[UPDATE] Sentinel - 16 Oct 06 - Wartime Tech Trials
Viendenbourg Revealed to Press

Quote:

Academy, Scott Implicated in Human Trials of Wartime Tech

By IONA RODIE

The Academy has been conducting experiments in illegal technologies resulting in loss of human life in a little-known war-era city called Viendenbourg, according to information provided to the Sentinel by the daughters of Master of the Academy Sente Kiteway. Among the documentation provided was evidence that strongly suggests a budget request for the program was approved by Council Leader Camryn Scott herself.

According to documents acquired by the Master's daughters, Violet and Scarlett Kiteway, at least five human subjects and a number of canines were subjected to some form of teleportation experiment at Viendenbourg, an historical outpost in the Tanraga district. All five ended with the loss or death of the human subject. These experiments were conducted under the auspices and supervision of Sente Kiteway himself, who personally gave approval for human subjects to be used, the documents say.

The evidence gathered by the Kiteway women fails to specify the exact nature of these experiments nor their purpose, though some are speculating that they are related to the ongoing effort to recover the missing Receda Cube. Indeed, further information provided by the younger Kiteways seems to suggest the the Cube was fabricated at a secret Academy lab located in the Lancewood Archipelago under the direction of Academy Master Vianne Adamek -- and that the Cube was intended as a global-scale weapon. The tests described in these historic documents bear a disturbing similarity to this secret program.

"I feel like it's a terrible betrayal of my father to be telling you all of this," said a subdued Scarlett Kiteway, "but we feel it's important that the city know what's going on. ... No, we don't want to be anonymous. If we feel strongly enough about this to talk at all, then we need to face the consequences."

"I am horrified to learn that we are endangering lives in pursuit of technologies that were part of such a dark time in our city's history," said Council Member Nathan Earlywine, who is campaigning to win the Council Leader post in the October 27 elections. "I can assure you we on the City Council will be addressing this in session on Monday."

As of this writing, the council has been in closed session since late this morning.

City Grows Dimmer on Leaderboard Stars

By KATE BREWSTER

Following a recent resurgence of leaderboard fever in Perplex City, Perplexian attitudes to the Earth puzzle contest have cooled to permafrost levels this week, following the denouncement of Earth's cultural mores by Nathan Earlywine.

Joey Griffiths, of consultancy Fraction Media, described the phenomenon as "somewhat surprising." He said: "Earlywine is traditionally seen to be catering to a core audience of mature voters, but our in-the-field research is showing a degree of disillusionment across the board. We're more used to seeing the youth zeitgeist posed oppositely to that of their elders, but this is not the case here. Instead, we're seeing a backlash originating from the counter-cultural perspective of young 'thought leaders,' who've been tiring of Earth-related media for some time, coinciding with a similar mood shift in the senior demographic, albeit for more conservative reasons."

Indeed, when a random sample of 684 citizens were queried on their attitudes towards Earth, and the leaderboard in particular, only 18% characterised their feelings as "intrigued; curiously tingly" while 31% described their opinion as "the embodiment of apathy." 22% said they felt "nausea, ennui, and a singularly terrifying emptiness" about the matter.

Jana Westfield, 16, a student at Borfield School, said: "Recently, it just leaves me cold. So very, very cold. ... Truly, a leaderboard replete with idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Of course, paraphrasing an Earthly playwright only adds to the hollow feeling inside," she sighed, her eyes focusing on nothing in particular.

Drace (whose information-free profile only contributes to Perplex City's new-found emotional alienation) is this week's noteworthy new puzzler, with 1467 points, while richardjclark just about manages to raise an eyebrow with his 13773 points and 237 solves earned in just under a month.

Check back next week here at The Sentinel, for all the latest, exhausting, relentless leaderboard news, reminiscent of The Myth Of Sisyphus!

Futures

By Madame Bianca, for the week of October 16

The Dice (October 11 - November 10)
Do yourself a big favour, go out and expose yourself to a few new ideas this week. You may not feel like you're at a loss for inspiration just now, but if you don't keep a fresh flow of experience running through your synapses, you will be soon.

The Maze (November 11 - December 10)
Someone close to you is feeling a little lonely and -- dare I say -- even neglected lately. Reach out this week with a small gift and a dinner invitation, and see what you can do to make someone else's life a little better for once.

The Apple-Thief (December 11 - January 10)
'O dreary life,' we cry, ' O dreary life ! ' And still the generations of the birds sing through our sighing, and the flocks and herds serenely live while we are keeping strife.

The Hand (January 11 - February 10)
Embrace your whimsical side, doll, and give something to the universe. I can't promise you'll see any tangible results out of it, but you should at least enjoy the smug satisfaction of knowing you've made the world a better place.

The Baby (February 11 - March 10)
You need to make good chums with the freaky obsessive part of yourself. Cram your head as full as you can, because the things you don't know are so going to work against you by the end of the month.

The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
Spread those wings of yours and fly as high as you can so you can take the long view again, pumpkin. You've been too deep into things lately and become much too distracted by all that messy-but-irrelevant detail.

The Spider (April 11 - May 10)
Here's a little test for you. See if you can go an entire week without ever using two words in a row that start with the same letter. I bet you can't, it's harder than it sounds!

The Wave (May 11 - June 10)
Brace yourself for the unexpected, sunshine. The road is about to get a lot bumpier than it used to be, and despite any transient discomfort, you've still got the same destination to get to.

The Archer (June 11 - July 10)
That cousin of yours that you never really got along with makes a surprise cameo appearance in your life this week, and in a most unpleasant way. All I can say is, if you carry through on that angry impulse of yours, the whole restaurant will cheer for you.

The Half-filled Jug (July 11 - August 10)
Resist the urge to buck authority, darling. Sometimes you just have to know when to take an expert's word over your own. Remember, nobody knows everything. Though I do have my days, don't I?

The Dragon (August 11 - September 10)
You will be overcome with the desire to consume far too much cheese in the days that come. Moderation in all things, muffin, but moderation in cheese most of all. Please, for my sake if not your own.

The Three Balls (September 11 - October 10)
Take a much-needed rest at the end of this week, button. You've been through a lot lately, and there's really no harm in taking a while to recuperate and regain some inner fortitude.

And remember, the quickest solve isn't always the cleanest one.

Well....that's stirred things up a bit. I think there's the potential for Kurt and perhaps Caine to lose their jobs over this one, via Garnet or Sente? It wouldn't take too much digging to uncover their involvement. I wonder what Garnet's opinion of Earlywine is now though?

You would have mentioned it to your dad first though...wouldn't you? They've always acted as though they thought him guilty and were expecting confirmation of this, rather than from a "there must be something deeper going on" viewpoint.

Or Kiteway and Scott could quickly be divested of authority with public trials for their crimes against humanity (and faith) and our link to PXC all but closed down (or censored) in the anti-Earth reforms.

Scarlett, Vi, and Kurt need to get somewhere safe. If there is anywhere.

shocked I tell you
didn't see the girls next step as going to the paper...

Wow. I'm stunned at this one. These girls didn't even give Sente a warning? Maybe they did though, and we just don't know about it yet. They could have at least let him know after they went to the paper but before it was published.

As for human experimentation on a secret military project, I need to think about this one. I suppose they were all volunteers. I know that people can volunteer as subjects for medical tests or to try out new drugs. I know that military people can volunteer for exceptionally dangerous missions - I think, for example, being on a submarine is an all-volunteer mission. I don't think using volunteers in a military test is a crime against humanity. I know that test pilots are volunteers. Probably the issue here is continuing the experiments after one person died? I don't even think it is wrong to keep some military advances secret from the public and your enemies (if you have any). I just need to think about this some more.

Like I said, I'm stunned.

I don't think the Kiteway household is going to recover from this any time soon.

Maybe we will get some answers to these questions.

I see the next headlines: [Fill in blank with name of enemy] breaks off diplomatic relations with PPC. And, [Reconstructionists, etc] furious at suggestions the Cube was manufactured as weapon.

It struck me that perhaps we and the girls are being played (again) by the 3P. Could this all be a set up by Earlywine to undermine Scott, Sente, and the Academy? This sort of information could hand him not only the City Council but the Academy (including the CRT and the earth-PPC link)

The 3P have been wise enough to control the situation far ahead of us before. It doesn't seem too outlandish to imagine them setting up this corrupt file for us to "find" through the conveniently-placed-end-of-tour-key access.

Somehow I doubt that Earlywine is behind this. While I'm defnately not a fan of the guy, I doubt that he had any idea of anything going on.

As for the 3P, I'm not sure what they could possibly gain out of this. Unless they want Sente out of power. Or a loss of contact to earth...

Rethinking that, they seem to have quite a bit to gain.

So which one of the kiteway women do we see being killed off first? well not first, obviously the reporter will be the first to meet 'an unfortunate end following a source' but besides her?

I don't see Sente being deposed anytime soon. Surely a quick phone call is all it would take. "Hello? PPXC Council? Yes my daughters are insinuating all sorts of things, But did i mention how I have a small army behind me and the power to teleport men matter and cubes all over the place? OH and the cube is a weapon of mass destruction. the acadamy made it. we can always make more.

Now get me some sharks with fricking laser beams attached to their heads and shut the hell up."

Earlywine could always be a pawn himself...V seems to chew people up and spit them out no problem.

I'm thinking along the lines of Kurt, Caine and the Kiteways all having to go underground somehow as the Anti-Earth forces gain power. They would have to setup some kind of alternate comm link, however.

I don't see Either SCarlett or Violet buying it just yet... I think we have more to learn about them and their father...

It certainly sounds plausible...

But let's wait and see what comes out of the election and its aftermath... I think we might be in for a surprise...
