[UPDATE] Sentinel - 17 October 06 - Camryn Scott Ousted

Scott Fails Vote of Confidence, Election Moved Up
By CORINNE HATHAWAY

Council Leader Camryn Scott received a stunning vote of no confidence late yesterday afternoon following an all-day closed session of the City Council. As a result, the upcoming election for Council Leader has been moved forward and will now take place on Wednesday, 18 October. The vote comes after yesterday's revelations that the Academy has been conducting highly unethical experiments into dangerous wartime technologies using human subjects. According to documentation provided by the Master of the Academy's daughters, both Master Sente Kiteway and Camryn Scott knew about the program and personally approved and ran it.

Scott gave a brief press speech this morning addressing the vote and the brewing scandal. "Yes, there is a program at Viendenbourg, and it has used human volunteers for experimentation resulting in some loss of life," she admitted. "However, I assure you that all of the brave young men whose lives have been lost in this effort have been volunteers, and were very clear on the risks they were shouldering. ... I have served the city faithfully and have done nothing out of the scope of my position and responsibilities. I hope that the voters of Perplex City keep this in mind when they submit their ballots on Wednesday." Scott refused to take questions from the press following her address.

Council Member Nathan Earlywine clearly stands to benefit from the scandal, as popular opinion is sure to swing toward backing him. He refused to comment on the exact proceedings of the council's closed session, however, nor on how it will affect his odds in the election on Wednesday.

The political move uses a little-known clause in the city's founding charter providing the opportunity for a swift restructuring of the government when the existing leader's administration has become too troubled to continue to govern. The so-called Yancy Clause can only be invoked by a unanimous vote of the City Council and all of the sitting judges on the city's High Court. Although the measure has been voted on in the past, most notably in 187 at the height of the Rose Crescent Affair, it has never before carried.

It is not yet clear whether Kiteway and Scott will be prosecuted for their roles in the scandal. "We need to shed some sunlight on this situation and find out for sure what is going on," said High Court Justice Georgia Fenton. "I suspect we will see the matter before a grand jury by the end of the year."

Interesting, looks like we should know by the end of the day who is going to replace Cameron.

I wonder how strong Sente's position is in the Academy. Anyone got any idea on what it would take to shift him?

Probably a vote of no confidence like with Scott among the faculty or an official letter requesting him to "retire" from the council.

But I guess it depends on how much the staff at the academy like him

This would certainly seem to hand Earlywine control of City Council. What impact would that have on our link to the City?

What does Earlywine stand to gain from his actions, other than leadership of the Council? Is he a more significant player than we think he is??

I think any public position would be untenable in the current situation. I see Earlywine as opportunistic, but I suppose he could be there to stir up trouble. The real question is why Sente and Scott are conducting the tests? Scott has not denied it, so there has got to be a strong motivation.

I think Sente had this planned, he knew what his daughters were looking into, we've had knowing winks and nods throughout (such as in the mines with Kurt) and he knew that the allegations would be most effective coming from those closest to him. I believe he wishes to highlight the reasons why Viendenbourg is a necessity and that this is the only way to make it public without being foiled by the 3P, who are within the academy and presumably throughout other organisations, like the council, police force etc.

Whose side would you take if we were contacted by Sente?

It would certainly have been quite machiavelian of Sente to have the information brought to light by his own daughters. It would certainly go a long way towards convincinghis opponents that he had nothing to hide, which would lend credence to his assertions that the experiments were necessary.

What doesn't fit, however, is why he would, in doing so, hand over city council to Earlywine? I haven't processed that part quite yet... Is he planning to out some information about Earlywine's role in some of this, or some other activities which he may wish to keep quiet? In short, could Sente be falling on his own sword in order to force something out of Earlywine??

I think Earlywine will prove rubbish enough that he will only be in office for a short time and that this goes beyond leadership of the council. That's a small sacrifice really.

There is a further thing that Sente would have accomplished if he did indeed engineer this situation and that would be to lend credence to his daughters and anything else that they happened to discover later (like the existence of the 3P and a nice big list of their names, adresses, inside-leg measurements and the location of the flippin' cube). In a way it also protects them from the 3P. Perhaps their investigations were starting to cause alarm and now this will have given an excuse for them?

Excellent point, Mikeyj. I should've seen that too!

This will certainly gain the Kiteway women a certain notoriety and a definite ironclad air of impartiality. Needless to say, SCarlett may yet secure herself a post on the Sentinel!

I wonder what view they will have taken of their father's actions after this?

Distrust I imagine, theyve had their view of their dad shattered by this.

MikeyJ to be honest I wouldnt trust Sente if he was to openly appeal to us for further help. He sent us on this hunt and then we hardly hear anything from him, fueling distrust. This Viendenbourg incident just confirms for me how much we shouldnt trust him.

you know, I'm actually okay with using live humans fFor testing purposes. They have escalated fFrom inert objects, to dogs, to people. Circumstances being what they are, there was a need fFor expediency. We know nothing about those volunteers or how they were briefed or compensated. I'm prepared to accept the fFact that with great technology comes great risk.

What I am not okay with is the need fFor secrecy. Sente's message openly admits he was hiding all sorts of information fFrom us. Why? He doesn't say. He simply paints a bold picture of the bravery of those who have laid down their lives. Bunk! Everyone knows -- EVERYONE knows -- the academy is working on a way to transport materials. the secret lab's location is, obviously, Secret -- but THIS is how we fFind out about it? I fFeel like I've been cheated on by a very lying unfaithful and occaisonally murderous boyfriend.

There certainl;y is that feeling of distrust, to be sure. But I cannot help feeling like there's something missing. There are too many things makin him look guilty there has to be something we're not seeing...

Sorry, I was just watching LOST last night... Wink
