days before barney went missing at st. barts. why did happy have this? and what up with the white rose?
betty

Cato by Addison

The "crazy old play" that the deciphered quote comes from is "Cato" by Joseph Addison written back in 1713.

Hmm, Addison is also the name of one of The Five. I wonder if there's a connection.

Betty added another comment on the Cipher Photo

From Flickr comment:

Betty wrote:
that cipher translates to a quote from a play by someone named joseph addison. more later

Guess we are looking in the right direction.

FYI, it is in Elonka's book at page 420. Only thing on the page (except some introductory text).
